Mai: The Warden Who Asked for Help with Her Wyrdeer
Share
1515 words | Reading time: 7 minutes
Mai holds her post by the will of the people, and her first instinct is to go looking for backup elsewhere. A young Warden of the Diamond Clan, she watches over one of Hisui's Ride Pokémon and finds an intruder settled right in the middle of its territory. Rather than going it alone, she turns to the Galaxy Team — then puts the Trainer they send her through a test. Her whole role in the story rests on this balance between authority she fully owns and a clear-eyed view of her own limits.

A Post Granted by the People, a Ride Pokémon to Feed
In Hisui, you don't declare yourself a Warden: the role is granted by the people, and Mai's ties her to the Diamond Clan. The job means answering for a Ride Pokémon, one of those creatures the region treats as powers in their own right.
The one entrusted to her is Wyrdeer, which lives in the Obsidian Fieldlands. Her mission covers three things at once: watching over the creature, holding its territory and making sure it has enough to eat — so keeping it supplied matters as much as guarding it up close.
It's this very down-to-earth side that sets Wardens apart from the other authority figures in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Mai is young for such a post, and the game never presents her as a priestess: she manages a territory, food supplies and a neighborhood.
Munchlax, a Partner That Has Never Known a Poké Ball
Besides being a Warden, Mai is also a Trainer, and her relationship with her Pokémon is out of the ordinary. She grew up with Munchlax since childhood and speaks of him as a little brother rather than a catch or a battle companion.
The result shows on screen: she gives him orders and sends him into battle without ever having needed to shut him inside a Poké Ball. In a game built around catching, a Trainer whose partner has never been caught stands out as a deliberate exception.
The duo eventually spilled over beyond the main game. Mai joined the franchise's mobile game on October 2, 2025, in her original outfit and paired with Munchlax; her profile there sums up her duty — watching over a very special Wyrdeer — and describes her as a big sister to Adaman and Irida, who rely on her a great deal.
🌾 Munchlax, Wyrdeer, Kleavor: the inhabitants of Hisui have their own shelf among our Pokémon figures.

An Alpha Kricketune, a Test on Aspiration Hill, a Melody
Mai's storyline starts with a problem of who occupies the land: an alpha Kricketune has settled on Wyrdeer's grounds, and she asks the Galaxy Team to drive it out. The request amounts to an admission: the Warden knows she doesn't have the means to deal with it alone.
She meets the Trainer sent to Aspiration Hill and demands a battle before anything else, to see what he's made of. With the test passed, she leads him to Deertrack Heights, where the intruder has set up camp, and uses the trip to tell him about the Almighty Sinnoh, the deity credited with creating Hisui.
Once the intruder is dealt with, the focus shifts to the Ride Pokémon. Wyrdeer steps toward the Trainer, and Mai reads the gesture as a sign of fondness that could go as far as letting him ride it — a rare honor, she says. Right after, she teaches him the tune used to call the Pokémon.
Sounding the Alarm, Then a Closed Door at the Worn Bridge
She turns up again at the Galaxy Hall, where she comes to report that Kleavor, the Lord of the Woods, has gone out of control, and points the Trainer toward Lian, the Warden responsible for it. The building's architecture impresses her along the way: she notes that the Galaxy Team doesn't do anything by halves.
The tone changes when the space-time rift worsens and the sky changes color. Mai joins the Trainer at the Worn Bridge, aware that he has been banished from Jubilife Village, and tells him the Diamond Clan can't take him in without risking reprisals from the Galaxy Team.
Still, she won't let him walk away with nothing but a no. She urges him not to give up and says she's convinced he'll find a way to set things right, given everything he has already accomplished. After the victory over Dialga and Palkia, she shows up at the festival held to celebrate it, together with Arezu and Calaba.
A Horde of Zorua Where There Shouldn't Have Been Any
Mai's last appearance opens a mystery instead of closing one. She waits for the Trainer at the camp on Deertrack Heights to tell him that Munchlax has been acting strangely for a while, without knowing why.
It's the Trainer's Arc Phone that provides the answer: it reacts and points to Ramanas Island as the spot drawing the Pokémon. Once there, it's Hisuian Zorua that are waiting, in numbers, even though the species has no business being in the Obsidian Fieldlands.
Mai draws the conclusion that befits a Warden: an anomaly of this scale has to go up to the Survey Corps, and she offers to alert Cyllene. The scene closes her story on the same reflex that opened it: handing things off to someone who'll know what to do.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Which Pokémon is Mai the Warden of?
Wyrdeer, which lives in the Obsidian Fieldlands. Her duty isn't limited to protecting the Pokémon: it also covers its territory and its food supply. -
Why isn't Munchlax in a Poké Ball?
Because Mai was raised with him from childhood and considers him her little brother. She commands him and sends him into battle without ever having needed to shut him inside one. -
What happens once the alpha Kricketune is out of the way?
Mai congratulates the Trainer, then Wyrdeer steps toward him. She sees it as a sign of affection that could go as far as letting him ride on its back, a rare honor, and teaches him the melody used to call Wyrdeer. -
Why does the Diamond Clan refuse to take in the banished hero?
For fear of reprisals from the Galaxy Team. Mai tells him so to his face at the Worn Bridge, while encouraging him not to lose hope, convinced he'll eventually find a way out. -
Is Mai related to Marley?
Nothing official. The two characters look alike, and in French both carry grain names — riz (rice) for Ryza and avoine (oats) for Viviane, Marley's French name — while the game's fifth mission, "A Request from Mai," may echo the card "Marley's Request." No family tie has ever been confirmed, though.
In short
Mai holds a discreet but consistent place in the Hisui story: she's the Warden who knows exactly where her competence ends. She calls in the Galaxy Team against an alpha, sends the Trainer to Kleavor's Warden, offers to hand the Zorua matter over to the Survey Corps — and never loses her authority in the process, since she's the one who tests, explains and passes on the melody. The nod even reaches her name: in French, Ryza is modeled on rice just as Marley's French name, Viviane, is modeled on oats, though no family tie has ever been made official.
