A Gym with Three Leaders, and Tepig as Referee
Striaton City opens the Unova League: it's where you earn the region's very first Badge. The Gym Leader post doesn't belong to any one person there, since three brothers share it and each defends a different type. The Trainer's first partner Pokémon determines the opponent, and Cress is the one waiting for players who set out with Tepig.
The trio takes great care over their joint act. With Cilan on the Grass side and Chili on the Fire side, the brothers go by playful nicknames built on their being a trio (in French, "le Trio qui fait le tri" and "la triplette d'Ogoesse"). Their hall is as much a restaurant as a battlefield, and their tea service has become their signature: water is Cress's exclusive domain, and he insists on flawless quality.
His look follows the same dress code as his brothers': black suit, white apron tied at the waist, and a blue bow tie matching his hair and eyes. He speaks calmly, with unfailing politeness, and that restraint is as much a part of his identity as his type specialty.

N's Castle, the Nickname, and the Resignation
What turns his career upside down isn't a defeat — it's an absence. When everything comes to a head at N's Castle, the three brothers aren't there: the alert sent out by Bianca reaches them too late, and they end up the only Unova Gym Leaders to miss the showdown.
The bill comes due two years later. Their numbers don't protect them: they are judged weaker than the rest of the Gym Leaders and saddled with a mocking nickname (in French, "la triplette qui vaut pas tripette," roughly "the triplets who aren't worth a thing"). A defeat at the hands of the Shadow Triad finishes shaking their confidence, and after a long period of soul-searching, the three resign to go train, each on his own until they're back on par with their peers.
In Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, Striaton City therefore has no Gym at all: the building was turned into a full-time restaurant over the past year. You can battle Cress there once a day, with him either as your opponent or as your partner in a Multi Battle against his two brothers. Their training mostly continues alongside the Trainers on Route 2.
Battle formats, from the world tournament to the mobile game
The Pokémon World Tournament gives him back his standing as a competitor: you'll find him in the Unova Leaders Tournament as well as the Water-type Expert Tournament. The roster adjusts to the format — three Pokémon in Single Battles, four as soon as you switch to Double or Rotation Battles, and all six in Triple Battles.
The mobile game long kept him as a non-playable character before adding him for good on October 23, 2025. He wears his canonical outfit there and forms a sync pair with Simipour. His profile there talks less about his battles than about his composure and the flawless water he serves.
The card game gave him a late entrance: his first appearance dates back to the Sword & Shield—Fusion Strike expansion, released in France on November 12, 2021. From one medium to the next, the character doesn't change — the apron, the service and the measured voice come before his type specialty.
In the Anime: The Only One of the Three to Beat Ash
The series introduces him right at the start of the Black & White saga, in the exact setup from the games: a Striaton Gym run by three. On screen, he is credited with only one Pokémon: a Panpour. Ash sends out Pikachu against it, which ought to be enough, since the Electric type beats the Water type on paper.
Yet the battle goes the other way. Panpour wins despite the type disadvantage, and Cress becomes the only one of the three brothers to have beaten Ash. That's what truly sets him apart from Cilan and Chili, far more than the type difference between their three specialties.
He shows up again much later in the same saga, when the Gym is coveted by a Trainer determined to take it over. She challenges the three brothers to a battle with the Gym itself at stake, and it's Cilan who faces her last and puts an end to it. So Cress isn't the one who seals the outcome, but the episode confirms that the trio stands together as one.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Why do you battle Cress instead of his brothers in Striaton City?
Because the Gym is run by three brothers who match their specialty to the player's first partner Pokémon. Cress, the Water-type specialist, is the one waiting for Trainers who set out with Tepig. -
Why is Cress no longer a Gym Leader in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2?
The three brothers missed the events at N's Castle because Bianca didn't warn them in time. Judged weak despite being a trio, then defeated by the Shadow Triad, they resigned and turned the Gym into a restaurant. -
Can you still battle Cress after his resignation?
Yes, once a day at the Striaton City restaurant. He is either the player's opponent or their partner in a Multi Battle against Cilan and Chili. He also takes part in the Pokémon World Tournament. -
Which Pokémon does Cress use in the anime?
A Panpour, the only member of his team identified on screen. It beats Ash's Pikachu despite the type disadvantage, which makes Cress the only one of the three Striaton Gym Leaders to have defeated Ash. -
How many Pokémon does Cress use in the Pokémon World Tournament?
Three in Single Battles, four in Double and Rotation Battles, and all six on his roster in Triple Battles. He takes part in the Unova Leaders Tournament and the Water-type Expert Tournament.
In short
Cress is more than one third of a Gym Leader assigned to the Water type: he is the calm voice of a trio that the games strip of its post before making it earn its place back through training. The Gym-restaurant, the white apron and water chosen down to the last degree of purity give him an identity that holds up without a single Badge to hand out. And the anime gives him the one trophy his two brothers will never have: a victory over Ash at the Striaton Gym.
