Dexio in Pokémon Sun and Moon

Dexio: Professor Sycamore's Right Hand in Kalos and Alola

1596 words | Reading time: 7 minutes

His name means "right," and right-hand man is exactly his job. Dexio assists Professor Sycamore in Kalos, almost always flanked by Sina, and the duo sticks with the player long enough to resurface several regions later. He has no Gym and no title to defend: his role is to hand over an item, open a door, expand a Pokédex, then vanish until the next stage. A low-key function, yet one that gives shape to an entire adventure.

The Assistant Who Never Appears Alone

Dexio works in the lab of Professor Sycamore, and his specialty there has a precise name: the Fairy type is the field where he backs up the Professor. Over the course of the adventure, he comes back at regular intervals, never on his own: Sina is with him in almost every one of his appearances, so much so that the two names end up standing for one and the same role.

The label is anything but random. "Dexio" derives from the Greek "dexiós," meaning right, and the reference holds in every language of the game, from the Japanese デクシオ to the Korean 덱시오. Naming an assistant after the right hand amounts to writing his job onto his birth certificate.

That status comes at a price in visibility. Neither he nor Sina received official artwork for the games they appear in, even though they run through the story from start to finish. The duo is everywhere in the plot and nowhere in the imagery that goes with it.

One More Pokédex at Every Meeting

The first meeting takes place at the end of Route 4, in the Kalos adventure. Dexio invites the player to stop by the Professor's lab and gives them TM27 Return: that first contact ends with a gift, which immediately puts the character on the right side of the story.

The reunions that follow are measured in Pokédex pages. On Route 8, the Coastal Kalos section is added to the device; in the gatehouse linking Coumarine City to Route 13, it's the Mountain Kalos section. The player doesn't have to ask for anything: the pair waits along the way and handles the update.

The last of these stops plays out at the train station in Lumiose City, once the crisis is over: Dexio adds the National Pokédex. Taken together, his appearances sketch out less a personality than a progression mechanic, the one that expands the player's tool tier after tier.

The Two Masked Figures of the Crisis

When the plot takes its turn, the pair switches modes. Sina and Dexio first point the player toward the Kalos Power Plant, then they reappear there with their faces covered, hand out Full Heals and announce that the road to Lumiose City is open again. Nothing they say draws attention to the disguise: they simply carry on with their support work.

The same routine plays out at Lysandre Labs, where the two masked figures hand out Revives this time before the assault. In the meantime, Dexio shows up unmasked in Dendemille Town, alongside the Professor: the mask isn't a permanent disguise, just field gear.

Their most concrete contribution comes after the ultimate weapon has fired. Sina and Dexio destroy the rogue receiver grafted onto the Holo Caster network, cutting off the communication channel the enemy had forced on everyone. The duo shows up again at the parade held in honor of the player and their friends.

Alola, the Zygarde Cube and Mega Evolution

Several games later, the duo resurfaces very far from Kalos. Dexio and Sina approach the player in Heahea City, on Akala Island, and entrust them with a Zygarde Cube. The Alola generation thus recycles them as liaison agents between two regions.

The visit isn't limited to handing over an item. In Pokémon Sun, a battle immediately follows this first meeting; a second showdown awaits the player on Poni Island, once the Champion title is in the bag. At the end of that match, Dexio passes on what you need to trigger Mega Evolution, a mechanic born in Kalos that he has brought along in his luggage.

His presence then varies from one version to another. In Pokémon Moon, he serves as an opponent at the Battle Tree; his Alola teams tell the story: Espeon, Slowking, Metagross, Alolan Raichu and an Alakazam that can Mega Evolve, and it's an Espeon again that has been teaming up with him in the mobile game since November 2024. One constant runs through these appearances: he shows a clear preference for the Psychic type.

🔮 His soft spot for the Psychic type has a face: there's a whole section for Espeon.

The Manga, Then the Mobile Game

The manga adaptation doesn't give him the same role. Right at the start of the second volume of the X & Y arc, Dexio bursts onto the scene masked alongside Sina and accuses the heroes of stealing a Charmander; in the middle of the quarrel, he snatches the Pokémon and runs off.

The getaway doesn't last long. Tierno catches up with the two runaways, and the arrival of Professor Sycamore is enough to make them slip away without a word of explanation. The mask serves the same purpose as in the games: putting off the moment you figure out which side they're on.

The character eventually found a second career on mobile. He was added there on November 17, 2024, in his original outfit, and teams up with an Espeon. His profile describes him as a mentor of sorts to Serena and her friends, very polite, someone who sides with Sina, and who traveled across Kalos after receiving his Pokédex from the Professor.

In short

Dexio has no personal arc, no final reveal, not even official artwork in the games he appears in: he is defined by what he hands over and by the person he stands next to. It's a rare role in the series, that of the helper who makes the adventure possible without ever competing with the player for it. His name said so from the start, and the game sticks to it to the very end: a right hand doesn't lead, it extends.
