Celestic Town Elder: Keeper of Sinnoh's Ancient Legends
Share
1126 words | Reading time: 5 minutes
She has no Gym, no team, not a single battle to her name. The Elder of Celestic Town plays a role Sinnoh entrusts to no one else: remembering. She's the one who puts words to her village's ruins, the one who explains why three Pokémon watch over the region's balance — and, incidentally, the one who happens to be Cynthia's grandmother.

The Memory of Celestic Town
The character has no official title: she is simply the elder of her village, Celestic Town. Her specialty is Sinnoh's ancient legends, and the game relies on her whenever it needs to explain the stories told across the region since long before the player arrived.
She even invites the player to visit the Celestic Ruins, then shares the memory they hold. Three Pokémon — Uxie, Mesprit and Azelf — existed to counterbalance the power of a deity and keep the region in balance.
Her granddaughter is none other than Cynthia, and it's precisely through her that the player reaches the old lady. The family tie is no mere ornament: it drives the entire sequence the game builds around the village.
🔮 The guardians of balance have their own shelf: browse the section Legendaries.
The Old Charm, a Bomb and a Grunt
The meeting comes about through an item. Cynthia is entrusted with an Old Charm, then asks the hero to bring it to her own grandmother: a seemingly harmless errand that mainly serves as an excuse to send them to Celestic Town.
The village is anything but peaceful when you arrive. A Grunt from Team Galactic is threatening to set off a bomb there, and the elder simply watches him — not without remarking that if she were twenty years younger, her Pokémon would have taught him some manners.
Once the player has dealt with the matter, she repays her debt in knowledge and then in equipment: she hands over HM03 Surf, which Cynthia no longer uses. In Pokémon Platinum, the scene is identical but for one detail — you first have to battle Cyrus, who is convinced he is never wrong.
The Post-League Service: The Missing Legendary
Her usefulness doesn't end with the story. In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, talking to her again once the League is beaten triggers a favor no other character grants: she shows the player the Legendary Pokémon missing from their version.
The gesture is anything but symbolic, since it leaves a real trace in the Pokédex: Dialga is registered for Pearl owners, Palkia for Diamond owners. The missing entry fills in without a battle and without a trade between cartridges.
That's what unlocks what comes next. Once complete, the count of Pokémon seen earns you the National Pokédex, handed over by Professor Rowan in Sandgem Town. A village conversation therefore gates a key step of the entire post-League game.
Professor Carolina, Her Counterpart in the Anime
The anime doesn't take the character over as is. It gives her a name, a title and a profession in the form of Professor Carolina, who counts among the Pokémon Professors as a specialist in Sinnoh's legends.
The rest of the profile holds up: she runs the Celestic Town Historical Research Center and is still Cynthia's grandmother. Her first appearances come during Team Galactic's offensive, in the Diamond & Pearl series, before a later return in her laboratory.
Later episodes show her in the field rather than behind a display case. She arrives on Iron Island with a team of scientists to study its ruins, and she is later seen with her assistants, observing the phenomena stirring up Sinnoh's lakes.
