Acerola: Alola's royal heir who made Ghosts her specialty

1282 words | Reading time: 6 minutes

She descends from a royal family and wears worn-out clothes. Acerola is a Trial Captain on Ula'ula Island and a member of Alola's Elite Four, and her specialty comes down to one word: the Ghost type. Introduced in Sun and Moon, she combines the role of examiner, a seat at the top of the regional League and a lineage that goes back to the archipelago's ancient rulers.

Trial Captain, then Elite Four member

Alola does without Gyms: the player's journey is called the island challenge, and those who oversee it hold the title of Trial Captain. A Captain isn't a titleholder to be unseated, but a former challenger — a Trainer who completed the same circuit a few years earlier and then runs the stage they once went through.

Acerola holds that post on Ula'ula Island, specializing in the Ghost type. She makes no secret of it: she thinks ghosts are cute, whatever the species. She can be disconcerting at first, but her profile stresses the very opposite of an aloof eccentric: a dependable ally, quick to come to the aid of anyone in danger.

Her path doesn't end with the trial. Acerola also sits on Alola's Elite Four, the final step before the title of Champion, which makes her one of the rare characters in the region to wear both hats. Her colleague Mallow, the Grass-type Captain, has for her part stayed confined to her trial.

A Royal Lineage Under Threadbare Clothes

The game sets up the contrast right away: her clothes are worn, and yet she descends from Alola's royal family. Her profile in the mobile game bluntly calls her the heiress of the region's ancient dynasty.

This ancestry isn't just a line in a biography. Her father keeps old books about the legends of Alola, a collection held at the Malie Library in Malie City, the main city on her island. The lineage is thus anchored in something tangible in the game world: books, a place, a written memory of the archipelago.

Then there's the most delightful detail in her file. Acerola quickly becomes friends with Lillie, whom she gets into the habit of calling "princess." Yet it's Acerola who has royal blood, not the girl she gives the title to — a reversal the game leaves the player to notice.

Sync Pairs and Outfits in the Mobile Game

Acerola is part of the original cast: she was added at the mobile game's launch. In her canon outfit, she forms a default sync pair with a Palossand, plus an alternate sync pair with a Banette — the latter only unlocks once you reach the maximum friendship level with her at the Trainer Lodge.

The seasonal versions take the theme further. For Halloween, she dresses up as a Mimikyu, with a partner of the same species, and goes trick-or-treating in a town decorated for the occasion. Her Sygna Suit look is a complete change of tone: she patrols the forests of Pasio alongside Tapu Bulu, described as fickle.

Her 2024 summer outfit sends her on a treasure hunt, again on Pasio, with a Jellicent that Lana entrusted to her. The same episode shows her encouraging Gardenia, who is afraid of ghosts, to team up with a Dhelmise: the Ghost-type specialist plays guide to a Trainer terrified of the whole type.

In the Anime: A Kidnapping, Then a Gengar

Her first appearance in the Sun & Moon series gets off on the wrong foot: she gets kidnapped by a Ghost-type Pokémon, a Gengar that eventually becomes her own. The series later shows it using the move Thief and protected by its Cursed Body Ability. Along the way, Acerola hands a Mimikium Z to Jessie.

Starting with the very next episode, she accompanies Ash on his adventures on Ula'ula Island and takes him to train with the island's guardian deity, Tapu Bulu. She then disappears for a long run of episodes before reuniting with the group, in a sequence where Ghost-type Pokémon have fun playing tricks on them.

She finally takes part in the Pokémon League. Having qualified through the Battle Royal, she is knocked out in the round of 16 by an Alolan Marowak. The card game had already welcomed her: her first card was released in France on August 19, 2017, in the Sun & Moon—Burning Shadows expansion.

In short

Acerola holds a rare position in Alola's setup: she is both the examiner of a trial and one of the League's final obstacles, whereas most Captains stop at their island. The rest of her portrait comes down to a contrast: royal descent, a library of legends at her father's, and threadbare clothes that give none of it away. An heiress who calls other people "princess."
