1578 words | Reading time: 7 minutes
He doesn't set off from home: he starts school. Florian is the male avatar of Scarlet and Violet, and the ninth generation traded the coming-of-age journey for school enrollment. His adventure takes the form of an independent study project, complete with a director, a class and a student file. All three of the game's main storylines are open to him at the same time, in no set order.

The Male Avatar, and the Half of the Cast That Disappears
The player chooses their character at the start of Scarlet and Violet, and that choice is exclusive: picking Florian simply erases Juliana from the story. The two never cross paths in the same playthrough.
He doesn't come with a set name when the game begins: since the sixth generation, the protagonist arrives with no fixed identity and the player chooses both his name and his appearance. "Florian" is the name used in official material, such as screenshots and trailers, which needed some way to refer to this Trainer.
The choice of name isn't arbitrary. In the European promotional videos, it comes from the Spanish flor, "flower", echoing the region's Iberian inspiration. Asian languages took another route, that of spring: haru in Japanese.

An Adventure That Begins With Enrollment
Florian has just moved to Cabo Poco with his mother when Clavell, the academy director, informs him that he's been admitted to Paldea's academy. His neighbor Nemona, who heads the student council, takes it upon herself to teach him the basics of training before the first day of class even begins.
The road to Mesagoza, where the school stands, takes a bad turn: a pack of Houndour chases him, and it's an unknown Pokémon that gets him out of trouble — Koraidon in one version, Miraidon in the other. Right after that, he meets Arven, whose parent is the region's Pokémon Professor, Sada or Turo depending on the version.
His arrival on campus is no calmer: he has to stand up for Penny against members of Team Star, which gives Nemona a chance to introduce him to Terastallization. Next come Jacq's class, installing the Pokédex app and signing up for the Treasure Hunt, the independent study project run by the director.

Three Storylines Open at Once
The Treasure Hunt unfolds along three simultaneous threads: earning Champion Rank by working through the Gyms and then the Paldea League, finding the Herba Mystica guarded by the Titan Pokémon, and bringing down Team Star. Nothing requires you to finish one before starting the next.
Like every beginner in the region, he picks his first partner from Sprigatito for the Grass type, Fuecoco for Fire and Quaxly for Water. The rest of the team then comes together over the course of the three quests, with no Pokémon forced on him by the story.
The Legendary, for its part, joins the group very early, on Poco Path, but it first serves as a means of transportation and only battles in the very last act. This late handoff, in the final storyline "The Way Home," makes Florian and his female counterpart the first canon protagonists able to field seven Pokémon.

A Uniform That Depends on the Version, Not on Gender
It's a first in the main series: the base outfit is exactly the same for the boy and the girl, but differs from one version to the other. The core never changes (sun hat, short-sleeved polo bearing the school crest, tie, shorts with elastic bands, knee-high socks, Velcro shoes and backpack); only the colors do.
At Naranja Academy, the hat is white lined with blue, the shirt pale blue, the tie and shorts orange, the socks white trimmed with orange, and the bag black. Uva Academy uses the same pattern in light gray, purplish blue and yellow, with brown shoes and a brown bag. By default, Florian has light skin, brown hair cut with bangs, and brown eyes.
The game's DLC gives him two extra wardrobes: in Kitakami, hair swept up and a green jinbei with red stitching, decorated with Fezandipiti, Okidogi and Munkidori motifs, worn with wooden geta with red straps; at Blueberry Academy, a white sweatshirt trimmed in gray, indigo sweatpants and a glove that matches his scarf. Uniforms aside, the character's appearance remains fully customizable.
Beyond the Main Game: Cards, Mobile and Continuity Errors
The trading card game added him late: his first card came out in France on January 17, 2025, in the Prismatic Evolutions expansion. Two promotional artworks for the game's DLC actually contradict his official profile: in the one for The Teal Mask, his hair is black rather than brown, and in the one for The Indigo Disk, he wears the uniform of Juliana.
The mobile game recruited him on February 19, 2025, with several outfits and five partners: Miraidon as his default partner, with Lechonk and Fuecoco as variants, Teal Mask Ogerpon for his anniversary outfit, and a Yanmega that can Terastallize into the Bug type when he wears his jinbei. The game's descriptions present him as deeply curious, drawn to anything with a hint of mystery.
Two final details complete the picture. His role as a student links him to the Schoolboy and Schoolgirl Trainers found throughout the series, and his student file bears a number visible in-game, 805C393. Finally, his Japanese name is also that of the hero of a special episode of the Journeys series, which aired five weeks after the game's release.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Who is Florian in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?
He's the male avatar offered at the start of the game. A newcomer to Cabo Poco, he enrolls at Paldea's academy and takes part in the Treasure Hunt, the independent study project that frames the whole adventure. -
How is he different from Juliana?
They're the two possible avatars, and they're mutually exclusive: choosing Florian removes Juliana from the story. Their starting outfit is identical, a first for the series; it's the game version, not the character's gender, that changes the uniform's colors. -
Which starter Pokémon does Florian get?
Sprigatito, Fuecoco or Quaxly, as the player chooses. He then obtains Koraidon or Miraidon on Poco Path, depending on the version. -
Does Koraidon or Miraidon battle during the adventure?
Not until the end. The Legendary first serves as a mount and only reveals its battle potential in the final storyline, "The Way Home," where it takes over from the team. -
Can you customize his appearance?
Yes, extensively. The protagonist has had no set name or look since the sixth generation. Only the school uniforms stay fixed, and the game adds two more with its DLC.
In short
Florian is the most closely supervised protagonist in the series: a home, a mother, a director, a class and a student number. Open-world travel gains a narrative structure that previous generations lacked, since its three storylines run side by side rather than in single file. That leaves the paradox that sums him up rather well: he crosses Paldea on the back of a Legendary that refuses to fight until the very last chapter.
