He doesn't have a single Pokémon, and yet he's the one who explains everything. Kevin watches over the Michina Ruins with Sheena, his fiancée, in the series' twelfth feature film. Guarding the Michina Ruins as a Pair
Kevin and Sheena don't split the duty; they carry it out together: they are the two guardians of the Michina Ruins, and the character's profile presents Sheena as his fiancée. The site they watch over carries a legend the town passes down, that of a creature of thunder and its master who are said to have changed Michina's destiny — Kevin explicitly ties it to local lore when Sheena brings it up in front of Ash.
Beneath the ruins lies a device capable of detecting shifts in space-time, whose workings Kevin explains to the heroes. The machine has a memory: it's how the guardians tracked, from Michina, the Alamos distortion told in The Rise of Darkrai, then the one at the glacier in Giratina and the Sky Warrior.
The same instrument handles a far weightier calculation: pinpointing the day of Arceus's return. Because the guardians carry a debt. Legend has it that the Jewel of Life was taken from the Pokémon, and the couple fully intends to give it back — and that is what sets in motion Arceus and the Jewel of Life.
The One Who Explains When No One Else Understands
The movie gives Kevin no Pokémon, and never tries to give him one. His narrative function is interpretation: when Sheena makes contact with Dialga and then Palkia, he's the one who explains to the rest of the group what she's doing — connecting with the hearts of the two Legendaries.
When Brock asks why this gift failed with Giratina, Kevin supplies the answer nobody else has: the rage that had taken over the Pokémon made any attempt impossible. The diagnosis enlightens the heroes as much as the viewer, and it comes from a man who has never fought a battle.
His decisive insight comes at the worst possible moment. Facing Arceus, he notices that the Pokémon changes type thanks to its Plates to absorb Dialga and Palkia's attacks, and above all that it has lost the ones that shielded it from the Electric type. It's this weakness, pointed out aloud, that opens the way for Pikachu's Thunderbolt.

Three Times Between the Others and Danger
Kevin doesn't fight, but he's the one who gives the order to pull back. As soon as Giratina appears to face Dialga, he insists that everyone leave rather than let the group watch the duel. He repeats exactly the same order when Arceus gets ready to attack again, before Giratina, returning to help the humans, gets them out of trouble.
In between, he acts with his own hands. A second distortion triggers a storm: he pulls Dawn out of the path of a tree that was about to crush her, then plants himself in front of Sheena to shield her from the torrents of water — which Palkia manages to stop just in time.
The third act is the clearest. When Arceus targets Sheena, after she inadvertently hands it a fake Jewel, Kevin pulls her out of the beam then rushes to her when she's thrown to the ground. Cut off from the group that Dialga sends into the past, he stays behind alone to watch the four Legendaries clash; when they return, the reunion ends in a hug, under Brock's dejected gaze.
An Onion, and a Counterpoint to Damos
The concept art leaves a delightful note from Ken Sugimori: Kevin's hairstyle was inspired by an onion. The same document gives him a slightly nervous temperament and strong feelings for Sheena — two traits the movie shows without ever spelling them out.
The most revealing detail is a deliberate comparison. Kevin was designed to contrast with Damos, the man of the past: where Damos is the stronger of the two, Kevin is a modern man, weaker but educated. His whole role in the plot flows from that design choice.
His restraint even shows in a gag. When Brock starts courting Sheena, Kevin watches in silence without stepping in, and seems stunned to see the suitor's Croagunk punish its own Trainer with a Poison Jab. He watches and he comments: that's exactly who he is.

He's one of the two guardians of the Michina Ruins in the series' twelfth feature film. He shares this role with Sheena, whom the character's profile presents as his fiancée. -

No, none. His place in the story lies elsewhere: explaining Sheena's telepathy, describing the device that detects shifts in space-time, and figuring out how Arceus's Plates work. -
What is Kevin's role against Arceus?
He notices that Arceus changes type with its Plates to withstand Dialga and Palkia, and that it has lost the ones that shielded it from the Electric type. That observation is what lets Pikachu hit it with Thunderbolt. -
Why is Kevin's hairstyle said to come from an onion?
Because Ken Sugimori noted it on his concept art. The same document gives him a slightly nervous temperament and strong feelings for Sheena. -
How are Kevin and Damos connected?
Kevin was designed as his opposite. Damos is a man of the past, and therefore the stronger of the two; Kevin is a modern man, physically weaker but educated.
In short
Kevin is the useful exception in the gallery of movie characters: a character with no Pokémon, no battles and no powers, who is still essential to the climax. He reads a device, he spots the flaw in a god's defenses, he pulls two people out of the path of danger. For him, knowledge takes the place of a team.
