Drayden: the Dragon Gym Leader you only battle in Black

1482 words | Reading time: 7 minutes

Only one of the two games puts him in your way. Drayden guards the Opelucid City Gym, the last in the Unova League, and of the Black and White pair, he only appears in Pokémon Black: in White, Iris holds the post instead. As much the mayor of his city as its Gym Leader, he champions the Dragon type, and the sequels, Black 2 and White 2, leave him alone at the Gym while Iris moves up a floor.

Opelucid City, the Legend Badge and a Gym Shared Between Two Games

In Pokémon Black, the Opelucid City Gym is the eighth and final one on the journey, and Drayden guards it — in the very city where he is also mayor. Whoever beats him leaves with the Legend Badge, the one that completes the set of eight official badges and opens the door to the Unova League's Elite Four.

Pokémon White puts Iris at the same address, at the same rank, with the same badge to defend. The two characters fill one single slot on the journey, each in their own game: facing one means never meeting the other in a Gym battle.

Two games later, in Black 2 and White 2, the hierarchy has shifted. Iris has been promoted to League Champion and Drayden runs the Opelucid City Gym alone, now the seventh stop on the journey, the next-to-last.

An All-Dragon Stable

The species attached to his name all fall within his specialty: Altaria, Axew, Druddigon, Salamence, Fraxure, Flygon, Haxorus and Hydreigon. No concession to any other type, which makes sense for a region's final Gym. And he's not the only eighth Gym Leader to play that card: Clair in Blackthorn City, Raihan in Hammerlocke and Iris hold the same role in their respective Leagues.

Compared with Iris's team, his stands apart through tiny differences. His Pokémon are male, hers are female, and their Druddigon don't have the same Ability: Rough Skin on one side, Sheer Force on the other. His even changes from one game to the next, since the one in Black 2 and White 2 has Sheer Force where the one in Pokémon Black had Rough Skin. Another stat-sheet curiosity: his Haxorus battles at level 43 in Black and White, even though Fraxure only reaches that stage at level 48.

Outside the story, the Pokémon World Tournament brings him back in several competitions, including the Unova Leaders Tournament and the Type Expert Tournament for Dragon types, with the same lineup rules in both: three Pokémon in Single Battles, four in Double and Rotation Battles, all six in Triple Battles. So opponents there never face exactly the same Drayden twice.

Altaria, Axew, Druddigon: every species attached to his name shares the same type.

The Dragon Master of the Village of Dragons

The anime doesn't place him in a Gym but in a village. A flashback in the Black & White series shows him at the contest the Village of Dragons holds every year, congratulating a still-young Iris on an effortless win against a Druddigon.

Flushed with the compliment, the girl challenges the man the village calls the Dragon Master. He accepts, and the matter is settled in a single exchange: his Haxorus sweeps the kid's Excadrill aside before she even has time to understand. Encyclopedia profiles even list Iris among the people close to him.

The duel gets a rematch years later, when Iris returns to the village. Drayden arranges to meet her at the school she once attended, and he wins again. On screen, however, he never defends the eighth badge: unlike in the games, nobody comes to him for it.

Opelucid City Under the Ice

A short series shows him in a different light, in front of N's Castle, having come to block the Seven Sages' path. He isn't alone: several Unova Gym Leaders fight the enemy grunts at his side to stop the operation.

The rest plays out on his home turf. Drayden tries to shield Opelucid City from Team Plasma and sends his Haxorus against Zinzolin and several grunts. The fight is cut short: the cold of Kyurem, which Colress has just unleashed, encases the entire city in ice.

Weakened, the Gym Leader can't stop what comes next. Zinzolin wrests the DNA Splicers from him, and that failure closes his part in the story — one of the rare times a Gym Leader loses through no fault of his own.

The Look, the Family Line and the Cards

You can recognize the character from a distance. White hair and a beard trimmed into a dragon's jaw, one that hides his mouth entirely, a visibly well-built frame, and a wardrobe where purple turns up everywhere: gloves, suspenders and shoes, worn with a green tie over a white shirt and gray jeans.

The most recent games give him a descendant. The Indigo Disk, an expansion to Scarlet and Violet, introduces Drayton as his grandson: a student at Blueberry Academy who sits on the Elite Four and, before that, held the title of Champion in the Blueberry League.

Elsewhere, he stays true to his label: the manga bring him back as the Opelucid City Gym Leader, exactly as the game and the anime do. Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket welcomed him later, with the Ruler of the Skies expansion, released in France on July 30, 2026.

In short

Drayden is a Gym Leader whose position keeps shifting: eighth in one game, seventh in the next, absent from a third, and never challenged for his badge on screen. What never changes is the Dragon type, the city he's mayor of, and a Haxorus that settles his battles in a single exchange. Even on the night Opelucid City froze over, he was out in front.
