Size 1 m  ·  Weight 80.5 kg ·  Abilities Soul-Heart

Evolutions None: Magearna does not evolve and is not the evolution of any Pokémon; its evolutionary line has only one member. It can, however, Mega Evolve into Mega Magearna while holding a Magearnite, with its Trainer carrying a Key Stone — a temporary, battle-only transformation that is not an evolution. Its Original Color form isn't one either: it is a purely cosmetic variant, obtained by completing the National Pokédex in Pokémon HOME

Its true body is the heart it carries. Magearna was not born: it was built some five hundred years ago by a scientist. Beneath its metal armor, this Steel- and Fairy-type Mythical Pokémon from Alola hides an organ called Soul-Heart.

Who Is Magearna?

Listed as #801 in the National Pokédex, Magearna is the "Artificial Pokémon" of the seventh generation, the Alola generation. It was in fact the very first Pokémon of that generation to be revealed, on February 10, 2016, through a leak from CoroCoro magazine.

One meter tall, 80.5 kilograms, and a silhouette made entirely of spheres: a head ringed by a seven-toothed gear, two large rabbit-like ears trimmed in gold, big red eyes with pink pupils, and a lower body that looks like a ball gown.

When it sleeps or feels sad, it tucks its head, arms and legs into this gown and takes on the appearance of a Poké Ball. The Pokémon Moon Pokédex goes further: "Its true self is an artificial soul called Soul-Heart. »

Type, Ability and Fleur Cannon

Steel and Fairy together make one of the sturdiest defensive combinations in the game. Only two types deal double damage to it, Fire and Ground, and no type hits it for quadruple damage.

On the other side, the list is long: it takes half damage from Normal, Flying, Rock, Grass, Psychic, Ice, Dark and Fairy, cuts Bug down to a quarter of the damage, and is completely immune to Dragon and Poison.

Its only Ability bears the name of that organ, Soul-Heart, and no other Pokémon has it: whenever a Pokémon faints on the field, for whatever reason, its Special Attack rises by one stage. In a Double Battle, an ally going down is enough.

Its 600 base stat total peaks at 130 Special Attack, and it has no Hidden Ability. Finally, it is the only Pokémon that can learn Fleur Cannon, a 130-power special Fairy-type move whose drawback lowers its own Special Attack by two stages.

Mega Magearna: The Hidden Mode of Mega Dimension

Here is the point to pin down precisely: Mega Magearna doesn't come with the base game Pokémon Legends: Z-A, but with its paid expansion Mega Dimension, released on December 10, 2025 — one of the nineteen Mega Evolutions it adds.

Its Mega Stone is called Magearnite. You earn it at the end of the side mission "Magearna, Wake Up!", given by Bridjet at Quasartico Inc., in exchange for 999 Mega Shards ; the same mission also gives you Magearna itself.

Its types don't budge an inch, still Steel and Fairy. On the other hand, it grows to 1.3 meters and 248.1 kilograms and gains 30 points of Attack, 30 of Speed and 40 of Special Attack: the latter reaches 170, a record for the Fairy type.

It then turns red and gold, its gear splits into two four-toothed half-gears that levitate around it, and its pupils become white crosses. A gala-worthy look that calls for a display case of Pokémon figures.

The Pokédex explains the marvel: the Mega Stone is the key to a mechanism secretly installed five hundred years ago to disable its internal limiter. It "suppresses its budding emotions in order to crush every enemy." Its Ability, however, isn't documented anywhere.

Evolution: none, and the Mega isn't one

Let's be clear: Magearna does not evolve and is not the evolution of any Pokémon. Its line has only a single slot, and no level, no stone, no trade and no friendship will ever change that.

The Mega Evolution contradicts none of this, since it isn't an evolution: it requires a Key Stone on the Trainer's side, lasts only for the duration of the battle and ends when the Pokémon faints. Only one Pokémon per team can use it.

