Lebanne: The SBC Maid Who Hides a Brawler

1569 words | Reading time: 7 minutes

You'd take her for a maid, but she's the house's second-in-command. Lebanne serves the Society of Battle Connoisseurs, the high-society battle club of Lumiose City, in a maid's uniform and almost apologizing for speaking. Behind this tightly controlled persona is a Dragon-type Trainer who loves nothing more than seeking out opponents stronger than herself — and a defeat she has never gotten over.

Two characters in one person

What the player sees first is a model employee: composed, polite, sparing with her words, careful never to step outside her role. Nothing in her manner hints at the character's real rank, and that's exactly the intended effect.

Her true character is the exact opposite. Lebanne is combative, tough, almost wild when she lets loose, and she sizes people up by what they're worth in battle. This side of her never fully disappears: it's simply put away whenever there's work to be done.

The mask drops under two conditions, and they're spelled out: she holds back while she's working, and whenever Jacinthe is in the room. Outside those two cases, she talks the way she really is. The gap between the outfit and the voice is what most strikes the few people who witness the switch.

A feared Dragon-type specialist

Lebanne comes from Kalos and built her career on competition. The character's driving force fits in one line: find an opponent above her level, then take them on. That appetite led her to the Dragon type, which she made her signature.

Her partner of choice is Dragalge. The game keeps her Pokémon in Great Balls, a modest but telling detail: no showy Luxury Ball and no collector's gear, just the equipment of a Trainer who fights.

Her reputation doesn't rest on her own claims but on an opponent's testimony. Ivor is among the Trainers she has beaten, and he says so himself: he puts himself through grueling training in the hope of winning that rematch one day. It's the best available measure of her true level, coming from someone who was on the receiving end.

The defeat that put her in an apron

Two years before the story begins, the seeker of strong opponents met her match. Jacinthe, who runs the SBC, crushed her, and that defeat didn't stay a mere sporting memory: it cost Lebanne her independence, since that's when she entered the Society's service.

Yet the post she landed is the second-highest in the organization. As the president's right-hand woman, she still wears the maid's uniform — not because of her duties, but because of a commitment she made to Jacinthe that she still honors. The costume is less a job than a constant reminder of the day she lost.

The relationship that results is anything but cordial. Lebanne considers her boss a show-off and has never felt at ease around her; that discomfort, as much as the rules, is what ended up burying her true personality under the manners of service.

Messenger, jailer, then opponent

Her first mission involving the player is a formal one. Once Rank C is reached, Jacinthe sends her to deliver an invitation to the SBC gala: she intercepts the player and their partner at Nouveau Café, advises them to accept, and hints that a more presentable outfit would be welcome. She then greets them at Hotel Richissime and leads them to the reception.

The gala is cut short. Jacinthe announces the grand tournament that bears her name at the very moment Urbain or Taunie, depending on your playthrough, gets a call from Vinnie reporting Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon. The duo takes off. Lebanne runs after them and begs them to turn back, warning them that the president will stop at nothing to get them back — her fear being that they'll end up exactly like her. Their refusal makes her furious.

What follows proves her right. Once the Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon have been calmed, Jacinthe locks Hotel Z inside one of her barriers and forces Team MZ to battle members of the Society to get out. Lebanne is one of those opponents. Once beaten, she drops the maid act and addresses the group in her real voice, to everyone's astonishment, then tells them what Jacinthe made of her before escorting everyone back to the tournament.

In the ruins, finally where she belongs

She then watches, from the sidelines, two matches that are out of her league. When Zygarde and L show up uninvited before the final to test the player, her first reflex is to fear her boss's anger; Jacinthe's delight at this dramatic twist reassures her. She watches the player defeat the Legendary Pokémon, then the president herself.

Her real role comes afterward, when the attempt to shut down the Ange fails. It's Lebanne, not Jacinthe, who escorts the player through the ruins and helps them calm the Mega-Evolved Pokémon attacking them in hordes. There she lets slip the line that sums up the character: the joy of battling alongside someone who, for once, doesn't show off — overheard by the person concerned, standing right behind her.

Jacinthe then closes a barrier around herself, Lebanne and the hordes to clear the way. Once the second weapon is destroyed, Lebanne is among the Trainers who come to congratulate the player, and the credits show her still at work on the remaining Mega-Evolved Pokémon. The mode that extends the Royale lines her up as the seventh opponent, then puts her back into the pool of possible opponents from the twenty-first match onward — in the end, the only setting where she gets what she has always wanted: endless battles, and no one to serve. Our deep dive into Pokémon Legends: Z-A puts this whole sequence in context.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who is Lebanne in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?
A Trainer from Kalos who specializes in the Dragon type and belongs to the Society of Battle Connoisseurs. Her maid's outfit is misleading: she is actually the right-hand woman of Jacinthe, the organization's president.
  • Why does Lebanne wear a maid's uniform?
Because of a promise she made to Jacinthe. Two years before the events of the game, Jacinthe beat her soundly; Lebanne paid the price by entering the SBC's service, and she keeps the outfit even now that she has become her right hand.
  • Which Pokémon does Lebanne use?
Her partner of choice is Dragalge, in keeping with her Dragon-type specialty. The game specifies that she keeps her Pokémon in Great Balls.
  • Is Lebanne really as reserved as she looks?
No. Calm and respectful on the surface, she is actually combative and fierce, always on the lookout for stronger opponents. She only holds back while on duty and in front of Jacinthe.
  • Can you battle Lebanne again after the story?
Yes. Once the Infinite Z-A Royale launches, she is the opponent in the seventh match, then reappears among the possible opponents from the twenty-first onward.

In short

Lebanne is a character defined by a punishment that never ends. A single defeat cost her her freedom as a Trainer, and the apron she wears every day reminds her of it better than any contract could. The game only gives her back her true character once you beat her in turn, and then in the ruins, when she battles alongside the player instead of serving them. That's where she goes back to being what she never stopped being: a brawler.
