Lysandre: From Philanthropist to the Most Radical Antagonist

1173 words | Reading time: 5 minutes

He started out helping people, and ended up wanting to wipe them out. Lysandre runs Lysandre Labs, invents the Holo Caster, grows rich, and gradually convinces himself that humanity only knows how to live by squandering what it has. His conclusion is the most brutal in the entire series. What makes him formidable is that he never contradicts himself — and that he weeps while explaining his plan.

The Starting Point: A Man Who Helped Others

Before Team Flare, there is a man full of hope who helps anyone in need. Nothing in this opening portrait hints at what comes next.

Three linked observations are enough to tip him over: the people he helped grew used to the assistance, for the human species living means squandering, and the scarcity of resources makes the conflict over who gets them inevitable.

To change mindsets, he bets on science and his genius as an inventor. With the Holo Caster leading the way, his creations bring him fortune and fame — plus a café bearing his name, painted red from floor to ceiling, with his labs set up beneath it.

His Vision of Beauty, Taken to the Extreme

What Team Flare wants is to bend the entire planet to its leader's idea of beauty, and the openly accepted price of forcing it into line is a massacre on the scale of the species. No other antagonist in the franchise is allowed by the game to state his agenda so plainly.

He argues skillfully, always turning his opponents' own inconsistencies back on them — the protagonists' quarrel over the Mega Ring gives him his best example.

And contempt for Pokémon plays no part in his case. It is through tears that he admits wanting to wipe them out, to spare them from one day being turned into weapons of war. Monstrous reasoning, genuine grief.

The Very Small Circle of People He Admires

Yet his disgust for humanity has three exceptions: Diantha, for a beauty he celebrates, Professor Sycamore, for research that feeds his own, and the latter's young protégés.

His bond with the researcher goes back a long way in the games. The two men share the same curiosity and draw opposite conclusions from it — that's the heart of the setup in X and Y.

His bloodline also traces back to the younger brother of AZ, the ruler who once reigned over Kalos. For him, reactivating the ultimate weapon three millennia later amounts to taking up a family affair.

Pyroar, Gyarados and the Two Legendaries

He has two favorite partners, Pyroar and Gyarados, the latter able to Mega Evolve thanks to the Key Stone set in his Mega Ring.

Around them orbit Mienfoo then Mienshao, and Murkrow then Honchkrow, in X and Y as well as at Team Rocket's Castle in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, while Pokémon Legends: Z-A gives him Florges, Sableye, Noivern and Garbodor. Teams that change from one game to the next, yet Pyroar and Gyarados are never missing from them.

The story also puts one of the region's two Legendaries in his hands — Xerneas the life-giver, Yveltal the life-taker. Which god you get depends on the version.

Left for Dead, He Returns Under an Initial

The disaster in Kalos is averted only narrowly, and everyone believes he is dead. Five years later, he resurfaces under a single initial, L — so the character lives on well beyond his defeat.

Team Rainbow Rocket also counts him among its lieutenants, alongside the series' other team bosses.

The anime changes two things: he meets Sycamore late rather than having known him for years, and a cybernetic suit with thrusters gives him the ability to fly. There, he serves as a mentor to Alain, whom Ash will face as a rival.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What exactly does Lysandre want?
To bend the whole world to his idea of beauty, accepting that this means a massacre on the scale of the species. His justification comes down to one conviction: resources are finite, so people will inevitably end up fighting over them.
  • Does Lysandre hate Pokémon?
No, and that's what makes the character so unsettling. Through tears, he admits he wants to wipe them out precisely to spare them from one day being turned into weapons of war.
  • What is the connection between Lysandre and AZ?
Lysandre descends from the younger brother of AZ, the ruler who reigned over Kalos and had the ultimate weapon built three thousand years ago. The project he takes up is therefore a family affair.
  • What happens to Lysandre after his defeat?
Presumed dead, he resurfaces five years later under a single initial, L. He also appears among the lieutenants of Team Rainbow Rocket.
  • Which Pokémon does Lysandre use?
Pyroar and Gyarados, the latter able to Mega Evolve thanks to the Key Stone set in his Mega Ring, surrounded by Sableye, Garbodor, Noivern, Honchkrow or Florges.

In short

Lysandre is the only antagonist in the series whose reasoning you can reconstruct step by step without ever finding a break. A disillusioned philanthropist, three linked observations, and a conclusion that leaves no one standing. He weeps while explaining it, he descends from the king who already destroyed everything once, and he comes back five years later under an initial.
