Amarys: the quiet Elite Four student who teaches the player to fly

1494 words | Reading time: 7 minutes

She's the student who said no to the player. Amarys sits on the Blueberry League Elite Four, the quartet reserved for the Academy's best battlers, where she represents the Steel type. Originally from Castelia City, and quiet enough to come across as aloof, she flatly objects to a Trainer from outside the school competing in their League. Yet once she's beaten, she's the one who gives the player the means to fly without limits.

A Student From Castelia City Set Apart by Her Silence

Amarys came to Blueberry Academy from Castelia City, and her taciturn nature immediately sets her apart from the other students. In a school whose life revolves around battles and public rankings, she speaks little, keeps to herself, and lets that distance serve as her introduction.

The results board, however, doesn't care about her reserve: she's one of the Academy's best students when it comes to Pokémon battles. That's what earns her a seat on the Blueberry League Elite Four, a group that by definition brings together the school's four most gifted students. Her type of choice is Steel.

The hard shell is only a façade, and the game makes sure you understand that. Amarys cares about her classmates far more than she will ever admit: she's close to Carmine, and everything suggests she has romantic feelings for Kieran, without saying a word about it to anyone.

The Cafeteria Objection, and Kieran's Ruling

The first encounter lasts just a few seconds. The player comes across Amarys at the Terarium's Central Plaza, deep in conversation with Carmine, and she leaves before the exchange can go any further. Nothing yet suggests she'll be one of the obstacles to overcome.

Shortly afterward, the entire Elite Four and Champion Kieran receive the same message: meet in the Academy cafeteria. The summons comes from Drayton, the group's Dragon-type Trainer, and his proposal fits in a single sentence: let the player compete in the Blueberry League.

Amarys strongly objects, on the grounds that the player isn't part of the Academy — an objection that, from the standpoint of the school's rules, is far from absurd. Kieran rules the other way, though, and even goes beyond the request by giving the player direct access to the final challenge. Amarys's refusal thus becomes the first step of the journey.

Canyon Biome: A Time Trial Before the Battle

The battle isn't available right away: Amarys first puts you through a trial at her post. Her post is in the Canyon Biome, and the challenge she sets there is a time trial flying on the back of your Mount Pokémon. The setting and the exercise go hand in hand.

There's just one catch: the player's Mount Pokémon can't fly. Amarys solves the problem herself by providing supplements that temporarily grant it that ability — to Koraidon in Scarlet or Miraidon in Violet. So the examiner personally hands over the very tool without which her exam would be impossible.

Once the clock is beaten, the battle follows, and Amarys loses it. Defeat loosens her tongue: she confides her worries about Kieran to the winner and asks them to help him, then watches the battle against Kieran and the player's victory.

After the Story: Unlimited Flight and a Skarmory

Once the story is over, you'll find Amarys in Classroom 3-2. She thanks the player for what they did, which, coming from a student who works hard to let nothing show, already amounts to a declaration.

The thanks come with a new batch of supplements for your Mount Pokémon. It gobbles them all up in one go and gains permanent flight: the convenience that changes how you get around in the endgame comes from the very character who refused to let the player take part in the first place.

Amarys then settles into the League Club Room, where she's available for a friendly battle. After a few interactions, she offers up a Skarmory with a Partner Ribbon, which she'll trade for any of the player's Pokémon, and she teaches you a pose the first time you beat her.

An Appearance in Horizons, an Entry in the Card Game

Outside the games, Amarys keeps a low profile. The anime only introduces her in the Horizons series, and not as a battler: she watches the battle between Drayton and Roy, seated alongside Kieran and Crispin.

The games give her more room in their imagery: Amarys appears on The Indigo Disk's key art. The Trading Card Game, for its part, only welcomes her with the Scarlet & Violet—Prismatic Evolutions expansion, released in France on January 17, 2025.

Finally, her name doesn't travel well from one language to another. German and Italian call her Erin, English Amarys and Spanish Nerina, while French keeps the Japanese name, Nerine, as it is. Her three Elite Four colleagues change just as much, if not more: Drayton is Irido in French and Levy in German, Crispin is Rubépin and Matt, and Lacey is Taro and Tara.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Where do you battle Amarys in The Indigo Disk?
At her post, in the Canyon Biome. The battle only comes after her challenge: a time trial flying on your Mount Pokémon.
  • Why does Amarys give supplements to the player's Mount Pokémon?
Because Koraidon in Scarlet and Miraidon in Violet can't fly, and her trial requires it. These supplements grant flight temporarily. Once the story is over, she gives you a new batch: your Mount Pokémon gobbles them all up in one go and gains permanent flight.
  • Which type does Amarys represent in the Elite Four?
The Steel type. She sits on the Blueberry League Elite Four, the group of the four most talented battlers at Blueberry Academy.
  • Was Amarys in favor of the player taking part in the Blueberry League?
No. When Drayton raises the idea in the Academy cafeteria, she strongly objects on the grounds that the player isn't a student at the school. It's Kieran who rules in the player's favor and gives them direct access to the final challenge.
  • Can you get one of Amarys's Pokémon?
Yes. In the League Club Room, after a few interactions, she offers to trade a Skarmory with a Partner Ribbon for any of the player's Pokémon. She also teaches you a pose after the first time you beat her.

In short

Amarys isn't the loudest voice on the Blueberry League Elite Four, and that's exactly what makes her easy to read: everything she doesn't say, she expresses through very concrete gestures — a supplement held out to a Mount Pokémon that can't fly, a Skarmory given up at the League Club Room, a worry about Kieran confided only after losing. The student who turned the player away ends up giving them the sky.
