Sina: Sycamore's Assistant Who Expands Your Pokédex
Share
1259 words | Reading time: 6 minutes
Sina almost never goes anywhere alone. An assistant to Professor Sycamore, she travels through the Kalos adventure alongside Dexio, pops up at very specific crossroads along the way, then leaves just as quickly. Her role boils down to a simple mechanic: at almost every encounter, something gets added to the player's Pokédex or Bag.

Sycamore's Assistant and Her Stated Specialty
Kalos entrusts Professor Sycamore with a lab and a small team. Sina is one of them: a young woman with dark purple hair, tasked with assisting the professor on the Fairy type in particular.
She practically never works solo. Dexio is with her at almost every appearance, to the point where it's hard to talk about one without mentioning the other: they arrive together, they leave together.
The player first runs into them at the end of Route 4, before even seeing the lab. It's Sina who invites the player to go there — so her very first line consists of sending the player to the professor.
Three Visits, Three Pokédex Expansions
Sina doesn't reappear at random. On Route 8, she and her partner add the Coastal Kalos section to the Pokédex: the region is split into separate catalogs, and each encounter unlocks one.
The second visit takes place in the gatehouse linking Coumarine City to Route 13, and this time it's the Mountain Kalos section that gets added. The logic is the same as on Route 8: the catalog arrives along with the area it covers.
Her very last appearance takes place at Lumiose Station, where she hands over the National Pokédex. Sina thus closes the series she opened on Route 4: she enters the adventure with a partial Pokédex and leaves it by making it complete.
The Story's Two Masked Strangers
Midway through, Sina and Dexio point the player toward the Kalos Power Plant. They turn up there again with their faces masked, hand out Full Restores and announce that the path to Lumiose City has just opened up.
The same routine plays out again at Lysandre Labs, where the two masked figures leave Revives behind. Meanwhile, Sina acts alone in Anistar City: she gives out Repeat Balls there and sends the player to consult someone who knows about Legendary Pokémon.
Their most concrete intervention comes after the ultimate weapon is fired: they destroy the spy receiver hidden in the Holo Caster. They are seen again in the parade held in honor of the player and their friends.
Alola, the Battle Tree and a Second Career
Sina doesn't stop at Kalos. The duo reappears much later, in Heahea City, this time to give the player the Zygarde Cube — an item that nothing in her Kalos journey had hinted at.
You can also battle her, but not at the same point depending on the version: Moon offers the battle right after that meeting, while Sun saves her for the Battle Tree, very late in the game. Her team there draws notably on species exclusive to Moon and Ultra Moon.
The mobile game added her on November 15, 2024, in her Kalos outfit and paired with a Glaceon. Her description there presents her as a Trainer who set out to explore Kalos with her own Pokédex, received from the professor, and as a kind of mentor to Serena and friends — kind-hearted, even if it means being overprotective.
🔥 Sina's Glaceon has its own shelf: see the section dedicated to Eevee.
A Masked Thief in the Manga, and a Name That Leans Left
The manga adaptation casts her against type. At the start of the second volume of the X & Y arc, she bursts in masked with Dexio and accuses the heroes of stealing a Charmander, before grabbing the Pokémon herself and making off with it.
The getaway doesn't get far: Tierno catches up with them, then the two masked figures slip away the moment Professor Sycamore shows up. So the manga reuses the mask gimmick from the games, but turns it against the heroes.
Her name, for its part, comes from the Latin "sinistra," meaning left — a choice shared by every language version. A more surprising detail: Sina and Dexio have never received official artwork for the games they appear in, despite the place they hold in them.

In short
Sina has no Gym and no stated ambition, and yet the Kalos adventure doesn't end without her: the three Pokédex sections, the opening of the road to Lumiose City, the disabling of the spy receiver all go through her appearances. The game hands her the most thankless role there is, the cog that keeps the game moving — and it's only when you retrace the story that you realize how much she matters.
