Courtney: the Team Magma admin who analyzes instead of overreacting
Share
1586 words | Reading time: 7 minutes
She's the one who watches while everyone else gets fired up. Courtney works for Team Magma under Maxie, in the Hoenn region, and her official title — Magma Admin — says plenty about her place as an enforcer. Above all, she's a textbook case of a character whose role shifts with the version: depending on which cartridge you're holding, she's either a silent background figure or the opponent who keeps coming back from one end of the story to the other.

A Role That Depends Entirely on the Version
Few supporting characters change this much from one version to the next. In Sapphire, Courtney is reduced to a cameo in the Seafloor Cavern, with no bearing whatsoever on the plot: she's there, you move on.
Ruby gives her the exact opposite role. There, she keeps stepping into the player's path every time they get in the way of one of the organization's plans, which puts her among the recurring obstacles rather than the scenery.
Emerald makes a third call, a different one. She stands in the Seafloor Cavern alongside Maxie and Tabitha, right after the defeat of Archie, but the player doesn't battle her a single time in the entire game — present on screen, absent from the gameplay.
The Remakes Make Her an Opponent From Start to Finish
Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire start by remaking her from top to bottom: Courtney gets a completely updated look, and above all a place in the story that no earlier version had given her.
Depending on the version, the first showdown doesn't happen in the same place. In the original Ruby, she storms the Weather Institute on Route 119 with a group of grunts to seize a Castform, then has to be defeated in the Seafloor Cavern, where Team Magma is trying to take control of Groudon.
In the remakes, the starting point is a Multi Battle on Southern Island, where she backs up a grunt against the player and Steven Stone while trying to capture Latios and take its Mega Stone; Mt. Pyre follows, then the Team Magma Hideout. The Delta Episode puts her in your way twice more: in Petalburg City, where she's after Wally's Key Stone, and then at the Mossdeep Space Center.
A Former Scientist, and a Camerupt That Follows Her From Ruby to the Mobile Game
The profile written for the mobile game is the most explicit source we have on her. It describes her as a short former scientist with an air of strangeness about her, who puts her expertise to work for Team Magma.
One trait comes up there, and it sheds light on everything else: as soon as something catches her interest, she can't stop herself from picking it apart from every angle. So the coldness people see in her isn't indifference; it's a way of approaching the world through analysis, where her colleagues just charge ahead.
She arrived in that mobile game on August 5, 2022. She wears her outfit from the remakes and forms a sync pair with a Camerupt, capable of Mega Evolving into Mega Camerupt — the species that has followed her since Ruby, where she already fielded a Numel and a Mightyena; the manga adds a Vulpix that evolved into Ninetales and a Swellow.

The Vision of Primal Groudon in Pokémon Generations
The short-form format of Pokémon Generations gives her an entire scene, and it's probably her best. She was supposed to follow Maxie and the rest of the crew to the Seafloor Cavern, but her boss leaves her behind to deal with Brendan.
Left alone, she's struck by a vision. In it, she sees Primal Groudon turn on Maxie and on Team Magma itself: the culmination of the organization's plan appears to her as a disaster before the plan has even come to fruition.
The intruder shows up right after, his Sceptile at his side. So the sequence pits the one who glimpsed the catastrophe against the one who has come to prevent it, which gives this supporting character a dramatic weight the games never give her.

The Three Fires: Berries, a Rockslide, Then a Return
The manga adaptation puts her in a trio, the Three Fires, alongside Tabitha and Blaise. There, she openly admits she only joined Team Magma for her own amusement, and because she loves Contests: her motive has nothing to do with ideology.
Her specialty is Berries, and she uses them as weapons. During her battle on the Abandoned Ship, her gloves are soaked in Tamato Berry juice, enough to blind anyone standing in front of her.
Her arc ends twice. After the clash between Groudon and Kyogre, Archie's Tentacruel — which had gone over to Maxie's side — triggers a rockslide that traps her, and she is crushed to death under the rocks. Yet she comes back: a Celebi that Ruby caught in Johto brings her back to life, just as it brings back Norman and Steven Stone.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Who is Courtney in Pokémon?
A Team Magma Admin — the official title on her profile — who carries out Maxie's orders in Hoenn. Her importance changes completely from one version to the next: a mere cameo in Sapphire, a recurring opponent in Ruby, never battled in Emerald. -
Where do you battle Courtney in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire?
The first encounter is a Multi Battle on Southern Island, where she's after Latios and its Mega Stone. Mt. Pyre and the Team Magma Hideout follow, then the Delta Episode in Petalburg City and at the Mossdeep Space Center. The Weather Institute on Route 119 and the Seafloor Cavern, on the other hand, belong to the original Ruby. -
Which Pokémon does Courtney use?
Camerupt is her recurring Pokémon: she fields it in Ruby, in the remakes — where it appears as Mega Camerupt at the Mossdeep Space Center — and in the mobile game, where it can also Mega Evolve. Sources also credit her with a Numel and a Mightyena in Ruby, plus a Vulpix that evolved into Ninetales and a Swellow in the manga. -
What does Courtney do in Pokémon Generations?
Maxie leaves her behind instead of taking her to the Seafloor Cavern, so she can deal with Brendan. Alone, she has a vision of Primal Groudon attacking Maxie and Team Magma, before coming face to face with the intruder and his Sceptile. -
Does Courtney die in the manga?
Yes. A rockslide set off by Archie's Tentacruel crushes her after the battle between Groudon and Kyogre. She's later brought back to life, like Norman and Steven Stone, thanks to a Celebi that Ruby caught in Johto.
In short
Courtney is a rare case: the same character goes from inconsequential extra to an opponent you run into from one end of the story to the other, depending solely on which version you're holding. What the remakes and the mobile game eventually gave her is an explanation — a former scientist who can't stop analyzing whatever interests her — and it's the manga that goes the furthest, killing her off and then bringing her back.
