Clavell: The Director Who Poses as a Student to Help His Students

853 words | Reading time: 4 minutes

He puts on a blond wig and passes himself off as a student. Clavell runs Paldea's oldest academy, welcomes newcomers and assigns them to the extracurricular project that structures the whole game. He's also the one who, under an assumed identity, comes to lend the player a hand in the middle of one of the three storylines — a ruse few players see coming.

A School Head, and Not Just in Name

Clavell runs the academy in Mesagoza — Naranja or Uva, depending on your version of Scarlet and Violet. He welcomes new students, explains how the school works and handles its day-to-day running.

The game describes him as strict but kind, and above all: despite his place in the hierarchy, he puts himself on an equal footing with teachers and students alike.

He's also the one who assigns the player and their classmates to the extracurricular project called the Treasure Hunt, in other words the common thread of the entire adventure.

The Student Who Isn't One

At the heart of the Team Star storyline, Clavell comes to help the player — but not under his own name. He introduces himself as a student, complete with a blond wig.

The disguise fits his personality. He's constantly trying to understand and adopt his students' slang, with results that are sometimes downright cringeworthy under this assumed identity.

The ruse says something about the character: he's ready to take full responsibility for his school's mistakes, even if it means going into the field himself without the title that comes with it.

A Team That Doesn't Look Like a School Director's

His roster is surprisingly broad and tough for a school head: Polteageist, Houndoom, Abomasnow, Oranguru.

He adds Skeledirge, Gyarados, Meowscarada, Quaquaval and Amoonguss. No type specialty: this is a seasoned Trainer's team, not a specialist's.

He also maintains cordial relations with the region's two Professors, Sada and Turo, each in their own version.

🎓 The Paldea companions have their own section: see the Pokémon plushies.

In the Anime, the Master of Terastallization

The animated series gives him a broader teaching role. He welcomes into his office three young Trainers who have come to learn about Terastallization, and gives them the theoretical framework before the practice.

His first question isn't a technical one: he asks them why they want to master this power, and only moves on once he's satisfied with their answers.

The program he sets for them sums up the region: theory at the Academy, then a tour of Paldea's Gym Leaders to put it to the test.

In short

Clavell is the least authoritarian authority figure in the series. He comes down to his students' level to the point of borrowing their vocabulary, owns his school's mistakes, and even sets his title aside so he can help someone. The director who puts on a blond wig to lend a hand says more about Paldea than any back-to-school speech.
