Rika: the Elite Four examiner who only acts strict

1751 words | Reading time: 8 minutes

Before the first battle of the Paldea League, there's an interview. Rika conducts it from behind a desk, stone-faced, and fails candidates without a second thought. The rest of the time, she's the most laid-back voice on the Elite Four — the one who walks up to you in the middle of Victory Road to tell you that you look cut out for battle. The Ground type is her turf, and Clodsire is her favorite Pokémon.

The Elite Four, the Ground type and six Pokémon

Rika holds one of the four seats on Paldea's Elite Four, the League tier that stands between the eight Gym Badges and the title of Champion. Her superior is Geeta, Top Champion of the region, and the two women share the same instinct: spotting promising Trainers before anyone else does.

Her specialty is the Ground type and her favorite Pokémon is Clodsire. Five others are on record across her appearances: Whiscash, Camerupt, Donphan, Torterra and Dugtrio.

Off duty, the character is written in a very casual register, laid-back and friendly. She comments on the player's journey like a fellow traveler rather than a superior — and that natural manner is exactly what part of her job forbids.

The examiner who doesn't like her costume

Her Elite Four seat comes with a chore: Rika administers the first stage of the Champion Assessment. Before any battle, she's the one who decides who gets to attempt the rest.

The role demands a composed, strictly professional demeanor. That's the exact opposite of her temperament, and the game makes no secret that she feels uncomfortable in it.

Hence a lasting misunderstanding: several students at Paldea's academy find her scary, when the strictness is just an exam costume. The day she can finally announce a pass, her first relief is getting out of that role.

The League interview: ten questions, no special treatment

She waits for candidates behind a desk at the League. Without all eight Gym Badges, the interview is lost before it starts: she doesn't conduct it seriously, and the outcome is failure, whatever answers are given.

With a complete file, on the other hand, the exam becomes real. Around ten questions cover knowledge, but also the reasons and goals of whoever is aiming for the title of Champion. A single wrong or half-hearted answer is enough to get them turned away.

Once the interview is passed, she announces that this first half is a success and sends the candidate off to get ready for the room at the back. The second half is a battle — and the first opponent is her again.

First on the battlefield, then in charge of calling the next one

On the battlefield, Rika opens hostilities without any pretense: she says she likes her opponent and announces that she won't pull her punches. Once beaten, she applauds, admits she never stood a chance and says again that she enjoyed the battle. Along the way, she points out that few Trainers make it through this practical test.

She then switches to dispatcher mode. Poppy comes in next, tasked with avenging the Elite Four, followed by Larry; since he can't make himself heard, it's Rika who calls Hassel in his place.

With all four down, she warns that one more examiner remains of a whole different caliber, heals the player's team and wishes them luck. After Geeta falls, she congratulates the winner, then, in Mesagoza, watches the new Champion's battle against Nemona.

Two encounters before the exam, two more after

The first takes place along Victory Road, at the fourth Gym. Rika has heard about the player, approaches them promising they'll make a formidable opponent, then warns them that things will get tougher after this badge. Hassel, who is with her, makes the introductions and reveals that they both sit on the Elite Four.

She shows up again at the seventh Badge, this time with Poppy, and notes that the player is clearing Gyms without slowing down. Finding out which of the two Trainers is stronger clearly amuses her, and Poppy's answer gives her the chance to confirm she isn't bluffing about being on the Elite Four.

The DLC brings her back, this time at Blueberry Academy, alongside Geeta, for Briar's announcement of a new expedition into Area Zero. Her first reaction is to chew the player out: they went there without permission, and Geeta has to calm her down before she wishes them a safe trip.

Once the story is over, she can be invited to Blueberry Academy as a special coach — available after five interactions, and can be challenged to a friendly battle. She then offers to trade a Paldean Wooper with a Partner Ribbon for any Pokémon, and gives an Ability Patch after your first win.

In Horizons, the opponent who asks a question

Pokémon Horizons first shows her in the academy's hallways, where she introduces herself to Liko, Roy and Dot — it's Dot who identifies her as a member of the Elite Four. Liko's uniform tells her that she comes from Indigo Academy, known for preparing its students for the League. She then urges Geeta to link Naranja Academy with other schools, so as to find more Trainers of that caliber.

Further on in the series, she runs the aptitude battles at Naranja Academy. Sidian and Tulip kick things off, the former's Garganacl goes down very quickly, and Rika criticizes him for accepting defeat too easily — he replies that he'd rather do that than sacrifice those backing him up to ensure his own survival.

The next episode pits her against Liko and Katy, whom she takes the time to put at ease before asking them a question: why does she battle? Her Clodsire poisons Katy's Lokix, her Dugtrio ends up paralyzed, and Clodsire's Terastallization sweeps away Liko's Floragato. The answer lay in the battle itself: she throws herself into it completely.

After that, she is mostly an attentive spectator. Later in Horizons, she notes Liko's progress, then comes to congratulate her despite her defeat against Roy; in a later episode of the same arc, she welcomes the Rising Volt Tacklers to the League by playing ultra-serious for a single line, before the Elite Four explain what Area Zero is home to: little-known Pokémon with peculiar biology, called Paradox Pokémon.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Rika's specialty?
The Ground type. Her favorite Pokémon is Clodsire, and six Pokémon are on record for her in Scarlet and Violet: Whiscash, Camerupt, Donphan, Clodsire, Torterra and Dugtrio.
  • Why do students at Paldea's academy find Rika scary?
Because her role as examiner forces her into a composed, professional attitude, the opposite of her casual, laid-back personality. This situational strictness has earned her a reputation she never sought, and she is relieved to step out of it.
  • Can you fail Rika's oral test?
Yes, in two ways. Without all eight Gym Badges, failure is automatic whatever your answers. With all the qualifications, around ten questions are asked, and a single wrong or unsatisfactory answer is enough to get the candidate turned away.
  • In what order do you face Paldea's Elite Four?
Rika opens the battles, followed by Poppy, Larry and Hassel. Once all four are beaten, there's still Geeta, the Top Champion, to face before the Champion battle.
  • Does Rika appear in the anime?
Yes, in the Pokémon Horizons series. She battles Liko and Katy at Naranja Academy and wins by Terastallizing her Clodsire, before showing kindness to an opponent in tears.

In short

Rika is the first lock on the Paldea League, and the only one you get past with words before Pokémon. That's the paradox of the character: the most laid-back Trainer on the Elite Four is the one entrusted with playing the strict one, and she plays it well enough to scare students. On the battlefield, the mask comes off — she applauds her own defeat and heals the team of the person who just beat her.
