Koga: The Fuchsia City Ninja Who Made the Elite Four

794 words | Reading time: 3 minutes

He's a ninja, and the game says so with a straight face. Koga runs the Gym in Fuchsia City, champions the Poison type and, according to a local, belongs to a great family of fearsome ninjas. He is also the only Kanto Gym Leader the series has ever promoted: a generation later, he sits on the Elite Four and leaves his Gym to his daughter.

Fuchsia City, the Soul Badge and a dojo

Koga awards the Soul Badge, the fifth of the eight official badges in Kanto. The route is flexible enough that you can face him after or before Sabrina, depending on the order you choose.

His Gym isn't an ordinary battle hall: it's a ninja training dojo, with all the hidden doors and trick floors that implies.

His roster is Poison with no compromise: Weezing, Muk, Venomoth, Golbat, Venonat.

The only Kanto Gym Leader ever promoted

A generation later, Koga has changed jobs. He becomes the second member of the Elite Four, while staying loyal to the Poison type.

His daughter Janine takes over the Fuchsia City Gym. She is a ninja like him and champions the same type: the handover is complete, from the trade to the battle style.

That career path remains unique. No other Kanto Gym Leader has been promoted to the Elite Four, and Koga is also the only one missing from a major later tournament that brings the Gym Leaders together.

In the anime, a ninja through and through

The series never treats him like an ordinary Trainer. He uses ninja techniques in every one of his appearances — even bursting out of a Voltorb's explosion.

It also invents a sister for him, Aya, who trains alongside him without ever reaching his level, and so can't lay claim to the Gym.

His battle against Ash plays out in two stages, with the first round featuring a Venonat that evolves mid-battle. The Soul Badge doesn't come easy.

In the manga, a Team Rocket lieutenant

The manga adaptation flips the character completely: there, Koga is a Team Rocket lieutenant, taking orders from the organization's boss.

He conducts experiments on Pokémon, including a Gyarados, and manages to force them to evolve — as he demonstrates on a Rhyhorn turned into a Rhydon.

His real rivalry isn't with the hero but with another Trainer, sparked by a battle in the Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town. They meet again at Silph Co., where he loses once more.

In short

Koga is the only Kanto Gym Leader to have moved up the ranks, and the only one succeeded by his own daughter. A dojo instead of a regular gym, ninja techniques instead of called-out attacks, and a manga that has him switch to the enemy side. The Poison type has never had a better representative.