Its second look isn't one either. The Original Color form shows it as it was when first created: golden, with red ears and a red upper gown, like a real Poké Ball. The change is purely cosmetic ; you get it by completing the National Pokédex in Pokémon HOME.

Five Hundred Years, a King's Daughter and a QR Code

Then there's its story. Magearna was created by a scientist some five hundred years ago, and its original colors betray a gift intended for a royal family: its ornaments, the Pokédex says, delighted a king's daughter.

The nineteenth movie, Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel, explores this past: it is tied to the Princess of the Azoth Kingdom, and its Soul-Heart becomes the crux of the story. A fairy-tale character you can also find as a Pokémon plush.

In the games, it can't be found anywhere in the wild: you get it through a special QR code, to be scanned in Pokémon Sun and Moon as well as in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Available since December 7, 2016, with no end date, it requires you to have beaten the Pokémon League and gives you a Magearna at level 50 in Hau'oli City.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Does Magearna evolve?
No. Magearna has no evolution and is not the evolution of any Pokémon: its evolutionary line has only one member. No level, no stone, no held item, no trade and no friendship requirement will make it change species. Its two transformations, Mega Evolution and the Original Color form, are not evolutions.
  • Does Mega Magearna exist, and in which game?
Yes, and this is the point not to get wrong: Mega Magearna was not introduced in the base game Pokémon Legends: Z-A, but in its paid expansion Mega Dimension, released on December 10, 2025, which adds nineteen Mega Evolutions. Magearna has to hold its Mega Stone, the Magearnite, and you need a Key Stone. The Magearnite is the reward for side mission number 195, Magearna, Wake Up!, given by Bridjet at Quasartico Inc., in exchange for 999 Mega Shards — the same mission also gives you Magearna.
  • What does Mega Evolution change for Magearna?
Its types don't change: it stays Steel and Fairy. It goes from 1 meter to 1.3 meters and from 80.5 to 248.1 kilograms, and gains 30 Attack, 40 Special Attack and 30 Speed: its base stat total climbs from 600 to 700 and its Special Attack reaches 170, the highest of the entire Fairy type. Its HP, Defense and Special Defense stay the same. It turns red and gold, and its seven-toothed gear splits into two four-toothed half-gears that levitate around it.
  • What is Magearna's Ability, and what about its Mega's?
Magearna has a single Ability, Soul-Heart, with no second Ability and no Hidden Ability. It is its signature Ability, and it is the only Pokémon that has it: whenever a Pokémon faints in battle, for whatever reason, Magearna's Special Attack rises by one stage, and in a Double Battle an ally fainting is also enough to trigger it. As for Mega Magearna, no reference source documents its Ability to date: Bulbapedia lists it as unknown, Poképédia leaves the field blank and PokéAPI returns nothing. It is therefore not listed here.
  • What are Magearna's weaknesses?
Only two, and neither is quadruple: Fire and Ground deal double damage to it. Beyond that, the Steel and Fairy combination is one of the most resilient in the game. It halves damage from eight types — Normal, Flying, Rock, Grass, Psychic, Ice, Dark and Fairy — takes only a quarter of the damage from Bug, and is completely immune to Dragon and Poison. The five remaining types, Steel, Fighting, Water, Electric and Ghost, deal normal damage to it.
  • How do you get Magearna and its Original Color form?
Magearna is obtained through a special QR code to scan in Pokémon Sun and Moon as well as in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. It has been distributed since December 7, 2016, with no end date, but you must have beaten the Pokémon League to use it: Magearna then appears in Hau'oli City, at level 50, knowing Fleur Cannon. In Mega Dimension, you receive it in-game at the end of side mission 195. Its Original Color form, on the other hand, requires completing the National Pokédex in Pokémon HOME, from Bulbasaur to Eternatus; it only changes its colors, never its stats, type or Ability.

In short

A five-hundred-year-old machine, an artificial heart for a soul and a hidden mode that only the Magearnite can awaken: Magearna will never evolve, but it still had one last secret. It took five centuries to find the key.
