1557 words | Reading time: 7 minutes
Lovrina runs Cipher's most dangerous lab, and behaves like a sulky teenager. She's one of the organization's five Admins in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness; she inherits the facility where the very first Shadow Pokémon were created, and she works there with her brother Naps. Her mission fits in one line: neutralize purification. Her personality fits in another: whatever goes wrong is always someone else's fault.

The Cipher Lab Changes Hands
Lovrina holds the position once held by Ein one generation of schemes earlier: the organization's entire scientific branch answers to her, starting with the lab where the first Shadow Pokémon were brought into the world. She founds nothing; she takes over a program that's already underway.
Greevil assigned her a goal of brutal precision: develop a protocol that makes a Shadow Pokémon permanently impossible to purify. The project's first subject bears a serial number rather than a name: XD001.
The ambition doesn't stop at this specimen. XD001 is only a prototype: once the method is reliable, Cipher intends to raise entire combat units from XD-series specimens. The lab isn't an experimental workshop; it's a production line waiting for its process.
The Kidnapping of Professor Krane
To complete her protocol, Lovrina needs knowledge she doesn't have: that of Professor Krane, the purification specialist. She sends Naps to fetch him, and her brother brings him back to the lab by force. Her method already says everything about her: what she can't obtain, she has someone take.
She then lays out her project for the scientist, convinced her creation will intrigue him and he'll want to know more. Krane flatly refuses, and his answer instantly triggers her signature reflex: it's all Naps's fault, for bringing the guest in the wrong way instead of politely.
The researcher becomes a prisoner, declared an indispensable part of the plan. Lovrina completely forgets about her base's security and only realizes it when she catches him about to slip away with Michael. The battle that follows costs her two things: the win, and the Data ROM detailing the organization's operations, dropped by a Grunt during the escape.
A Teenage Temperament Hungry for Attention
The game doesn't bother with nuance: Lovrina is the stereotypical girl who demands attention. Ambitious and self-centered in equal measure, she retreats into the role of victim as soon as a situation stops going her way.
This pattern spills over onto those closest to her. Her men and her brother bear the brunt of her tantrums, ordered to do one thing and then its opposite, so the Cipher Lab lives under a reign of terror with her as its only source.
Yet that terror has an exact mirror image. Lovrina dreads disappointing her master as much as her subordinates dread her: once beaten, she immediately explains she wasn't at her best that day and frets about Greevil's anger. The lab runs on fear, from the bottom all the way to the top.
A Team Chosen for Its Beauty
Therein lies the paradox of her role: at the head of a program meant to manufacture living weapons, she picks her own Pokémon for their beauty rather than their power. Fourteen are documented, including Gardevoir, Milotic, Altaria, Delcatty, Roselia, Gorebyss, Luvdisc, Beautifly, Misdreavus, Meganium, Blissey, Shuckle, Farfetch’d and Wobbuffet.
Her battle style matches that taste: she relies on lockdown and status attrition rather than raw power. You don't lose to her because of one devastating hit; you lose because you can't do anything anymore.
At the Orre Colosseum, her team isn't even fixed. Four Pokémon are drawn at random from her roster, which rules out preparing a memorized counter: every attempt reshuffles the deck.
✨ Gardevoir leads her lineup: see the Pokémon figures.
Where You Battle Her in Pokémon XD
The first confrontation takes place on her turf. Lovrina blocks the lab's exit and starts the battle the moment the boy turns down her request to plead her case to the researcher she's holding.
She then disappears from Michael's path until the finale, on Citadark Isle, where she stands guard in a corridor on the entrance level. At headquarters, she proudly announces that her XD001 is now beyond any purification — then admits she much prefers the boy with the Snag Machine to the Grand Master as an opponent. He beats her a second time.
What follows is almost a career change. Lovrina leaves Cipher to its fate and goes back to being a Trainer, at the Orre Colosseum, where she closes out the first round as the final opponent. Beaten once again by Michael, she crowns him "Member No. 1" of a fan club nobody had ever heard of.
In the Manga and Under Other Names
Lovrina steps outside the game once, for a promotional manga based on Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. She still serves Cipher there and remains Michael's adversary, with no rewrite of her role.
The adaptation even reuses her battle instead of inventing a new one. She sends out a Shadow Delcatty backed up by a Roselia, two of the four Pokémon she uses against the player in her lab.
Translations, for their part, kept none of her French name. She's Lovrina in English, Luzilla in German, Priscila in Spanish and Lorena in Italian: no foreign version keeps the French name, Angéline.

In short
Lovrina is a rare case of an Admin whose role and temperament constantly contradict each other: she holds the organization's most technical post and runs it on mood, between scolding her brother, making excuses after a defeat and boasting like a child prodigy. She believes she has succeeded where no one expected her to, since she proclaims XD001 impossible to purify — unaware that the Purify Chamber at the Pokémon HQ Lab will get the better of it. Cipher falls anyway, and she ends up handing out fan club cards to the boy who beat her three times.
