A criminal organization born in Kanto

In the games Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow, Team Rocket is a full-blown mafia operating across the Kanto region. Its members, recognizable by the large red "R" on their black uniform, steal, capture and resell Pokémon for money and power.

👕 The black uniform stamped with the big red "R" is still the outfit of Kanto's grunts; in your own closet, our Pokémon clothing dress you without enlisting you in any mafia.

You keep running into their grunts: in the hideout beneath the Game Corner in Celadon City, in the sinister Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town, or at Silph Co. in Saffron City, which they take over. They are recurring antagonists who set the rhythm of the entire main adventure.

Far from being throwaway enemies, they give the first game a dramatic tension rare for the time. Their misdeeds, all the way to the tragedy of the Lavender Town Marowak killed protecting her young, anchor the franchise in a world where not everything is rosy. That contrast is what marked generations of players. Giovanni, Jessie, James and the other figures of the franchise all have their entry in our Pokémon character directory.

Giovanni, the boss and his famous twist

At the head of the organization stands Giovanni, a ruthless businessman in a dark suit who pulls the strings from the shadows. He builds his teams around Ground-type Pokémon and dreams of extending his empire far beyond Kanto.

But Giovanni is hiding a secret that left its mark on video game history. He is also the eighth Gym Leader, the one in Viridian City, the very last Gym you can challenge. This unexpected dual role remains one of the most famous twists in the franchise.

💰 Giovanni dreams of expanding his empire as a ruthless businessman; yours can start out more honestly, one coin at a time, in one of our Pokémon piggy banks.

After you defeat him, Giovanni hands over the Earth Badge, disbands Team Rocket and retires to study Pokémon seriously, or so he says. That ending makes him an antagonist both larger than life and surprisingly human, one you can find alongside our figures of the franchise's iconic characters.

Jessie, James and Meowth: the anime trio

In the anime, Team Rocket takes on a completely different face. It comes down to an unforgettable comic trio: Jessie, James and a Meowth unlike any other, endlessly chasing the Pikachu of Ash Ketchum episode after episode.

Jessie, bossy and explosive, is the leader of the group, while James, gentler and more elegant, takes her outbursts with resignation. A far cry from the anonymous grunts of the games, these two are endearing characters whose misadventures you follow with real affection.

Their schemes, as ingenious as they are doomed, almost always end with their spectacular blast-off into the sky. That running gag, repeated without ever wearing thin, has made them the favorite antiheroes of millions of viewers around the world.

Meowth, the Pokémon who talks

The trio's greatest quirk is Meowth, a cat Pokémon able to speak fluent human language. In the whole Pokémon world, where creatures normally say nothing but their own name, that ability is extremely rare.

Meowth learned to speak and to walk on two legs out of love, a touching story that explains why he refuses to evolve into Persian. Clever and talkative, he often acts as the group's brains and as a translator between Pokémon and humans.

Jessie, for her part, is famous for her Wobbuffet, a blue Pokémon that pops out at any moment shouting its own name, adding to the group's comedy. That star Meowth now comes as super-soft plushies perfect for fans.

Team Rocket's iconic motto

You can't talk about the trio without quoting its famous catchphrase (the "motto"), recited with flair every time they show up. That theatrical tirade announces their misdeeds in grandiose fashion before every capture attempt.

The best-known French version opens with a "Nous sommes de retour !" delivered by Jessie and immediately completed by James: "Pour vous jouer un mauvais tour !" (the English dub turns it into "Prepare for trouble!" and "Make it double!"). That verbal ritual, capped by Meowth's own line, has become a true symbol of the franchise.

Season after season, the motto reinvents itself, dresses up and parodies itself, but its spirit stays intact. It perfectly illustrates what sets the anime apart from the games: where Giovanni inspires fear, Jessie, James and Meowth cultivate self-mockery and good cheer.
