1447 words | Reading time: 7 minutes
Two men want to redraw the map of Hoenn, and Archie is the one voting for water. He founded Team Aqua, he leads it, and he's out to get his hands on Kyogre, the Pokémon that regional mythology credits with creating the oceans, in order to give aquatic species more room to live. Facing him, Maxie and his Team Magma champion the exact opposite agenda. One detail changes everything, though: depending on which version of the game you're holding, Archie is either a convenient ally or the man responsible for a regional disaster.

Expanding the Seas: Team Aqua's Agenda
Archie didn't inherit his position: he founded Team Aqua and leads it. His plan fits in one line — capture Kyogre, which the Hoenn region credits with creating the oceans, then use it to expand the territory of Water-type Pokémon.
The project has an exact mirror image. Maxie, leader of Team Magma, is described as his worst enemy, and the two organizations share the same ambition pointed in two opposite directions — with Archie pursuing his in a noticeably more laid-back style.
As for his profile, two names always come up: Sharpedo as his favorite Pokémon, Kyogre as his stated goal. An official description completes the picture: an outgoing nature and a strong personality, and it's precisely this temperament that earns him the trust of his crew.

An Ally in One Version, a Disaster in the Other
His role depends on the cartridge, and the gap is spectacular. In Pokémon Ruby and its remake Omega Ruby, he fights Team Magma alongside the player: no active role in the plot, and not a single battle against him.
In Sapphire, Emerald and Alpha Sapphire, the relationship flips. His ambition to expand the seas and oceans makes him a threat to Hoenn's natural balance. He opens hostilities with a raid on the Oceanic Museum, where he tries to snatch the Devon Parts from Captain Stern.
The next act plays out on Mt. Pyre, where he seizes the object capable of awakening the Legendary: the Red Orb in the original versions, the Blue Orb in the remake. He succeeds and puts the entire region in danger. Sapphire and Alpha Sapphire have you face him first at Mt. Chimney, then in the Seafloor Cavern; Emerald only has you battle him in the latter, at the precise moment he's trying to subdue the sea giant.
Rainbow Rocket, the Battle Maison and a Childhood Photo
The remakes slip in a biographical detail where nobody would think to look: in the Team Aqua Hideout, you come across a photograph of Archie as a child, posing with a Jirachi. No line of dialogue explains it, which makes the image all the more intriguing.
Alpha Sapphire even brings him over to your side: he can become the player's partner at the Battle Maison, where he always fields the same two Pokémon in both Multi and Super Multi Battles.
Like every criminal organization leader, he returns much later in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, this time enlisted in Team Rainbow Rocket and restored to his original look. A mobile game also added him in June 2021, in his remake outfit and paired with Kyogre.

On Screen, He Keeps the Name Archie and Captures Groudon
The French dub left his English name untouched: on French TV, he stays Archie rather than Arthur, while his rival likewise becomes Maxie instead of the French games' Max. He appears in only two episodes, "Gaining Groudon" and "The Scuffle of Legends."
The anime credits him with real leadership talent, and the proof is no small thing: his organization manages to capture Groudon. His downfall comes from elsewhere: the Red Orb ends up in his hands.
The object does its work. Archie gradually falls under its harmful influence and seems to slip into madness; once Kyogre is under his control, the rising waters become an obsession, to the point that he'd be willing to sink his own team along with everything else.
Pokémon Generations: The Awakening That Turns Against Him
The series of short films devotes an entire segment to him. We follow him into the Seafloor Cavern with his Grunts, on the hunt for the Legendary sea Pokémon, until the search pays off.
Shelly warns him of the danger; he ignores the warning and awakens the Legendary with the Blue Orb. The storm that follows makes him realize his mistake: he tries to regain control of the creature, gets attacked, and his fate is left hanging.
One detail runs through every version of the story: the object that gives him a hold over the Legendaries changes names from one medium to the next — Red Orb, then Blue Orb, which the French versions even split into Gemme Bleue and Orbe Bleu. The gesture itself never varies an inch.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Who is Archie in Pokémon?
The founder and leader of Team Aqua, in Hoenn. He wants to control Kyogre to expand the seas and give aquatic Pokémon more space, which puts him in direct opposition to Maxie and Team Magma. -
Is Archie an enemy in every game?
No. In Ruby and Omega Ruby, he fights Team Magma alongside the player and never challenges them. It's in Sapphire, Emerald and Alpha Sapphire that he becomes the threat, going as far as awakening Kyogre. -
Why is he called Archie in the French anime but Arthur in the French games?
Because the French version kept his English name there, as it did for his rival, called Maxie on screen rather than Max. Arthur remains the name used by the French video games. -
What is Archie's favorite Pokémon?
Sharpedo. Kyogre, on the other hand, isn't a Pokémon he owns at the start: it's the goal he pursues throughout the Hoenn storyline. -
Where does Archie reappear after the Hoenn adventure?
In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, as a lieutenant of Team Rainbow Rocket, with his original look. A mobile game also added him in June 2021, paired with Kyogre.
In short
Archie is that rare antagonist whose alignment depends on which box you buy: an awkward ally on one side, the trigger of a disaster on the other. Other media are less forgiving — the TV series has him sink into madness with the Red Orb, and the short films leave him facing a Kyogre that refuses to obey him. Nearly all his big moves succeed, and that's exactly what slips out of his grasp afterward.
