Blueberry Academy: Unova's Undersea School, Its Terarium and League

1079 words | Reading time: 5 minutes

Blueberry Academy is the sister school of Paldea's academy. Introduced in The Indigo Disk, the second part of the Scarlet and Violet expansion, it reaches down under the sea in Unova's waters and trains its students in battle above all else.

A young school built around battling

Blueberry Academy stands on an artificial island in Unova, and its facilities extend beneath the sea. It is the sister school of the academy in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet: Naranja Academy in Scarlet, Uva Academy in Violet.

Where Paldea's academy rests on a long history, Blueberry Academy is a recent institution, and its curriculum clearly favors Pokémon battles, Double Battles most of all.

The Terarium, a park under the sea

Beneath the academy lies the Terarium, a huge undersea park divided into four areas. Students study Pokémon there in biomes designed to faithfully recreate their natural habitats.

These ecosystems are recreated with such care that some regional forms can thrive there just as they would in their home region, which makes the park a direct extension of the regional forms seen elsewhere in the series.

Cyrano, Briar, Carmine and Kieran

The academy was founded by Cyrano, who still runs it. After the player's exploits during the school trip to Kitakami, he travels to Paldea's academy in person to offer them a student exchange.

Among the teachers, Briar supervised that trip and has a passion for Terastallization. Among the students, Carmine keeps a close eye on her little brother, Kieran, a quiet, kind boy who became friends with the player in Kitakami.

The Blueberry League and its Elite Four

The academy has its own Pokémon League, run by its best students: four of them make up the Elite Four, and a League Champion reigns at the top.

The Elite Four brings together four very different personalities: Lacey, a second-year student who shows the player around on arrival, Crispin, as passionate about battling as he is about cooking, Amarys, who keeps her cool no matter what, and Drayton, a former League Champion more inclined to skip class than to attend it.

The one who dethroned Drayton is none other than Kieran, now Champion of the Blueberry League.

Life at the academy

Every student has their own room, where the player can rest and heal their Pokémon. The cafeteria serves only Cyrano's favorite dishes, and the school store accepts just one currency: Blueberry Points (BP), earned through the academy's activities.

The League Club, chaired by Kieran, exists to support the other clubs at the school by sending them BP. The academy's entrance, with its battle court and stands, hosts every match, official or friendly.

The academy is also where Snacksworth hands out the treats that lure Legendary Pokémon to Paldea, such as Suicune on an islet in Casseroya Lake.

The academy also makes an appearance in Pokémon Horizons: in episode HZ115, a student's Toxicroak watches from the stands as Lacey battles Ann.
