Charm: The Eldest of the Miss Fortunes and Her Grudge Against the Galaxy Team

1586 words | Reading time: 7 minutes

She came from Kanto with a score to settle, and Hisui is the one footing the bill. Charm leads the Miss Fortunes, a trio of thieves the player runs into three times during the story of Pokémon Legends: Arceus, always making off with something that doesn't belong to them. Behind the theatrics and the vanity, the character has a very clear-cut view of what survival costs in a region that doesn't want her.

The Miss Fortunes: Three Thieves and an Eldest Sister

Charm is the oldest of the Miss Fortunes, a band of three thieves who roam Hisui to grab anything of value. Her two accomplices are Clover and Coin: their names form a matched set (in French, Constance, Garance and Hermance rhyme), and the trio uses that as a signature when introducing themselves to their victims.

She comes from Kanto, and she brought her grudge along for the trip. The Galaxy Team is her designated target, the one she wants revenge on; the player, who wears its colors, inherits that hostility from their very first exchange, before even crossing swords with her.

Her emblem is the pine. She claims it first because she is the tallest of the three, and second because the tree's evergreen foliage serves as her metaphor: a youth and beauty she proclaims everlasting, a line she repeats when introducing herself, in the Golden Lowlands as well as before the battle in the Primeval Grotto.

Three Encounters, Three Failed Thefts

The first encounter takes place in the Golden Lowlands, as the gang heads back to camp with the Wall Fragment taken from the Solaceon Ruins. Coin is the one who battles, loses and hands the item back; Charm doesn't fight yet and simply asks the player what they want with them.

Her reply sums up the whole character. She finds it admirable that someone would go to such lengths to help — the player can say they're doing it for Calaba or for Ursaluna — but she retorts that generosity is a luxury when you're already struggling to survive, and follows up with an old poem in which spring blossoms scatter.

The trio then comes back in force: they kidnap one of the two Hisuian Growlithe looked after by Palina, then haul it off to Firespit Island, fully expecting to see it evolve there. Charm's Gengar covers the getaway, not without her blaming the Diamond and Pearl Clans for their narrow-mindedness: without powerful Pokémon, she says, there can be no freedom for her sisters.

On the island, the wait drags on and the Growlithe refuses to evolve. The player arrives, beats Clover and then Coin, and the eldest finally steps in — just long enough for the second Hisuian Growlithe to swim to the island, stand up to the thieves and evolve before their eyes. The last showdown takes place in the Primeval Grotto, over the Origin Ore; beaten there once again, she leaves promising that next time won't go so well.

Rhydon and Gengar: A Duo That Never Changes

All of Charm's documented teams come down to two Pokémon, in the same order. A Rhydon, a Ground- and Rock-type Pokémon, opens the battle; a Gengar, a Ghost- and Poison-type Pokémon, closes it: never a third member, never a substitute.

Rhydon does the groundwork with Stealth Rock, Bulldoze and, depending on the battle, Rock Slide or High Horsepower. Gengar relies on Hypnosis, then Dark Pulse and Hex, rounded out by Venoshock or Shadow Ball — a setup that severely punishes any Trainer whose Pokémon gets put to sleep.

The levels tell the story of the progression. At the Molten Arena, the duo shows up at levels 34 and 35; in the Primeval Grotto, it climbs to 61 and 62, with High Horsepower and Shadow Ball replacing the early moves. The same pair, simply recalibrated for the end of the journey.

After Mount Coronet: An Encounter You Have to Earn

Once the main mission at the summit of Mount Coronet is complete, Charm becomes a random encounter scattered across the whole region. Six specific spots are on record: Deertrack Heights and Nature's Pantry (Obsidian Fieldlands), the Scarlet Bog (Crimson Mirelands), Castaway Shore (Cobalt Coastlands), Clamberclaw Cliffs (Coronet Highlands), and finally Icebound Falls (Alabaster Icelands).

How you approach her matters as much as the battle. The player can catch her off guard by approaching without being spotted, or get caught off guard by her; the battle happens either way, but the lines change, and she takes it badly when she's the one who got caught.

The reward depends on your progress. Before the end of the main story she leaves Stardust; afterward, she hands over Nuggets, in random amounts. Her team, meanwhile, is drawn from two setups with variable levels: the higher one can reach 64 and 65, enough to turn a field encounter into a real battle.

A Familiar Face, and a Wanted Poster

Charm bears a family resemblance to two Elite Four members: Agatha, on the Kanto side, and Bertha, on the Sinnoh side. The resemblance doesn't stop at the face, since she shares the former's Gengar and fields a Rhydon, the pre-evolution of the latter's Rhyperior.

No official link between the three has ever been confirmed. The game is content to let the echo linger, just as it had already done between Agatha and Bertha themselves: Shauntal wonders about the resemblance in one line of dialogue, without ever really getting an answer.

The Galaxy Team, for its part, hasn't forgotten the three sisters in crime. Wanted posters bearing their names hang at the organization's headquarters, in the Security Corps office — and the thieves' hairstyles differ slightly from one portrait to the next.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Which Pokémon does Charm use?
Always the same two: a Ground- and Rock-type Rhydon, then a Ghost- and Poison-type Gengar. Depending on the encounter, they appear at levels 34 and 35, 61 and 62, or at variable levels when you meet her out in the field.
  • Why does Charm hold a grudge against the Galaxy Team?

  • Where can you find Charm after the end of the story?
Once the Mount Coronet mission is over, she appears at random in six places: Deertrack Heights, Nature's Pantry, the Scarlet Bog, Castaway Shore, Clamberclaw Cliffs and Icebound Falls.
  • Is Charm related to Agatha or Bertha?
Nothing official. Their physical resemblance and choice of Pokémon link the three characters, but the games have never confirmed any family tie.

In short

Charm comes down to a simple contrast: a thief who talks about spring petals and eternal beauty while kidnapping a warden's Pokémon to force it to evolve. Hisui doesn't make her a front-line antagonist, but a stubborn opponent whose every defeat ends with the same promise of revenge — and whom the game eventually sets loose in the wild, somewhere between the Crimson Mirelands and the Alabaster Icelands.
