Tyme: The Math Teacher Who Left Her Gym to Her Little Sister
Share
1202 words | Reading time: 6 minutes
She left a Gym for a blackboard. Tyme teaches mathematics at Paldea's oldest school, and it isn't her first career: before joining the faculty, she ran the Montenevera Gym. She left it to her younger sister to devote herself to a subject students dread, and one she has set out to make them love by way of the only thing they truly care about.

The math teacher at Paldea's oldest school
Her workplace changes its name depending on the version: Naranja Academy in Scarlet, Uva Academy in Violet. The building stands in Mesagoza and claims the title of the region's oldest school, which also makes it the main setting of the adventure.
Tyme holds the mathematics post there, within a faculty where every subject has its own teacher. The game first stresses her temperament: an uncommon gentleness that runs against the image you might have of a former Gym Leader.
Like the other Academy teachers, she gives a series of classes the player can attend. Her subject is the one most directly tied to the numbers that make the game run, which earns her a special place in the timetable.
Making math fun through battling
Her teaching philosophy comes down to one idea: math should be fun. Rather than starting from abstraction, she ties each concept to a situation her students know by heart: a battle between Trainers.
Three examples structure her lessons: type matchups, the odds of landing a critical hit and a move's accuracy. These are exactly the three places where the game engine runs a calculation behind the player's back, and looking at them head-on means understanding what you're doing when you pick an attack.
A side plot unfolds during these classes. Every now and then, Tyme senses that a student is watching her and, rather than letting it slide, she eventually sets a trap to catch them in the act — a very concrete way of solving a problem.

Montenevera: the Gym handed down to her little sister
Before the Academy, Tyme held the title of Gym Leader in Montenevera. She ended that career a year and a half before the adventure begins, which is a very short time on the story's scale.
The post didn't stay vacant: it went to Ryme, her little sister. So the player who shows up in Montenevera battles the younger sister, not the older one: Tyme herself can only be battled elsewhere — in the Academy Ace Tournament, then in the League Club Room at Blueberry Academy.
Her battle specialty hasn't changed, though, as she's still devoted to the Rock type. The reward she has in store for the player follows the same logic: fifty Rock Tera Shards, handed over once you've attended her classes and solved the mystery of the student who was spying on her.

The rules, a concert and a first card
Her gentleness has its limits, and the Starfall Street storyline brings them to light. She catches Clavell in the middle of a battle with the player, right in front of the Academy — a battle that breaks the school's rules.
Disappointment wins out over surprise: she scolds Clavell without mincing words, then threatens to take the matter all the way up to Chairwoman Geeta. The scene sums up the character: the rules apply to those who enforce them, too.
Outside the games, her screen time comes down to a single shot. She attends Ohara's concert in the very first episode of a short animated series about Paldea, seated in the audience alongside Hassel, Saguaro and Salvatore.
The card game added her later. Her first card came out in the Scarlet & Violet—Surging Sparks expansion, released in France on November 8, 2024. Her name, meanwhile, changes at every border: Tyme in English, Quendella in German, Mila in Spanish, Thyma in Italian — while the French Thaïm keeps the rhyme that links her to Laïm.

In short
Tyme holds a unique position among the Academy staff: she ran a Gym before stepping into the classroom, and her course builds on that experience instead of shelving it. Type matchups, critical hits and move accuracy are a Gym Leader's tools as much as a math teacher's, and the sternness she reserves for an adult caught breaking the rules is a reminder that great gentleness isn't the same as leniency. She handed her Gym over to her sister, but not her head for numbers.
