Sabrina: the Psychic Gym Leader who turned rivals into dolls

841 words | Reading time: 4 minutes

In her day, the Psychic type had almost no counters. Sabrina runs the Gym in Saffron City and awards the Marsh Badge. She has psychic powers of her own, which have kept her apart from others since childhood. The anime made her one of its most unsettling characters — and for good reason: she collects her defeated opponents as dolls.

The most unbalanced type of the first generation

Sabrina awards the Marsh Badge, the sixth of the eight badges in Kanto. Her specialty, the Psychic type, was back then far more powerful than anything else.

Her team proves it: Abra, Kadabra and Alakazam form the core, rounded out by Slowbro, Hypno and Mr. Mime.

Later generations bring her reinforcements: Espeon, Gallade, Sigilyph, Metagross. Her specialty has never changed from one game to the next.

Powers that cut her off from others

The character's defining trait isn't power but isolation. Sabrina has had psychic powers since early childhood, and has never really grown close to anyone.

She focused on developing them rather than on her relationships with the outside world. Her solitude isn't something she endures; it's the result of an early choice.

Nor is she a recluse. She is a Gym Leader who competes in an expert tournament and a movie actress, playing a Magic Queen — a role perfectly in keeping with what people say about her.

The dolls, or the most chilling way to make friends

The anime gives the character a twist that left its mark on a whole generation of viewers: when she beats an opponent, she turns them into a doll.

The explanation given is worse than the act itself. It's her way of making them her friend — the solitude hinted at in the games takes a truly disturbing turn here.

Ash battles her twice for the badge, and Sabrina uses only one Pokémon across both matches: an Abra that evolves into Kadabra. After the first defeat, the group ends up shrunk down among Sabrina's toys, and it's the Gym Leader's father, whom they met at the Gym entrance, who gets them out of trouble.

In the manga, a Team Rocket lieutenant

The manga adaptation turns her to the dark side: there, Sabrina is one of Team Rocket's lieutenants, which gives her Gym a whole new meaning.

She readily operates from a distance. Her first public appearance comes in the form of a psychic projection, while she is actually in Saffron City.

She turns up again during the battle at Silph Co., then face to face with the hero. She disappears, in fact, along with Team Rocket's two other lieutenants, Koga and Lt. Surge, when the building is destroyed.

In short

Sabrina is the Kanto Gym Leader the franchise has made the darkest. The games make her a loner who chose her powers over other people; the anime shows her collecting her opponents as dolls; the manga makes her a Team Rocket lieutenant. All three versions tell the same story: someone who never learned any other way to make friends.
