Naveen: the Team MZ stylist you have to beat to get him talking
Share
1225 words | Reading time: 6 minutes
You have to beat him to get a conversation out of him. Naveen lives in Lumiose City, sews clothes and has no desire whatsoever for anyone to take an interest in him. Yet he belongs to Team MZ, and ends up among the player's friends in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. The whole character lives in that mismatch: a loner caught up in a group effort, whose social front door is a Pokémon battle.

Studio Space in Exchange for Membership
Naveen comes from Kalos and has settled in Lumiose City, the region's big city. There, he works as an aspiring fashion designer with a growing reputation — his craft, not the title of Trainer, is what keeps him busy day to day.
So his joining Team MZ isn't a matter of calling. The group has taken it upon itself to watch over the city; Naveen joins in exchange for studio space. The trade-off is material, and the story doesn't try to pass it off as anything else.
The deal draws him in further than he ever imagined. Quasartico Inc. entrusts Team MZ with an investigation into Rogue Mega Evolution, a troubling phenomenon breaking out in the streets of Lumiose City, and the designer finds himself caught up in an affair that goes far beyond his workshop.
The Introvert You Unlock Through Battle
The portrait the game paints is that of a withdrawn young man. He isn't interested in other people, and he doesn't like them taking an interest in him either, which makes him come across as unpleasant when what he's really after is peace and quiet.
That reserve produces an unusual game mechanic. Naveen isn't particularly fond of battling, and yet the player regularly has to battle him before he'll agree to answer: here, a battle isn't a competition but a conversational pass.
His grievances with his own teammates point the same way. He doesn't take kindly to being left out of the meetings held at Hotel Z, especially since he isn't always there: he goes away to visit his family, a younger sister and a grandmother.
A Day-One Fan of a Streamer
The character does have one passion, and it's total: Canari, the Lumiose City streamer. He has followed her since her very first streams and remembers the smallest details of her life, to the point of being something of an expert among her fans.
That level of attention comes with its pet peeves. He can't stand hearing someone garble his idol's name (into "Carina," in the French version) — a tiny detail, but one that measures exactly how much room the streamer takes up in his life.
His passion and his craft end up meeting: he wants to make her an outfit himself, one she would wear on stream. And his devotion comes before everything else, since he never misses a stream, even when Team MZ is in the middle of a meeting — which explains the group's friction better than his bad moods alone.

Premier Balls, Scrafty and the Infinite Z-A Royale
On the Trainer side, two presentation details already say the essentials. His Pokémon travel in Premier Balls, a choice of container that's anything but trivial for a character who pays attention to how things look — our guide to the types of Poké Balls breaks down what each one implies.
The second is his favorite Pokémon: Scrafty. It's his go-to Pokémon, but not the only one he's known for: his teams also feature Spinarak and later Ariados, Sableye, Scraggy, Krookodile, Aegislash and, once Mega Dimension is complete, Toxtricity, with a Scrafty that can Mega Evolve.
That's because you cross paths with him again in competition. He's the opponent in the eighth reward match of the Infinite Z-A Royale, then joins the pool of possible opponents from the twenty-first on: he isn't a milestone you clear once and for all, but a figure who keeps coming back in the rotation.

In short
Naveen is a supporting character built on a useful contradiction: he wants neither to talk to people nor to battle, and the game makes him do both. The initial compromise — studio space in exchange for membership — places him in a group whose drive he doesn't share, and his one enthusiasm goes to a streamer he watches from afar. A loner who shows up in spite of himself in an investigation, in the Z-A Royale and, since March 2026, on a trading card.
