Dana: The Chatelaine Who Guards the Exit of Triple Battles

1194 words | Reading time: 5 minutes

Four sisters run the Battle Maison, and Dana guards the door to the three-on-three format. A Battle Chatelaine just like Evelyn, Nita and Morgan, she's one of the two middle sisters along with Evelyn, between the eldest, Morgan, and the youngest, Nita. What makes her unique is less what she sends out than where you find her: at the end of the win streaks, when the counter runs its course.

Four sisters, one title

The Battle Maison isn't run by a single manager but by a set of sisters. Evelyn, Nita, Morgan and Dana all hold the title of Battle Chatelaine there, and it's the battle format the player picks that decides which one steps up to face them.

Dana is presented as the second of these Chatelaines, and Triple Battles are her responsibility. The split is anything but decorative: it acts as a switchboard, making each sister the point of contact for a specific mode rather than an interchangeable variant.

The sisters' names all share a common theme. Dana's Japanese name, ラジュルネ (Lajournée), openly plays on "la journée" (French for "the day"); in English, she's called Dana, while her sisters become Nita, Evelyn and Morgan.

Twentieth battle, then fiftieth

The Battle Maison is strictly identical in Pokémon X and Y and in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. So Dana's team doesn't change from one version to the other: whatever a player learns about her in one carries over completely to the other, with no adjustment needed.

She steps in at the end of the Triple Battle challenge, in the twentieth consecutive battle. The position isn't merely honorary: until you've beaten her at least once in this challenge, the Super Triple Battle challenge stays closed. She is, quite literally, the one who opens the next door.

The Super Triple challenge closes the same way, in the fiftieth consecutive battle, and once again on her. So Dana plays the same role twice: the end-of-run lock in the first challenge, then the last obstacle in the challenge she herself unlocked.

Three challenges, a fixed team except in Multi

You face her in three settings: the Triple Battle challenge, the Super Triple Battle challenge and the Multi Battle challenge, alone or with a friend. The context changes but the opponent stays the same, which gives this character an unusually broad presence for a facility manager.

In the Multi Battle challenge, she doesn't fight on her own: she teams up with Evelyn against the computer, or with Nita when a friend joins the game. Two configurations for the same encounter, chosen by how you approach the challenge rather than by chance.

Chance, for its part, comes into play elsewhere. Her two Pokémon are drawn at random from the ones she normally uses on her own, but that draw only applies to the Multi Battle challenge: in both the Triple Battle and Super Triple Battle challenges, Dana fields a fixed team of six Pokémon, items and moves included.

The mobile game and the cards

The mobile game added her on August 28, 2023, in her standard outfit. There she forms a sync pair with Regice, obtained by exchanging a BP Sync Pair Super Voucher — a species she already fields in her Super Triple Battle team.

Her description there spells out what the main games left implicit: the second of the Chatelaines, feisty by nature but high-and-mighty as soon as she battles under that title, and in charge of Triple Battles at the Battle Maison. With her, the role stands in for a personality.

On the card side, her first appearance dates back to the Sun & Moon—Team Up expansion, released in France on February 1, 2019. Like other facility heads — Emmet or Ingo — she exists first and foremost through the role she holds.

In short

Dana is an example of a kind of character the games create without ever telling their story: she has no story arc, only a place in a structure. That place, however, is a strategic one — twentieth battle, then fiftieth, with a door to open in between. An opponent defined far more by her position than by her roster.
