Billy: The Guitar That Led the Go-Rock Quads

1624 words | Reading time: 8 minutes

His electric guitar doubles as his weapon. Billy is the eldest of Gordor's four children and the leader of the Go-Rock Quads, the rock band that serves as the public face of Fiore's criminal gang. He dreams up the dirty tricks, carries them out more brutally than his siblings, and exits the stage by blowing up the family hideout.

Four Musicians, One Family, One Organization

Billy shares the bill with Garret, Tiffany and Clyde: together, the four of them make up both a rock band and the Go-Rock Quads, two names for the same lineup. Their father is none other than Gordor, the leader of the Go-Rock Squad: so the Quads are as much a set of siblings as a rung in the organization.

His instrument is the electric guitar, and that detail already tells you how he fights. He is the eldest and the leader of the four: he's the one who calls the shots and makes the decisions, and the game credits him with brains.

That cool head has a flip side. Billy loses his temper much faster than his brothers and sister, and he attacks with more power: the band's leader is also its most hot-headed member.

The Challenge of Fire: A Legend Turned Against the Rangers

Before the showdown, he crosses paths with the Rangers without battling, just to mock them. In Krokka Tunnel, he comes running to see a Summerland Ranger busy clearing the passage and asks, laughing, what they did wrong to earn such a chore.

The real scheme plays out at the Jungle Relic, home to a legend: if all four challenges are completed, disaster will strike Fiore. The Go-Rock Squad isn't trying to prevent it, it wants it to happen — and Billy takes credit for the idea of using two Rangers who had come to take on the challenges.

So he posts himself at the Challenge of Fire and points them to a Charizard in agony, urging them to capture it to calm it down. The confession comes once the job is done: he had tried to capture it himself, but the group's device wasn't ready yet. He congratulates the Rangers, wonders aloud what has become of the Entei statue, and leaves.

The Go-Rock Squad Base: A Guitar in Place of a Styler

In the first Pokémon Ranger, you only face him deep inside the Go-Rock Squad Base, once his brothers and sister have already fallen. He's the only member of the Quads the game has you battle just once, and he makes no secret of his motive: avenging Clyde, Garret and Tiffany, the latter beaten twice.

His team is a complete evolutionary line: Larvitar, Pupitar and Tyranitar. He commands them not with a Capture Styler but with his electric guitar, which acts as a Super Styler here: the stage instrument and the control device are one and the same.

He also lays all his cards on the table before attacking. The Super Styler built by Professor Hastings wasn't borrowed, it was stolen, and the Quads have no intention of handing it back without a fight, even though the Power Styler is already finished; as for the boss, he isn't hiding anywhere: he's working on his final project in Fiore Temple.

After the Defeat: Self-Destruct and Leaving the Family

Once beaten, he plays it straight for a minute. He reveals that the Super Styler is sitting in a lab inside the base, invites the Rangers to search for it and bring it back to its inventor — then triggers the hideout's self-destruct system.

That doesn't mean he casts himself as the good guy. He openly admits the Quads are sore losers, and owns up to refusing to let anyone get in the way of his father's plans — a word he immediately corrects to "boss" — in the name of what he calls the law of the quadruplets.

The explosion closes the book on their outlaw days. Billy knows the boss will never forgive them for destroying the base, considers their duty done even at the cost of being cast out of the family, and announces that the four of them will start over from scratch.

Pueltown: The Switch to Theatrical Rock

The Quads return in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, this time on the right side of the law. The four are due to play a concert in Pueltown for Altru's seventieth anniversary, and the player can catch them in the middle of a rehearsal.

Billy sums up the turnaround himself: the outlaw quartet has become a theatrical rock act, and their criminal past now only explains why everyone already knows them.

The preparations, however, turn into a crisis. Clyde refuses to sing the lyrics sent over for the ceremony and walks out on the band; Billy points out that a concert with three members is impossible, rehearsals only resume once the angry brother comes back, and the four end up quietly rewriting the lyrics.

Oblivia: A Lost Riolu and a Ukulele-Playing Pichu

In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it's Tiffany who sends the player to find her brothers before a small concert in Oblivia. The invitation to play there comes from Professor Hastings, and Billy takes the opportunity to look for a theme for their opening song among the region's ruins.

The scouting trip turns into a rescue. The Quads take in a Riolu brought there by people in armor and decide to take it back to the Aqua Resort; a Lucario first mistakes them for the culprits, until a child sets the record straight and the two Pokémon say goodbye.

The four had given themselves a mission: track down the most extraordinary thing in Oblivia. Ukulele Pichu and its ukulele win the vote: energetic, cheerful, found nowhere else and tied to a Ranger. Billy goes so far as to say he would gladly have recruited it, before introducing it on stage as the concert's special guest.

In short

Billy is the only member of the Quads that the first Pokémon Ranger has you face just once, and yet he's the one who writes the band's ending: it's his hand that triggers the self-destruct and costs the siblings their place in the family. The next two games show the aftermath — a quartet that has become a real band, rehearsing in Pueltown and roaming Oblivia in search of a ukulele-playing Pichu. The guitar hasn't changed; only what it's used for has.
