Corbeau: the Clan Dérouillard boss and his rigged contracts

Corbeau doesn't rob anyone: he gets them to sign. Boss of the Rust Syndicate, a Poison-type specialist and a native of Lumiose City, he holds his share of the city through credit rather than force. His method fits in a single contract clause his clients never read, and his run in the Z-A Royale makes him one of the most devious opponents in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

The Rust Syndicate, an Organization That Lends Money
The Rust Syndicate lives off credit, not racketeering. Corbeau has people sign loan contracts with wildly disproportionate interest rates, and he negotiates them himself: that's his real area of expertise, more than battling.
What follows is mechanical. The borrowers turn out to be unable to pay back and end up working for the syndicate: debt turns into labor, and the organization grows without ever needing to step outside the rules.
Hence a terrible reputation. Corbeau and his men are sometimes taken for criminals, even though the police have never come after them: the man stays on the edge of legality, never clearly beyond it. He's also determined, loyal, and has no patience for self-important people.
A Lone Child in Lumiose, a Mentor Named Lysandre
Corbeau grew up alone. Isolated very early on, with no one to hold on to, he was taken in by a man who looked after him and passed his ideals on to him: Lysandre. His drive to watch over Lumiose dates back to that time.
He was never the toughest, and he already knew it as a kid. He made up for it with brains, then got his mentor to advance him what he calls a "little nest egg" to start his own business: bodyguard work, deliveries, and already jobs that bordered on the illegal.
A line of dialogue from the Mega Dimension DLC adds another piece to the file. In it, Corbeau says that a gang boss from Kanto looked after him when he was a kid, while passing through Lumiose, and brought him a wealth of legends from Johto and Hoenn.
Philippe, Team MZ and a Contract in Fine Print
Corbeau's right-hand man is Philippe. He used to run a neighborhood gang and was also one of Lysandre's protégés; it was his future boss's success that eventually caught his attention. He never managed to make him back down, and swore loyalty to him, to the point of treating him like a little brother — while Corbeau, for his part, still thinks the top job should have gone to Philippe.
It all starts with a favor: Urbain/Taunie, of Team MZ, helps out a syndicate underling, and Philippe offers the organization's services in return. The request is for a loan of 100,000, meant to pay for a promotional video for Hotel Z; the contract gets signed without anyone noticing, in the fine print, an interest charge set at 1,000,000.
Repayment drags on. Once rank D is reached in the Z-A Royale, the syndicate summons Team MZ to its headquarters. Lida and the protagonist have to beat the guards and then Philippe before being let in, and are offered a deal with no way out: go to work for the syndicate, or watch Hotel Z get taken over by squatters. Next come three Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon to calm down, members of the Society of Battle Connoisseurs to rout because they were picking on children, and a riot that Corbeau breaks up himself when residents accuse Jett of making wild Pokémon multiply in the city — which she denies.
Six Poison Pokémon, Two of Which Aren't
Corbeau always opens the same way: with an Arbok. Toxic, Poison Jab and Leech Life make up the core of its moveset, backed up by Fire Fang to cover a blind spot.
The rest of the roster isn't single-type, though. A Gyarados of the Water/Flying type and a Rock/Water Barbaracle stand alongside a Roserade of the Grass/Poison type and a Garbodor. So two of his six team members don't share the type he specializes in, which fixes the classic flaw of single-type teams: a shared weakness.
The finale, though, never changes: Scolipede brings up the rear. It holds the Scolipite and Mega Evolves in every battle, with Gunk Shot, Earthquake, X-Scissor and Protect — and it's his lifelong partner, already by his side in his youth as a Venipede.
The stakes climb fast from one battle to the next. The first two encounters field four Pokémon between levels 50 and 56, while the later ones move up to six and climb as high as levels 92 to 97. The first win pays out 3,744, plus TM100 Gunk Shot — one of his Scolipede's moves. The whole team travels in Dusk Balls.

From the Qualifying Match to Le Super-Tournoi de Jacinthe
With the missions done, Corbeau summons the protagonist to his headquarters: Team MZ no longer owes a thing. He then demands a battle, learns at that very moment that a qualifying match is set to pit them against each other anyway, is delighted — and loses it.
His reaction says a lot about the character. He shows up at Hotel Z and takes a room to sleep there, to Team MZ's astonishment; in the morning, he compliments Urbain/Taunie on how the place is run and leaves a tip.
Le Super-Tournoi de Jacinthe brings him together with Philippe once again, this time at Hotel Richissime. Not very interested in the tournament at first, he changes his mind the moment the protagonist reappears, knocks out Urbain/Taunie right away, eliminates Gwynn in the next round, and goes out in the third.
In the meantime, he had thought the tournament was canceled: the protagonist and Urbain/Taunie had left earlier than planned. The Jacinthe zone that appeared in the hall kept him there. There he sees L arrive, accompanied by Zygarde, and recognizes him by his former identity, then salutes the protagonist's promotion to rank B.
The Human Ladder, and What Came After
Things get serious when the Angel resists the attempt to shut it down. Vinnie then calls on the high-ranking Trainers, Corbeau included, to back up Team MZ. He accompanies the protagonist all the way into the ruins and helps calm the Mega-Evolved Pokémon swarming toward them.
The scene that follows sums up the character better than his contracts do. Philippe and his men pitch in with him to build a human ladder, long enough to hoist the protagonist up to Zygarde, perched on the rooftops; as the final rung of the structure, he smiles, orders them to pull off the mission, then collapses from exhaustion — saved, in all likelihood, by his Rotom Phone: the device has a soft-landing mode.
With the machine destroyed, he joins the other Trainers in congratulating the protagonist, and the credits show him helping get Centrico Plaza back on its feet, his underlings at his side. The Infinite Z-A Royale makes him the fourteenth opponent, then adds him to the pool of names you can draw from the twenty-first match onward.
The trading card game has since caught up with him. His first card arrives with Mega Evolution—Ascended Heroes, an expansion released in France on January 30, 2026.

In short
Corbeau is that rare antagonist the story doesn't ask you to take down: you pay off a debt to him, you beat him in a tournament, then you literally climb onto his shoulders. The crafty lender and the man who serves as the ladder's final rung are one and the same, and that consistency is what makes him interesting. His way of looking after Lumiose simply runs through contracts nobody reads to the end.
