The man Arceus lent its Plates to is also the one who led it into a trap. Damos lives in the distant past of a land where nothing would grow, and he owes his place in collective memory to an act he never intended. His name has come down through the centuries with the label of traitor stuck to it. What makes the character interesting is the gap between that reputation and what really happened.

The Jewel of Life Was Only a Loan
The movie Arceus and the Jewel of Life opens on a barren land saved by Arceus's intervention. Damos witnesses the rescue, then returns the favor: he's the one who helps the Pokémon get its Plates back. So the relationship begins with a service from the deity to the man, not the other way around.
Two reasons then lead Arceus to part with a piece of itself: gratitude, and the state of the land it has just rescued. It entrusts Damos with several Plates which, put together, form the Jewel of Life. The object has one very concrete purpose: making the soil fertile — not a weapon, not a trophy, not a decorative relic.
One detail drives everything that follows: these Plates are lent, not given. Their owner will come back for them, and it's that return that sets the story ablaze. The Jewel itself resurfaces much later in the ruins of Michina Town, guarded by Kevin and Sheena, who both seek to return it to Arceus.

A Betrayal Committed Under Hypnosis
The day Arceus comes to reclaim what belongs to it, Damos leads it straight into an ambush. But he isn't acting of his own free will: he has been put under Hypnosis. It's the act of a man being manipulated, not of an ingrate who wanted to keep the treasure.
The trap only does half the job. Arceus comes out of it weakened and enraged, and vows to come back and settle the score with humanity once its strength returns. That deferred revenge drives the entire film, which takes place centuries after the scene.
That leaves the question of who benefits from the disaster. Marcus has Damos thrown in a cell so he can carry out his own plans undisturbed, and leaves him there. Nothing in this story points to Damos as the one who set the trap; everything makes him the first to be accused.
The Escape, the Battle and the Descendant
Centuries later, Ash, Brock and Dawn travel back in time and are locked up by Marcus in that very prison. There they come face to face with Damos himself, the living man their own era counts among the traitors.
The way out owes nothing to the Trainers. It's Damos's Pokémon that clears the way — his Pichu gets the group out of their cell, and everyone rushes to Arceus's aid. This little Electric type is known to have two moves, Thunderbolt and Iron Tail.
The battle that follows is tough, and they only just win it. Arceus survives but must return to its own dimension to regain its strength: the threat is averted, not erased. As for Damos, he meets Sheena, his descendant — who, until this journey, saw him as nothing but a traitor. The scene amounts to a rehabilitation.

In short
Damos only gets a handful of scenes, and yet he single-handedly carries the crux of the movie: it was his hand that led Arceus into the trap, and it wasn't his will guiding it. So the time travel isn't only about saving a Legendary Pokémon — it's also about giving a man back his good name. A rare example of a supporting character whose real stake is his reputation.
