Proton: The Rocket Executive the Remakes Invented
Share
1175 words | Reading time: 5 minutes
He describes himself as the scariest and cruelest figure in his organization. Proton is a Team Rocket Executive in Johto, and the player first runs into him while he is leading an operation in the Slowpoke Well, in Azalea Town. What sets him apart lies elsewhere: he did not exist in the original versions, and it took a remake to give him a name and an identity of his own.

The Boss of the Slowpoke Well
Proton serves the branch of Team Rocket active in Johto, with the rank of Executive. His first clash with the player puts him in charge of an operation in the Slowpoke Well, beneath Azalea Town: a field mission, early in the journey.
You meet him again much later in the adventure, when the organization takes over the Radio Tower in Goldenrod City. These two encounters frame his entire presence in the story and take the character from a local operation to a region-wide takeover.
The surprising detail is when he actually got his identity. His name was only revealed in the HeartGold and SoulSilver remakes, two generations after the events he is supposed to have led.
An Antagonist Added After the Fact
In Gold, Silver and Crystal, Proton simply doesn't exist. The one commanding the Slowpoke Well team there is just a nameless Grunt, and nothing ties him to the boss you face much later at the Radio Tower.
The remakes merge these two roles into a single identity. Retroactive continuity gives him the overworld look of the Rocket Grunt, along with the battle sprites of the organization's Executive and Grunt: he inherits existing designs, without anyone needing to draw new ones.
The process says a lot about how a remake works. Remaking a game isn't just about redoing its graphics: it also lets you stitch a story back together, turning two unrelated extras into an identifiable opponent with a rank and a reputation.
Feared on Principle, Followed by Conviction
Proton makes no secret of the image he cultivates: he presents himself as the most fearsome and ruthless member of Team Rocket. Intimidation is as much a part of his kit as his Pokémon.
Yet this open brutality doesn't cut him off from his troops. During the Radio Tower occupation, a female Grunt openly admits how much she admires him: the character is obeyed as much as he is feared, which is far from the rule among the organization's officers.
The official profile in the mobile game points the same way. It highlights a reputation for cruelty, complete devotion to the organization and a genuine taste for missions, tempered by polite manners and good looks that make him quite popular with the female members.

Cards, a Mobile Game and a Confusing Name
The franchise's mobile game already used him as a non-playable figure before adding him for good on September 6, 2023. There he keeps his canonical outfit and teams up with just one partner — a Golbat — whereas his battles in HeartGold and SoulSilver give him a Zubat and a Koffing in the Slowpoke Well, then a Golbat and a Weezing at the Radio Tower.
The card game welcomed him earlier: his first card arrived with the HS—Undaunted expansion, released in France on November 6, 2010. On the other hand, you had to wait for Destined Rivals, a Scarlet & Violet expansion released on May 30, 2025, to see cards of Pokémon presented as his own.
That leaves his name: in French he is called Lance, a play on lance-roquettes, the French word for rocket launcher. The English version calls him Proton, and that distinction matters: in English, "Lance" refers to a completely different character, Lance, the dragon master.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Who is Proton in Pokémon?
A Team Rocket Executive stationed in the Johto region. He leads the Slowpoke Well operation, then reappears during the takeover of the Radio Tower in Goldenrod City. -
Where do you battle Proton?
First in the Slowpoke Well, beneath Azalea Town, early in the adventure. Then again much later, during the occupation of the Radio Tower in Goldenrod City. -
Why is Proton missing from Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal?
Because he wasn't designed for them. The leader at the Slowpoke Well was just an anonymous Grunt there, with no connection to the boss of the Radio Tower. The remakes merged the two roles into one named character. -
Are Proton and Lance the same character?
No, and the confusion comes from translation. The Rocket Executive is called Lance in French and Japanese, while in English the name Lance belongs to the dragon master (known as Peter in French). They are two unrelated characters. -
Which Pokémon does Proton use?
In HeartGold and SoulSilver, he sends out a Zubat and a Koffing in the Slowpoke Well, then a Golbat and a Weezing at the Radio Tower; Golbat is also his partner in the franchise's mobile game.
In short
Proton is a textbook case of how a remake reworks a story. Two anonymous figures from the original versions were recast as a named Executive, with a rank, a reputation and a story arc. The result spans only a few scenes, but it's enough to establish an antagonist admired by his own grunts — and whose original name, Lance, still gets him confused with a League Champion.
