Coral: The Explorers Admin Who Never Waits for Orders

1973 words | Reading time: 9 minutes

Hamber didn't sell her a cause; he sold her total freedom. Coral is the second admin recruited by the butler of the Explorers, the organization that drives Pokémon Horizons. She's also one of its most unruly members: her go-to response to any setback is a move that blows everything up, her own chances of winning included.

Recruited with a promise of total freedom

The organization didn't find her by chance. Coral is the second admin to have joined the Explorers, trained by the butler Hamber right after Amethio. A very late episode in the series reveals his recruiting pitch: he promised her nothing except the freedom to do whatever she wanted, whenever she wanted.

Her very first appearances, however, keep her in the background. She sits in silence through Amethio's mission report to Gibeon, the leader of the Explorers, then leaves at the end of the meeting. The next one sets the character's real tone: she waits for the report from Spinel to blame him for letting Liko's pendant slip away, and points out in front of everyone that a mistake like that isn't like him.

Her portrait comes down to three traits that feed off one another. She's provocative, mocking and harsh with her colleagues, about their failures as much as about the partners she gets saddled with; she's seen as one of the most unruly admins whenever it comes to staying back and waiting; and she's lazy enough to have her Glalie carry her everywhere instead of walking.

The one order she never follows: wait

The Galar mission lays the pattern bare. Hamber flies Coral and Sidian by helicopter to an old castle and orders them to stay on board until his signal. The two admins lose patience and launch the attack on their own; she uses Glalie's Ice-type moves to cool down the defenders, eventually cornering Liko and Roy.

Captain Pikachu's arrival is enough to derail the whole operation. The Pokémon quickly takes Sidian's Garganacl out of action, Coral gets annoyed watching it act tough, and she orders Self-Destruct despite her teammate's pleas. The move misses its target, both their Pokémon faint, and she brushes off Sidian's comment to ask when their ride is coming.

The pattern repeats at the lighthouse in Levincia, during the attempt to capture the Black Rayquaza. Chalce gives an order, and Coral does the opposite: she sends her Glalie straight into the Legendary's mouth to set off Self-Destruct there. The hit lands, but the stricken Pokémon slams head-on into the Brave Olivine and badly damages the Rising Volt Tacklers' airship.

Two boxes of sweets, two meltdowns

The series gives her two episodes that have nothing to do with the Explorers' mission. In the first, she wears a disguise to wait in line outside a shop and buy an ultra-limited batch of Wiglett sweet buns; the last box sells out right before her turn. She then spots Liko and Roy, who have just been handed one without even waiting, and challenges them to a battle.

The second takes her to Cortondo for Katy's famous pastries, which are sold out too. Without time to battle both Liko and Coral, the Gym Leader settles things with a baking contest; Coral turns out to have zero talent in the kitchen, loses, and freezes part of the shop with her Glalie before being thrown out.

These scenes aren't just comic relief: they reveal what makes the character tick. Denied what she wanted, Coral instantly casts herself as the victim of an injustice and demands to be given it. Once the damage is done, her rage fades as fast as it flared up, and she picks up where she left off as if nothing had happened.

Cornbread, undercover student at Naranja Academy

To keep an eye on Liko, Coral and Sidian enroll in Naranja Academy's Terastal course. Showing up late for the speech by principal Clavell, they give fake names — she introduces herself as Cornbread, and he goes by Seasoning. Neither name is on the enrollment list; Chalce, working undercover at the school as a teacher, blames a database error and leads the pair away.

An aptitude match then sums up the entire character. Teamed with Gym Leader Kofu against Larry, she ends the battle with a single move: Self-Destruct knocks out every Pokémon on the field. Yet Dendra rules in Larry's favor, since the side that uses Self-Destruct is deemed the loser; Coral protests that a win is a win, is told that her personal rules count for nothing in the real world, and runs off the field.

The infiltration ends in a theft. During the Explorers' cyberattack on the school, she's tasked with keeping meddlers away from the art room and freezes an entire hallway to trap Roy, who lures her outside to spare the students' artwork. Fuecoco's Fire-type moves finish off Glalie; she tries to force her fainted Pokémon to keep fighting, Chalce calls her back, and Sidian carries her off — along with the Tera Orb stolen from the Academy.

Glalie and Scream Tail, two Pokémon made in her image

Glalie is both her ride and her weapon. It carries her everywhere, freezes hallways and shops, chains Ice Spinner into Crunch — and above all acts as a detonator whenever its Trainer loses her cool. Later in the series, it unlocks a Mega Evolution with the Refrigerate Ability, which adds Sheer Cold to its repertoire.

Her encounter with Scream Tail happens in the Great Crater of Paldea, during a surveillance mission that bores her. She wanders off to follow Roy, loses sight of him, and steps on the long tail of a pink Pokémon she first takes for an unremarkable Jigglypuff. The wild Pokémon turns out to be just as grumpy and loud as she is, and starts making fun of her.

A Great Tusk disturbed by the racket cuts the argument short. Coral attacks with Glalie, Scream Tail joins the offensive, and she triggers Self-Destruct while standing inside the blast zone herself. She laughs it off, admits the wild Pokémon was excellent, then throws a Poké Ball at it just to shut it up: to her surprise, the capture works.

Laqua, Gibeon's fall and the PR makeover

In Laqua, she sends Scream Tail into battle against Roy's Crocalor. The exchange opens with sound-based moves, Boomburst against Disarming Voice, then Play Rough against Flame Charge; the newcomer lacks experience and runs out of steam, and even Terastallization can't turn the tide. An earthquake eventually cuts the battle short.

What follows largely plays out without her. The admins guard the machines extracting Laquium while Gibeon faces Amethio and the Rising Volt Tacklers, then witness his defeat, his recognition of Amethio as his heir, and his disappearance. Spinel follows up by hurling Laquium Spheres at the Six Heroes to enrage them and claims Laqua in the name of the Explorers; stunned, Coral and Sidian are told by Chalce to keep quiet and watch.

Spinel then takes the organization public and credits it with driving back the Rising Volt Tacklers after the ecological incident. The public buys it, each admin is told to embody the ideal Trainer, and Coral finds herself at the head of a sizable fan base. At the unveiling of the Strong Sphere, she and Sidian take on Liko and Roy in an exhibition match, use the item despite their Pokémon's visible suffering, and keep hammering their downed opponents, until a boy named Ult stops the battle and Chalce hides the scene behind the metal shutter.

In short

Coral is the character the Explorers recruited by promising she'd never have to obey, and the series spends its whole run showing what that promise costs. Her worst setbacks all come from an ignored order rather than from a stronger opponent: the Galar castle and the Levincia lighthouse. The Explorers' final makeover into media heroes gives her exactly what she wanted — attention and an audience — at the very moment she's forbidden to do as she pleases.
