Gloria: The Female Avatar Who Carries the Galar Adventure

1655 words | Reading time: 8 minutes
Gloria only exists if the player chooses her. She is the female playable character of Pokémon Sword and Shield: picking her erases Victor from the story, and the Galar adventure then plays out under her green beanie. No set name, no fixed face, but a tightly scripted journey — that of a small-town beginner thrust in front of the packed stadiums of the Gym Challenge.

A Nameless Avatar, and No Room for Two
Gloria is the female protagonist of the eighth generation. The game never lets the hero's two possible faces coexist: choosing her simply removes Victor from the story, and the reverse is just as true. A playthrough only ever knows one of the two.
Like every main-series avatar since the sixth generation, she arrives without a set identity. No name is predefined at the start, and skin tone, hairstyle and eye color — brown by default — as well as her wardrobe are all left up to the player.
The name itself came from outside the game: it circulated in the promotional material for Sword and Shield, where the avatar was also called "Shield," before her arrival in Pokémon Masters EX made it canon. In European languages, it comes from the Latin gloria, "glory"; the Japanese Yūri, for its part, combines the character for excellence with the one for victory.

From Postwick to the Roof of Hammerlocke Stadium
She lives in Postwick, in the southeast of the region, and is watching a match on her Rotom Phone when her neighbor Hop bursts in: his brother Leon, the reigning Champion, is passing through Wedgehurst. The Champion brings back three Pokémon; Gloria picks one and fights her first battle in the garden next door.
A stray Wooloo then leads the two beginners into the Slumbering Weald, where a creature lurking in the mist leaves them unconscious — it's Leon who comes to get them. Then come the Wedgehurst lab, where Sonia adds the Pokédex function to the Rotom Phone, the Dynamax Band handed over by Professor Magnolia, and finally the Champion's signed endorsement that opens the competition to her.
From there, the journey follows the house format: eight Badges, a string of rivals and Team Yell standing in the way, before a final tournament. The turning point comes with the Darkest Day — the capture of Eternatus on the roof of the stadium in Hammerlocke and, once Leon has been dethroned, the encounter with Zacian in Sword or Zamazenta in Shield.

The Only Pokémon the Story Forces on Her
Talking about "Gloria's team" doesn't make much sense: most of her roster is up to the player. Only the mandatory steps are documented, starting with the initial choice between Grookey, a Grass type, Scorbunny, a Fire type, and Sobble, a Water type.
Two scripted catches come on top of that. A Toxel is picked up on Route 5, and Route 6 yields the hybrid Fossil Pokémon unique to this generation. That Toxel is also the only Pokémon the anime explicitly links to the heroine.
The expansions set their own milestones. On the Isle of Armor, Gloria trains under Mustard, crosses paths with Klara in Sword or Avery in Shield, and leaves with a Kubfu whose final form depends on which tower she climbs, the Tower of Waters or the Tower of Darkness. In the Crown Tundra, she takes on one research mission after another into the regional Legendaries on behalf of Peony.
A Wardrobe That Changes with the Terrain
The default look sums up the region: a green beanie whose white trim and pom-pom form a Poké Ball, a gray wool cardigan, a fuchsia dress, green tartan socks, brown ankle boots and a backpack with long straps. Every piece can be swapped out in the game — this outfit is only a calling card.
Three uniforms, however, are off-limits to customization. In Gyms, she switches to a white jersey, shorts and long socks, with red shoes, the Dynamax Band clearly visible on her right wrist. At the Master Dojo on the Isle of Armor, with her hair up in a bun, she wears a yellow track jacket, black short shorts, knee pads and yellow sneakers; in the Crown Tundra, a red cold-weather suit with four pouches, boots, a brown hiking backpack and a black cap.
Sometimes the details say more than the costume. The backpack belonged to her mother, as a text in her bedroom points out while she packs her things, and the number 227 printed on her Challenge jersey refers to February 27, the day Pokémon Red and Green came out in 1996. The design, by Megumi Mizutani, also earned the heroine a flood of Scottish-accent memes: Galar is modeled on an upside-down map of Great Britain, so her home village sits at the far south.
Anime, Manga, Cards and Masters EX
On screen, she's little more than an extra. A post-credits scene shows her, alongside Victor, hailing a taxi driver sitting on stone steps with his nose in his newspaper; elsewhere, she's glimpsed for a moment with a Toxel in a Flying Taxi, outside the train station in Wyndon. The manga is more generous: her counterpart, Casey Shield, takes on the Gym Challenge to find the Pokémon she lost in the Slumbering Weald.
The Trading Card Game welcomed her with the Brilliant Stars expansion, released on February 25, 2022. Her card pulls three Basic Pokémon with no Rule Box out of the deck, straight onto the Bench and before shuffling — which rules out Pokémon V and Pokémon-GX.
Pokémon Masters EX added her on November 30, 2020: together with Zacian, she was the game's first representative of the eighth generation. Depending on her outfit, she teams up with that Zacian, a Thwackey, an Inteleon, an Urshifu or a Cinderace, and her partners settle a point the games had left open — her playthrough is a Pokémon Sword one, started with Sobble. Victor only joined her there 676 days later, the longest gap on record between a protagonist and their counterpart.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Who is Gloria in Pokémon Sword and Shield?
She is the female playable character of the eighth generation. She lives in Postwick, in southeastern Galar, and enters the Gym Challenge after receiving an endorsement from Champion Leon. -
What's the difference between Gloria and Victor?
They are the two possible avatars of the same adventure. Choosing one makes the other disappear from the story: the two never coexist in the same playthrough. -
Which Pokémon does Gloria have?
Her team is up to the player. The games only impose a first partner, chosen from Grookey, Scorbunny and Sobble, a Toxel caught on Route 5, then Eternatus and Zacian or Zamazenta at the end of the journey. Pokémon Masters EX, for its part, specifies that she started with Sobble in Pokémon Sword. -
Where does the name Gloria come from?
From the Latin gloria, "glory," in every European language. The Japanese name, Yūri, combines the character for excellence with the one for victory. The name only became official when the character arrived in Pokémon Masters EX. -
Does Gloria appear in the anime?
Barely. She's seen in a post-credits scene hailing a taxi with Victor, and briefly aboard a Flying Taxi, with a Toxel, outside the Wyndon train station.
In short
In Sword and Shield, Gloria has neither a written personality nor an imposed team: she is an empty space that the player steps in to fill, with a Poké Ball beanie and a tournament to win. It's the spin-off media that give her an outline — a Toxel in a Flying Taxi, a low-key collectible card, sync pairs that end up writing her an official playthrough. Of all the protagonists, she's the one whose name promised the most: gloria, glory.
