Professor Bellis: The Egg Researcher of the Island of Pasio
Share
965 words | Reading time: 4 minutes
An island that didn't grow there on its own, and a Professor who doesn't study any species. Bellis works on Pasio, the one and only setting of Pokémon Masters EX, and what she studies is a relationship rather than a creature: what binds a Trainer to their Pokémon. The game also gives her a very concrete job, handing out the Eggs the Kanto starters hatch from.

A Professor Posted to an Island Built from Scratch
The series' Professors are usually tied to a region and its wildlife. Bellis, on the other hand, works on man-made land: Pasio, the artificial island that serves as the one and only setting of Pokémon Masters EX.
Her subject is neither a species nor an ecosystem, but a relationship. She studies what binds a Pokémon to its Trainer, and more specifically sync stones — the centerpiece of the sync pair system the whole game is built around.
Players meet her right after the tutorial: she is one of the very first figures the game puts in their path. Depending on the character chosen, it's Scottie or Bettie who hears her explanations, and in our Pasio gallery she sits alongside the prince Lear.
Kanto Eggs, Her Contribution to the Gameplay
The arrival of Eggs, with update 1.9.0, gives her a gameplay role and not just a story one. The Professor presents three Eggs and lets the player pick one; each holds one of the Kanto starter Pokémon.
The three shells hold the founding trio of the first generation: Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle. Bellis thus replays the ritual of choosing a starter, inside a mobile game.
Hatching has to be earned: you have to complete five battles before the shell opens. The player can then rename the newcomer however they like, and comes away with a three-star sync pair made up of their own character and this Pokémon.
The detail matters, because it fits her research program exactly: what she says she is observing is precisely the bond formed with a Pokémon that hatched just moments earlier. The player doesn't illustrate her theory; they become its case study.

The Characterization Detail That Doesn't Survive Translation
The English version of the game gives her a quirk the French version can't convey: she mixes several languages into her lines, French among them. An "Excusez-moi" keeps cropping up in her speech.
The effect inevitably evaporates in French, where the phrase blends into the rest of the dialogue. It's a piece of characterization that doesn't travel from one language to another: what makes the Professor stand out for English-speaking players becomes invisible in the French version.

In short
Bellis holds a discreet but distinct place among the Professors: no region to map, no Pokédex to fill, just one question — how the bond between a Trainer and their Pokémon takes shape. Pasio, an island out of nowhere, gives her the ideal observation ground, and her Kanto Eggs turn the question into a demonstration the player carries out themselves. A researcher whose experiment is you.
