Coin in Pokémon Legends: Arceus (by Souichirou Gunjima for the TCG)

Coin: The Galaxy Team Defector Turned Thief in Hisui

1477 words | Reading time: 7 minutes

She left the Pearl Clan, she left the Galaxy Team, and she ended up on a wanted poster. Coin is the youngest of the Miss Fortunes, a trio of sisters who roam Hisui to get their hands on anything of value. The story of Pokémon Legends: Arceus puts her in the player's path three times, always on the wrong side — then turns her loose in the wild, where she becomes a recurring encounter.

A Trio of Sisters, and the Youngest of the Three

The Miss Fortunes aren't an organization with an org chart: they're three sisters who travel across Hisui stealing treasures. Coin is the youngest of the group, behind Charm, the eldest, and Clover, who introduces herself as the middle sister.

Each of them claims a plant as her emblem. Clover lays claim to bamboo, a plant of abundance that never withers and keeps on growing; Coin chose the plum tree, the delicate blossom that braves the harshness of winter to herald spring. Coming from her, it's less a bit of vanity than a warning to anyone who might underestimate her.

The portrait that sticks comes from her time in the Pearl Clan, and it has two sides: she grumbled constantly, yet never refused to help anyone in need. The gap between her tone and her actions is the whole character, her thieving career included.

Two Camps Left Behind, No Explanation Given

Her profile fits in three lines, and two of them are in the past tense: member of the Miss Fortunes, former Pearl Clan member, former Galaxy Team member. The game never gives the reason she left the Galaxy Team — it's a deliberate blank, not a mystery to solve in some hidden dialogue.

What she does say about it, on the other hand, is clear: she hates losing a battle, but she'd still rather lose than follow the Galaxy Team's orders. The break is about authority, not ideology. And the irony isn't lost on her: even after she's left, the organization keeps making her life difficult, to the point of making her give up the loot she has just snatched.

The Galaxy Team returns the favor. Wanted posters of the three sisters hang in the Security Corps office, at the very headquarters of the organization she left — a background detail that's enough to show they're no mere extras. The portraits also differ from one poster to the next, with each sister sporting her own hairstyle.

Three Appearances in the Hisui Storyline

The first encounter takes place in the Golden Lowlands, as the three sisters head back to camp with a Wall Fragment taken from the Solaceon Ruins. Coin takes on the battle herself, alone, and hands the item back once beaten — not without remarking that the Galaxy Team really does keep ruining her life.

The second appearance is the most revealing. The Miss Fortunes kidnap one of the Hisuian Growlithe belonging to Palina and take it to Firespit Island, a place so hot that no one ever sets foot there, hoping to trigger its evolution. Beaten in quick succession, they still don't give up: Clover revives both Pokémon with a round of medicine. It's the arrival of a second Growlithe, swimming over, and Palina's order to stop the battle that turn the scene around — the Pokémon evolves, and Coin realizes something isn't right.

The third appearance plays out in the Primeval Grotto, where the sisters come to seize the Origin Ore. Once Charm is defeated, Coin gives up the treasure on just one condition: that the sky return to its normal color. Running into Irida, leader of the Pearl Clan, there also prompts Coin to take a dig at the clan leader's stiffness, and to admit that it's exactly what she ran away from.

Toxicroak, a Signature Shared with a Commander

Only one Pokémon stays with her from start to finish: Toxicroak. It opens every one of her battles, and always the same way: she sends it out to drown the opponent in poison. Where other characters in the game rely on a full team, she builds her reputation on a single species.

That Toxicroak fuels the only real open question about the character. Coin bears a physical resemblance to Saturn, a Team Galactic Commander who also trains a Toxicroak — but no link between them has ever been confirmed. The connection remains a documented coincidence, not something to turn into a family tree.

Running into Her After the Story Ends

Once the mission "Atop Mount Coronet" is complete, Coin's status changes: she becomes a random encounter who can show up in every area of Hisui, at specific spots. She's no longer a story milestone but an event out in the field.

Two approaches lead to the same battle. The player can catch her off guard by approaching before she spots them, or be caught off guard by her — either way the fight starts, and the game picks her team at random from two possible lineups. Once defeated, she leaves behind Stardust, or Nuggets once the main story is behind the player.

Her haunts cover one area each: Deertrack Heights in the Obsidian Fieldlands, the Golden Lowlands in the Crimson Mirelands, the Spring Path in the Cobalt Coastlands, the Celestica Trail in the Coronet Highlands and the Avalanche Slopes in the Alabaster Icelands. The return to the Golden Lowlands is no developer's accident: that's where it all began.

In short

Coin holds an uncomfortable yet consistent place in Hisui's cast: she turned her back on two institutions, and outright banditry was the only path left to her. The game doesn't explain it and doesn't try to redeem her — it simply shows a grumbling thief who gives back what she took when the situation calls for it, and who demands that the sky be fixed before she moves on. A passing opponent the game had the good sense never to put away for good.
