Who Is Guzzlord?

Listed as #799 in the National Pokédex, Guzzlord is the "Junkivore Pokémon" of the seventh generation, the generation of Pokémon Sun and Moon. It stands 5.5 meters tall and weighs 888 kilos, is genderless, and is neither Legendary nor Mythical.

It is one of the eleven Ultra Beasts, a family of Pokémon from other worlds, collectively known as Ultra Space, that burst out through Ultra Wormholes. Each one has been given a code name: Guzzlord's is UB-05 Glutton.

Its spherical body is almost entirely black, with a huge yellow mouth in the middle and a cyan interior bristling with spikes. Two pincer-shaped tongues stick out from the sides of its maw even when it is closed, and its tail looks like a medieval mace.

Dark and Dragon: One Immunity, Six Resistances, One Quadruple Weakness

The combination of Dark and Dragon has plenty of pleasant surprises: Guzzlord is completely immune to Psychic, and it takes half damage from Fire, Water, Grass, Electric, Ghost and Dark, for a total of six resistances. Six other types deal normal damage to it.

The flip side, though, is brutal. Fighting, Bug, Ice and Dragon deal double damage to it, and Fairy hits four times as hard: that is the only quadruple weakness on its chart, and by far the danger to watch out for.

Its only ability is Beast Boost, shared by the eleven Ultra Beasts and by them alone: every time Guzzlord knocks out a Pokémon with a move, its highest stat goes up by one stage. No Ultra Beast has a hidden ability.

Don't get it backwards: Beast Boost does not reduce any damage taken, since it is a purely offensive ability. The stat that gets boosted is the highest one after IVs, EVs and Nature, HP excluded — which, in Guzzlord's case, rules out its best stat.

Wildly Lopsided Stats

With 223 HP, Guzzlord has the biggest HP pool of any Dark type: the runner-up, Ting-Lu, tops out at 155. Across the entire Pokédex, special forms aside, only Blissey (255) and Chansey (250) do better.

The rest is just as uneven: 101 Attack, 97 Special Attack, but 53 Defense, 53 Special Defense and 43 Speed, for a total of 570 points. A mountain of HP perched on tiny defenses.

A juicy detail: its six stats are all prime numbers. That is a hallmark of the Ultra Beasts, with Naganadel's Speed being the only known exception.

Its 888 kilos make it the heaviest Dark-type Pokémon, but not the heaviest in the whole series: by the numbers it ranks sixth, behind Cosmoem and Celesteela (999.9 kg), Groudon and Eternatus (950 kg) and Mudsdale (920 kg). Celesteela, also an Ultra Beast, outweighs it.

Evolution: none, and no Mega either

No ambiguity here: Guzzlord does not evolve and is not the evolution of any Pokémon. Its evolutionary line contains only itself, and Poipole remains the only Ultra Beast able to evolve, into Naganadel.

No Mega Evolution either, and no regional form or Gigantamax form: the only Megas from the seventh generation belong to Crabominable, Golisopod, Drampa, Magearna and Zeraora. No Ultra Beast has one, and Guzzlord has just a single form.

Since it cannot breed, there is no hatching one: in Pokémon Sun and Moon, you find it at level 70 deep inside Resolution Cave, on Poni Island, during Looker's missions. A silhouette that makes it a perfect display-case monster as a Pokémon figure.

In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, you encounter it at level 60 in Ultra Ruin, one of the Ultra Space worlds reached via Ultra Warp Ride, and this time in unlimited numbers. The Beast Balls, designed specifically for Ultra Beasts, are the obvious choice there.

The Devourer and the Ruined City

The Pokédex entries are chilling. Pokémon Sun: "One of the Ultra Beasts. It has reportedly been seen devouring mountains and skyscrapers." Pokémon Moon follows up: "It is constantly eating, but it does not seem to produce any droppings. »

Hence the question no one can settle: where does everything it swallows go? No droppings have ever been found, and the prevailing theory is that it all gets converted into energy. Enough to liken the beast to a black hole.

Ultra Sun is even more unsettling: "This creature from another world is dangerous in ours, but it seems to be very common in its own." One of those other worlds can be visited: Ultra Ruin is a ruined futuristic city whose air has become unbreathable.

Only one man remains there, in a protective suit, who says that everyone else has migrated to other planets and that he comes across fewer and fewer Guzzlord, since there is nothing left to devour. A monster that, as a Pokémon plush, becomes harmless again.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Does Guzzlord evolve?
No. Guzzlord does not evolve and is not the evolution of any Pokémon: its evolutionary line contains only itself, and it has just one form. It is genderless, belongs to the Undiscovered Egg Group and therefore cannot breed. Of the eleven Ultra Beasts, only one evolves: Poipole, which becomes Naganadel.
  • Does Guzzlord have a Mega Evolution?
No: no Mega Evolution, no regional form and no Gigantamax form. No Ultra Beast has any of them. Of the 88 species of the seventh generation, the only ones with a Mega are Crabominable, Golisopod, Drampa, Magearna and Zeraora. Watch out for a common trap: Mega Scolipede does exist, but Scolipede is #545, a fifth-generation Pokémon, not an Alolan one.
  • What is Guzzlord's ability?
Beast Boost, and nothing else: Guzzlord has no hidden ability, like every Ultra Beast. Its effect is offensive: every time Guzzlord knocks out a Pokémon with a move, its highest stat goes up by one stage. HP is excluded from the calculation, and the stat that gets boosted is determined after taking IVs, EVs and Nature into account. This ability does not reduce any damage taken.
  • What are Guzzlord's weaknesses?
As a Dark and Dragon type, it takes four times the damage from Fairy moves, its only quadruple weakness, and double damage from Fighting, Bug, Ice and Dragon moves. On the other hand, it is completely immune to Psychic and takes half damage from six types: Fire, Water, Grass, Electric, Ghost and Dark. The six remaining types, Normal, Flying, Poison, Ground, Rock and Steel, deal normal damage to it.
  • Is Guzzlord the heaviest Pokémon?
No. Its 888 kilos make it the heaviest Dark-type Pokémon, but only the sixth-heaviest species in the Pokédex. Ahead of it are Cosmoem and Celesteela at 999.9 kilos, Groudon and Eternatus at 950 kilos, and Mudsdale at 920 kilos. Since Celesteela is also an Ultra Beast, Guzzlord isn't even the heaviest in its own family.
  • Where can you find Guzzlord?
In Pokémon Sun and Moon, it appears at level 70 deep inside Resolution Cave, on Poni Island, only during the Ultra Beast missions; if you knock it out, it reappears right away. In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, you encounter it at level 60 in Ultra Ruin, a world of Ultra Space reached via Ultra Warp Ride, and this time in unlimited numbers.

In short

A bottomless appetite, 888 kilos of teeth and pincers, and a ruined city with almost nothing left to devour: Guzzlord ranks among the most disturbing creatures in Alola. And it does not evolve.
