Who Is Celesteela?
Listed as #797 in the National Pokédex, Celesteela is the "Launch Pokémon" of the seventh generation, the Alola generation. Its body looks like an unlikely cross between a space shuttle and a bamboo shoot.
Its small white head wears a gray "hat" bristling with four spikes in an X, which extends into long, turquoise-edged hair: the upper half of its silhouette evokes a young Japanese woman in a kimono.
The lower half is pure machinery. Its two gray arms set apart from its body look like bamboo stalks, and beneath its conical skirt hide more black, blue-ringed shoots that irresistibly call to mind rocket thrusters.
Its six stats are all prime numbers — 97, 101, 103, 107, 101 and 61 — a trait shared by nearly all Ultra Beasts, with Naganadel's Speed (121) as the only exception. They total 570 points, spread almost evenly, except for a noticeably lower Speed.

999.9 Kilograms: The Heaviest Pokémon in the Series
At 999.9 kilos, Celesteela has only one equal, Cosmoem, which weighs exactly the same. The full Pokédex ranking puts them both at the top, ahead of Primal Groudon and its 999.7 kilograms.
It is also the heaviest Steel-type Pokémon and the heaviest Flying-type Pokémon — in that second category, it weighs more than double that of the runner-up, Mega Rayquaza.
Its 9.2 meters, on the other hand, set no record: they put it level with Steelix, while Wailord and Eternatus far exceed it. Its counterpart Kartana, by contrast, measures 0.3 meters and weighs 100 grams.
That weight is a weapon: Heavy Slam hits harder the heavier the user is compared with its target. Ironically, Celesteela also learns Autotomize, which sheds 100 kilos to gain Speed.
Steel and Flying: Two Weaknesses, Two Immunities
The combination is one of the sturdiest in the game. Only Fire and Electric deal double damage to it, and there is no quadruple weakness : the weak points of Steel and those of Flying never overlap.
On the other side, ten types break their teeth on it. Normal, Flying, Psychic, Dragon, Steel and Fairy deal only half damage, Bug and Grass a quarter, and two can't touch it at all: Poison and Ground.
That Ground immunity disappears, though, if it gets pinned to the ground: under Gravity, after Smack Down or while holding an Iron Ball, its Steel type takes over and Ground-type attacks then deal double damage.
As for Abilities, it has only one and no hidden ability : Beast Boost, shared by all eleven Ultra Beasts. Don't get it backwards: it doesn't reduce anything at all — it raises its highest stat by one stage when it knocks out an opponent.

An Ultra Beast Exclusive to Pokémon Moon
The Ultra Beasts form a family of eleven Pokémon from Ultra Space, arriving through Ultra Wormholes. The UB Task Force gave each one a code name: Celesteela is UB-04 Blaster, and Kartana UB-04 Blade.
Contrary to what people often assume, Celesteela is exclusive to Pokémon Moon and Ultra Moon, with Kartana going to Sun and Ultra Sun. You can find it at level 65 in Malie Garden and the Haina Desert, and at level 60 in theUltra Crater, its home world.
Its family line begins and ends with itself : it does not evolve and is not the evolution of any Pokémon. No Mega Evolution, no regional form, no Gigantamax — no Ultra Beast appears among the 93 Mega Pokémon recorded to date.
Princess Kaguya, a Lunar Probe and a Forest in Ashes
According to Wicke of the Aether Foundation, its most surprising trait is the energy it holds inside: a flammable gas it releases through its two enormous arms, mostly to take flight. It is thought to be powerful enough to reach space.
The Pokédex doesn't downplay anything. Pokémon Moon saw it "expelling gas from its two arms and reducing an entire forest to ashes," while Pokémon Sun merely reports having spotted it streaking across the sky at high speed.
Its French name, Bamboiselle, blends "bambou" (bamboo) and "mademoiselle", and its silhouette references The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, in which Princess Kaguya returns to the Moon. It also recalls the SELENE probe, nicknamed KAGUYA in Japan and placed in lunar orbit in 2007.
Despite its Steel typing, its body behaves like a plant and absorbs nutrients from the soil : that's how it recharges, planted in the ground, before taking off. A spaceship silhouette that belongs with fans of Pokémon figures and plush toys.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Is Celesteela really the heaviest Pokémon?
Yes, jointly. At 999.9 kg, it shares the record for heaviest Pokémon with Cosmoem, the middle stage of Cosmog's line; next come Primal Groudon at 999.7 kg, then Groudon and Eternatus at 950 kg. On its own, it is also the heaviest Steel-type Pokémon and the heaviest Flying-type Pokémon. Gigantamax forms are left out of the ranking, since their official weight isn't published. Its 9.2 meters, however, are not a height record: it is tied with Steelix, and Wailord, Dondozo and Eternatus are all taller. -
What are Celesteela's weaknesses?
Very little hurts it. Only two types deal double damage to it, Fire and Electric, and it has no quadruple weakness. Six types deal only half damage: Normal, Flying, Psychic, Dragon, Steel and Fairy. Two others deal only a quarter, Bug and Grass. It is outright immune to Poison and Ground. That leaves six types that hit it normally: Water, Ice, Fighting, Rock, Ghost and Dark. One caveat: if Gravity or Smack Down has been used, or if it holds an Iron Ball, it loses its Ground immunity, and Ground-type attacks then deal double damage because of its Steel type. -
In which version can you catch Celesteela?
In Pokémon Moon and Pokémon Ultra Moon. The split is counterintuitive, since its counterpart Kartana is reserved for Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Ultra Sun. In Pokémon Moon, you encounter it at level 65 in Malie Garden and the Haina Desert; in Ultra Moon, at level 60 in the Ultra Crater, its home world, reached via Ultra Warp Ride. It later returns in the Dynamax Adventures of the Max Lair, in the Crown Tundra expansion of Pokémon Sword and Shield, this time in both versions. -
Does Celesteela have an evolution or a Mega Evolution?
Neither. It does not evolve and is not the evolution of any Pokémon; it is also genderless and classified in the Undiscovered Egg Group, which prevents it from breeding. Of the eleven Ultra Beasts, only one can evolve: Poipole. None of them appears among the 93 recorded Mega Pokémon either: the only Mega Evolutions of the seventh generation are those of Crabominable, Golisopod, Drampa, Magearna and Zeraora. Watch out for the trap: Mega Scolipede does exist, but Scolipede is #545, a fifth-generation Pokémon. -
What does the Beast Boost Ability do?
It raises Celesteela's highest stat by one stage when it knocks out another Pokémon during its turn. The stat in question is the highest of the six once IVs, EVs and nature are taken into account. Contrary to popular belief, this Ability doesn't reduce any damage taken: the Ability that softens super-effective moves is called Prism Armor and belongs to Necrozma, not to the Ultra Beasts. Beast Boost is the Ability shared by all eleven Ultra Beasts, and none of them has a Hidden Ability. -
Does Celesteela have a signature move?
No. None of the sixty-five moves it can learn is exclusive to it: the rarest, Autotomize, is shared with forty-three other Pokémon. It does hold one curiosity, found by cross-checking every learnset in the game: it is the only non-Grass-type Pokémon that learns Seed Bomb by leveling up, at level 47 in Pokémon Sun and Moon.
In short
A bamboo princess on one side, a space shuttle on the other, Celesteela holds the Pokédex weight record without ever looking heavy. A visitor from another world waiting for just one thing: to fire up its thrusters again.
