Professor Cerise: The Researcher Who Took In Ash in Vermilion City

746 words | Reading time: 3 minutes

He is a Pokémon Professor made for TV, with no counterpart in the games. Professor Cerise appears in the Journeys series and opens a lab in Vermilion City where Ash and Goh will come to live. He is no desk-bound researcher: the character was built around a lesson learned in childhood, and his lab works less like a research center than like an open house.

A Researcher Shaped by a Forest Keeper

Kanto is his home region: the future Professor grows up in Vermilion City, and studying Pokémon already takes up his time when he is still just a child.

He spends most of his boyhood days with Grover, who watches over one of the local forests. From that companionship he takes away a principle he will never let go of: no life matters less than another, since each one has something wonderful about it.

The lesson is put to the test soon after. Coming across a Clefairy that was injured and being chased by a Beedrill, the frightened boy still manages to drive the attacker away.

The Lab as a Home Base

His lab serves as Ash and Goh's base throughout Journeys. Lodging comes second: the two boys first join his research, and Cerise then gives them a place to stay, to make their day-to-day life easier.

The site is also home to Cerise Park. Goh lets all his captures live there, except the ones he keeps with him on his core team. The lab is as much a refuge as a research center.

This setup changes how the series works. Ash no longer has a Professor he calls from far away; he has one he comes home to every evening.

A Father and a Husband, a Rarity Here

Cerise is married to Talia and the father of Chloe and Parker. His whole family appears on screen, and it holds a real place in the story.

Calm, approachable, attentive to the people around him: the character easily forgives his family's slip-ups, and he volunteers the moment a problem comes up.

His easygoing nature has clear limits. When his daughter finds herself in danger, with a wild Gengar bearing down on her, he is ready to jump into battle on the spot to protect her.

A wife, two children, a lab where people sleep and a park where his assistant's captures are kept. A forest keeper's lesson holds the whole character together — respect every form of life, even when it scares you.
