Ball Guy in Pokémon Sword and Shield

Ball Guy: The Mascot the Galar League Never Hired

1207 words | Reading time: 6 minutes

Nobody hired him, and everybody knows him. In Pokémon Sword and Shield, a figure in a Poké Ball costume hangs around Galar's Gyms, hands out Poké Balls to challengers and presents tournament prizes. The League never appointed him, yet it issued him an official card — and his face stays unknown from the first badge to the last.

A mascot the League never hired

The costume this character wears is modeled on the official mascot of the Galar championship. The person who puts it on, however, has received no mandate from the institution: they decided on their own to dress up, and settled into the landscape without any authorization whatsoever.

The game embraces the paradox rather than resolving it. This gate-crasher is adored across the region, especially by the youngest fans, and his presence is so widely accepted that you can always find him in the Gyms or right outside them, exactly where the Challenge plays out.

Galar issues League Cards to its challengers, its Gym Leaders and its Champion. Ball Guy holds one without belonging to any of those three categories, a case unique in the entire game: formal recognition granted to someone who officially holds no title.

A Poké Ball gifted at every newly visited Gym

The first encounter takes place at the Stadium in Motostoke, the town where Kabu runs the Gym, and where the player heads for the championship's opening ceremony. From then on, the character becomes a regular fixture of the journey rather than a one-off encounter.

The principle is mechanical: in every Gym they discover, the player receives a special Poké Ball the first time they talk to him. Only one Gym breaks the rule, the one in Spikemuth, which comes with no gift. The reward is tied to the place and the first conversation, never to a battle won.

The role outlives the crowning. Once the player becomes Champion, it's Ball Guy who hands out the prizes for League tournaments: the first tournament won on a given day always yields a Wishing Piece, while the following ones draw their prize at random from a list.

A character the game reveals nothing about

The mask never comes off. Neither the name, nor the age, nor even the gender of the person in the costume is established, and no dialogue gives away a usable clue. The only established fact concerns the initiative: the disguise was their own idea, not something they were ordered to wear.

A second gray area adds to the first. Where the Poké Balls he hands out come from remains unexplained: the game makes him an inexhaustible supplier, able to produce one at every new Gym, without ever saying where this stock comes from or who pays for it.

His special status shows even in the collectibles. His League Card exists in only one version, whereas those of other characters come in a common and a rare version. You pick it up in front of Motostoke Stadium, once you've won the title of Champion.

Beyond the Gym Challenge: mobile, screen and cards

The character has spilled beyond the confines of Sword and Shield. A mobile game, Pokémon Masters EX, added him in March 2023, with two distinct looks: his canonical outfit, the one from the Galar championship, and a Sygna Suit tailored for the stage.

In his usual outfit, his default partner is Amoonguss, whose appendages mimic fake Poké Balls, and he can be paired with a Voltorb once Friendship Level 100 is reached at the Trainer Lodge. His Sygna Suit pairs him with an Electrode in its Hisuian form, with which he sets off fireworks while pitching handmade Poké Balls.

On screen, his contribution lasts just a few seconds: he dances at the Stadium in Wyndon before kickoff of the match pitting Victor against Champion Leon, in the Pokémon Evolutions episode titled "The Champion". The card game had opened the door to him earlier, with a first appearance in the Shining Fates expansion, released in France in February 2021.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who's hiding under the Ball Guy costume?
Nobody knows. The game gives no name, age or gender: the only certainty is that this person decided on their own to wear the costume, without being invited to by the League.
  • How do you get the Poké Balls Ball Guy hands out?
By talking to him for the first time in each newly visited Gym. He then gives you a special Poké Ball. The Spikemuth Gym is the exception and offers no gift.
  • How do you get Ball Guy's League Card?
You need to have become Champion, then go talk to him in front of Motostoke Stadium. It's the only League Card in the game that doesn't come in two versions, a common one and a rare one.
  • Does Ball Guy appear anywhere besides Sword and Shield?
Yes. He joined a mobile game in March 2023 with two outfits and three possible partners, he dances at Wyndon Stadium in an episode of the animated series, and he has a card in the Shining Fates expansion.

In short

Ball Guy is an anomaly the Galar League ended up adopting: a stranger who gave himself a role, and whom the institution approved after the fact by handing him a card reserved for Trainers and Champions. His French name, Ball Masqué, likely echoes the song "Le Bal masqué" by La Compagnie Créole — a translator's wink for a character whose face will never be shown.
