Jacinthe: the queen of FRIM who locks up those who refuse

1734 words | Reading time: 8 minutes

She invites, and you don't say no. Jacinthe presides over the Society of Battle Connoisseurs, the high-society battle club of Lumiose City, and specializes in the Fairy type. Beneath the impeccable manners lies a simple method: when someone resists, she closes a barrier around them until they change their mind. The Z-A Royale finally gives her someone who interests her.

The SBC: Lumiose's Elite United by Battles

Jacinthe hails from Kalos and belongs to the wealthiest circle of Lumiose City. Her rank shows in two things: the one-of-a-kind pieces and formal attire she wears, and an address book that runs from the city's mayor all the way to the police.

She isn't just well-born. She's a top-level Trainer devoted to the Fairy type, with a Clefable as her partner. Talent and status opened the doors of the Society of Battle Connoisseurs, the SBC, which brings the city's elite together around a shared taste for Pokémon battles — she has become its president.

In that role, she has given herself a mission: to guide the masses and educate the people of Lumiose in Pokémon battles. That, in her view, is how you make the city more magnificent and keep humans and Pokémon together. A public-service message delivered from inside a private club.

The "Jacinthe Zone," a Courtesy That Won't Let You Leave

She is courteous, refined and entirely focused on herself: she happily styles herself the queen of the SBC, and it doesn't sound like a joke. The game never shows her losing her composure, but Lebanne hints that she is formidable in those moments.

Whims follow close behind. When she's refused something, she locks people in: the "Jacinthe zone" is a holo-tech barrier of the same kind as the ones that mark out the Wild Zones set up by Quasartico Inc. She closes it around whoever she's dealing with and waits for them to give in.

Lebanne is precisely the product of that method. Jacinthe battled and defeated her about two years before the story begins; the loser paid the price and entered her service within the SBC. Now her right-hand woman, she nonetheless wears a maid's outfit at all times, because of a promise made to her president.

Six Pokémon in Luxury Balls Around a Mega Clefable

Jacinthe keeps her whole roster in Luxury Balls and closes every one of her teams with her Clefable. Holding the Clefablite, it Mega Evolves, gains the Flying type on top of Fairy and is always the highest-leveled member of the team.

Around it, the line is clear: Carbink, Mawile, Gardevoir and Sylveon all carry the Fairy type. Aurorus is the only one outside the mold, as a Rock and Ice type, with Blizzard and Freeze-Dry, which no one else brings. In the promotion match, she only fields five — Sylveon only joins the rotation later — and beating her earns you the TM for Play Rough.

Clefable is a privilege she keeps to herself: as a member of the society states in front of Hotel Richissime, no one else in the organization is allowed to field one, a rule that one Trainer who also competes in the Z-A Royale blithely ignores. The game's expansion also reveals that Diantha was her battle mentor, and that she was the one Diantha entrusted Ansha to before leaving.

Le Super-Tournoi de Jacinthe, a Tournament You Can't Walk Out Of

It all starts with an invitation. The player has just reached Rank C when Lebanne approaches them and their partner to invite them to the gala held at Hotel Richissime. Waiting for them there are most of their former opponents, then Jacinthe herself, who announces Le Super-Tournoi de Jacinthe — a tournament reserved for the Trainers she deems worthy of interest.

The tournament doesn't get the chance to start: Vinnie reports that Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon have been detected and the duo leaves. Jacinthe then crashes Team MZ's strategy meeting at Hotel Z to press them to come back, and her interest in the player grows as they calm those Pokémon.

Once the last one is calmed, her patience snaps. A Jacinthe zone closes around Hotel Z: Team MZ can no longer get out and has to battle SBC members, Lebanne included, until they agree to compete. Back at Hotel Richissime, the duo discovers that the other guests weren't free to leave either.

A Final Hijacked by Zygarde

With all the invited Trainers present, the tournament can finally open. The player once again goes through Canari, Ivor and then Corbeau, before reaching the final, the one meant to pit them against the president.

It never happens: Zygarde and L burst in to put the player to the test. Lebanne was expecting an outburst; Jacinthe is instead delighted to see the return of Lysandre, that vanished public figure. She even says she understands how they feel, having "politely" insisted on filling her own tournament.

So she steps aside and lets the Legendary Pokémon battle the player in its 50% Forme. Once that interlude is over, she finally gets her promotion match, to her great delight. She loses the match, the player moves up to Rank B — and she congratulates them wholeheartedly on the promotion.

After the Royale: The Jacinthe Zone Turned into a Shield

When the maneuver meant to shut down Ange falls apart, Vinnie calls the high-ranking Trainers back in as reinforcements. Jacinthe, with a packed schedule, doesn't escort the player herself: she sends Lebanne to help calm the hordes of Mega-Evolved Pokémon on the attack.

Then she shows up in person, at the very moment her right-hand woman was complaining about her. And she does what she does best, but in reverse: a Jacinthe zone closed around herself, Lebanne and the hordes, long enough for the player to get through. With the machine destroyed, she comes to congratulate the player; the credits show her hard at work rebuilding Lumiose.

She later returns to Hotel Z with Ivor to propose extending the Z-A Royale, and is surprised to find that their two ideas are identical. The Infinite Z-A Royale is the result: she's the opponent in its eighteenth match, then a possible opponent from the twenty-first onward. A late-game mission replays the tournament with her as the only opponent, four times in a row — under the name Le Super-Tournoi de Jacinthe O — and the promised reward is the right to battle her endlessly.

In short

Jacinthe holds together two things that ought to cancel each other out: a public-service message and a method of confinement. She locks people in to be heard, then ends up locking herself in to let others through. The Fairy type suits her — flawless on the surface, very hard to say no to in practice.
