Chili: the hot-blooded Fire-type Gym Leader of Striaton City
Share
1443 words | Reading time: 7 minutes
Striaton City has the only Gym where the player's starter Pokémon picks the opponent for them. Chili holds the Gym Leader post there with his two brothers, covering the Fire type, at the gateway to the Unova League. He talks fast, flares up easily, sets the temperature of the tea water to the exact degree — and he belongs to the only trio of Gym Leaders the games have shown hanging up their aprons.

A Three-Way Gym, and a Starter That Picks Your Opponent
Striaton City is the first stop in the Unova League: it's where you earn the region's very first Badge. The post isn't held by one Gym Leader but by three brothers, who adjust their specialty to the Pokémon chosen at the start of the game. Chili, on the Fire side, only takes on Trainers who set out with Snivy.
You can spot him from a distance: red hair and eyes, black suit, red bow tie, white apron tied at the waist. He speaks fast and loud, to the point of losing patience with the drawn-out sentences of his brother Cilan, whose pace is the exact opposite of his own.
The three cultivate their collective image and introduce themselves sometimes as "Triple Trouble," sometimes as the Striaton triplets. Their tea-making ritual is part of their reputation: Cress handles the water, Chili sets it to the ideal temperature, and the Gym is as much a restaurant as a battlefield.

N's Castle, the Nickname, the Resignation
When events come to a head at N's Castle, the three brothers are nowhere to be found. Bianca's warning reaches them too late, and they end up the only Unova Gym Leaders missing that day — a plot detail that will cost them their post.
Two years later, the sanction is public. Despite their numbers, they are judged weak compared to the rest of the Gym Leader ranks, which include Elesa, and a mocking nickname from the French games, "la triplette qui vaut pas tripette" (roughly, "the triplets who aren't worth a thing"), sticks to them. A defeat against the Shadow Triad shakes them for good: all three resign and go off to train separately, with the stated goal of reaching the level of the other Gym Leaders.
So in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, Striaton City no longer has a Gym: the place has become a full-time restaurant. You can find Chili there once a day, sometimes as an opponent, sometimes as a partner in a Double Battle against Cilan and Cress. Their training, meanwhile, mostly takes place with the Trainers on Route 2.
World Tournament, Trading Card, Mobile Game
The Pokémon World Tournament gives him back his status as a competitor, in both the Unova Leaders Tournament and the Type Expert Tournament for Fire types. His roster grows with the format: three Pokémon in Single Battles, four as soon as you switch to Double or Rotation, and all six in Triple Battles.
The mobile game first kept him as a mere non-playable character before adding him for good on October 23, 2025. There he wears his canonical outfit and forms a sync pair with Simisear. His introduction there dwells neither on his Gym nor on his titles, but on two character traits: his explosive temperament and his mastery of water temperature.
On the card side, he arrives well after Cilan, but at the same time as Cress. His first appearance in the Trading Card Game dates from November 12, 2021 in France, in the Sword & Shield—Fusion Strike expansion. From one medium to another, the character doesn't budge: the apron and the service come before the type specialty.
In the Anime: A Pansear and a Gym at Stake
Chili makes his entrance with his brothers in two consecutive episodes of the Black & White series. The only Pokémon he's known to have on screen is a Pansear, sent out against Ash's Tepig in the Gym battle — and beaten. Two later episodes mention two more losses, one against Trip, the other against Burgundy; the first follows the games' logic exactly, since Trip set out with Snivy.
The pair returns later for an episode that puts them to the test twice in a row: Pansear loses to Cilan's Pansage, then wins against Ash's Oshawott. It's also the episode where the Trainer and his Pokémon fall out and go their separate ways, before being found sitting at a table together — the profile notes that Chili loves to eat, just like his Pansear, which has the Ability Gluttony.
His final appearance puts the Gym itself on the line. A Trainer wants to take it over and challenges the three brothers; Cress refuses, so she questions his skills. Chili can't stand the insinuations and takes up the challenge in his place, with the Gym as the stakes. The character is summed up pretty well by this scene: he's the brother who steps up when someone messes with the family.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Why don't you always face Chili in Striaton City?
Because the Gym is run by three brothers who adapt their specialty to the player's starter Pokémon. Chili, the Fire-type specialist, is the one waiting for Trainers who set out with Snivy. -
Why is Chili no longer a Gym Leader in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2?
The three brothers missed the events at N's Castle because Bianca didn't warn them in time. Judged weak, then beaten by the Shadow Triad, they resigned and turned the Gym into a restaurant. -
Can you still battle Chili after his resignation?
Yes, once a day at the Striaton City restaurant. He's either the player's opponent or their partner in a Double Battle against Cilan and Cress. He also takes part in the Pokémon World Tournament. -
Which Pokémon does Chili have in the anime?
A Pansear, the only member of his team identified on screen. It loses to Ash's Tepig in the Gym battle, then to Cilan's Pansage, before winning against Ash's Oshawott. -
How many Pokémon does Chili use in the Pokémon World Tournament?
Three in Single Battles, four in Double and Rotation Battles, and all six of his roster in Triple Battles. He takes part in the Unova Leaders Tournament and the Type Expert Tournament for Fire types.
In short
Chili isn't just the Fire third of a post shared three ways: he's the temperament of the group, the one who speeds up when his brothers slow down and who fires back when they're provoked. The games put him through the opposite of a Gym Leader career — the guilty absence, the humiliating nickname, the resignation, then training to make a comeback. Between services, he's still the man who sets the water temperature to the exact degree.
