Lacey: the Blueberry Academy student who sits on the Elite Four

1509 words | Reading time: 7 minutes

She welcomes the player, then stands in their way. Lacey is the first student to come greet the newcomer at Blueberry Academy and show them around campus. She's also one of the school's four best battlers, the ones the Blueberry League brings together in its Elite Four. Between the welcome and the exam, she'll have done everything she could to keep this newcomer from ever taking part.

A Second-Year Student on the Elite Four

Lacey is a young Trainer from Nimbasa City, enrolled as a second-year student at Blueberry Academy. Friendly by nature, she serves as the school's welcoming face, which means she looks after visitors the moment they set foot on campus.

The Blueberry League's Elite Four is no council of veterans: it's made up of the academy's four most skilled student battlers. Lacey holds a seat on it, and that's why she waits for challengers at her own trial.

She makes no secret of her tastes: she favors Fairy-type Pokémon. Eight species are on record for her — Alcremie, Whimsicott, Galarian Slowbro, Granbull, Excadrill, Minun, Primarina and Plusle — including an inseparable pair that the anime regularly brings back on screen.

In The Indigo Disk, the Guide Becomes an Obstacle

When the player arrives on campus, Lacey is the first to come meet them and ends up in charge of showing them around. Before they even make it through the doors, Cyrano floats the idea of a friendly match against the newcomer: she accepts.

The tour starts with the Terarium, the school's great pride, then continues to the Coastal Biome, where she takes the player to sit in on a class. Once the lesson is over, she lets them explore freely.

What comes next is less welcoming. Gathered in the cafeteria with the rest of the Elite Four and the Champion Kieran, she hears Drayton, the Dragon-type specialist, propose opening the Blueberry League to this visitor, and she strongly objects: the player isn't part of the academy, and she refuses to drag them into their problems. Kieran overrides her and allows the player to go straight to the final exam.

A Quiz Before the Battle, Then a Busy Postgame

Her post awaits in the Coastal Biome, and her challenge starts with a quiz about Pokémon before a single Poké Ball is thrown. The battle only comes after that: she loses it, then watches the player's battle against Kieran and the victory that follows.

Once the story is over, you'll find her in the League Club Room, ready to chat and up for as many friendly battles as you like. After a few conversations, she offers to trade a Snubbull carrying the Partner Ribbon for the Pokémon of your choice. Your first win against her also earns you a Rotom Phone case in the academy's colors.

Her postgame dialogue reads like an official school bulletin: the Elite Four has scrapped the overly strict rules inherited from Kieran and opened the Blueberry League to exchange students. On the other hand, the departure of Kieran and Carmine has frozen the rankings, which are suspended until further notice.

Finally, the character reaches beyond the main games: she joined the franchise's mobile game on March 31, 2025, where Lacey comes in two outfits, and a card bearing her name appeared in the Scarlet & Violet—Stellar Crown expansion, released in France on September 13, 2024.

In the Horizons Anime: Strategist, Guide and Referee

Lacey makes her entrance in episode 115 of Pokémon Horizons, and she wins her first battle there with a cool head: her Plusle and Minun take down Ann's Samurott and Sandslash, backed by Swift and Grass Knot.

The duo also makes the most of its Abilities, Lightning Rod on Plusle's side and Volt Absorb on Minun's. When Liko, Roy, Dot and Ult later arrive at the academy, it's Cyrano who puts Lacey in charge of the guided tour and of telling the story of the place.

Right after that, she referees the match between Roy and Nemona, which ends in Nemona's favor. The two media echo each other, because the games already make Nemona an acquaintance of Lacey's: the rival had made quite an impression at a fancy party by challenging Clay, Lacey's father, to a Pokémon battle.

The Lesson She Taught Ult

The following episode sees her steering the four visitors toward the Terarium in search of strong opponents. Ult, however, goes his own way: he's about to take on a dozing Overqwil, then a Galvantula, ignoring both of Lacey's warnings.

Along the way, she's outraged at how casually Drayton hands out missions to Roy. But it's Ult's determination that finally makes up her mind: she challenges him, and the battle plays out in episode 117, where her Excadrill crushes the boy's Sableye through Terastallization, backed by X-Scissor and Tera Blast.

Next come quizzes that Ult fails every single time, until Drayton's Dragonite comes into view. When he tells her where his own Dragonite came from, Lacey confides that her father pushed her toward this path too; the confession convinces the boy to grow closer to his Pokémon, which then defeats a rampaging Alolan Exeggutor.

Ult still refuses to admit that these lessons did him any good, much to the older girl's despair. He only brings himself to thank her when the Rising Volt Tacklers pack up and leave, after a final episode in which Lacey watches Roy's battle against Drayton and the evolution of his Crocalor into Skeledirge.

In short

Lacey holds an unusual position: a student among students, yet the judge standing at the gates of the Blueberry League. She welcomes, she explains, she quizzes, and only after the quiz does she send her Pokémon into battle. The anime gives her exactly the same role, that of the Trainer who passes on what was passed on to her, even if it means being thanked only grudgingly.
