Virgil: Winning the Unova League with One Evolution Line

1222 words | Reading time: 6 minutes

An entire team drawn from a single species. Virgil is a Trainer from Unova whose rescue squad, Team Eevee, is made up exclusively of Eevee and its evolutions, even though his Pokémon list also includes a few entries from outside the line. He passes through the Unova saga for the length of one tournament, knocks out the Trainer who had just eliminated Ash, and leaves with the Vertress Conference trophy.

An Entire Team Drawn from Eevee's Evolution Line

Virgil's infobox names Eevee as his main Pokémon, and his team list confirms it: Eevee itself, plus seven of its evolutions — Umbreon, Espeon, Flareon, Vaporeon, Jolteon, Glaceon, Leafeon. Sylveon, the eighth branch, appears nowhere on the list.

Virgil's first Eevee is the one that became Umbreon, and it's the one he picks to face Flora's Gothitelle. At the other end of the list, the unevolved Eevee, a female, doesn't stay in her Poké Ball: she follows her Trainer everywhere, which makes her the visible mascot of the whole group.

The recorded moves show the line being used for exactly what it offers, namely type coverage achieved without ever switching species: Hydro Pump and Aurora Beam for Vaporeon, Blizzard and Ice Beam for Glaceon, Fire Blast for Flareon, Thunderbolt for Jolteon. Sand Attack shows up on three of them, like a shared training habit.

The infobox names it as his main Pokémon, and the whole team descends from it.

A Rescue Team Before a Tournament Team

The squad's name states its job before its track record: Team Eevee, a rescue squad. Virgil arrives in the series during the Unova saga, in season 16, the one that takes the heroes all the way to the League.

In fact, his very first scene shows him on a rescue rather than in a battle: it's his Espeon that shows up to get the group of heroes out of trouble. So the Trainer is introduced through his usefulness before his strength, which is rare in a gallery of one-off opponents.

The team list adds three entries from outside the line — a Klink, a Klang and two Klinklang — but their moves are unknown, and they're never seen in a match.

The Vertress Conference, Won from Start to Finish

His documented run starts with two clearly identified battles. His Vaporeon gets the better of Ultimo's Crustle, then his Umbreon is chosen to face Flora's Gothitelle and wins. Two different Eeveelutions, two rounds cleared, without the Trainer ever needing to step outside his line.

In the semifinal, his opponent is Cameron, who has just eliminated Ash from the tournament. Virgil only uses five Pokémon where six are allowed: Espeon goes in first, then Flareon takes on Cameron's Lucario and wins the exchange.

The final pits him against Dino, and it's the unevolved Eevee that wraps it up against a Druddigon, with a Trump Card fired off last. The trophy earns him the right to challenge the Elite Four and then the League Champion — a door the series mentions but never shows.

A Brother, a Mega Mewtwo and Three Voices

The infobox gives him a family in a single line: Davy, listed as his brother, also tied to Unova. The entry says nothing more about this connection, or about what this brother does in the story.

Virgil shows up once outside the tournament, in a special episode titled "Mewtwo — Prologue to Awakening", where he crosses paths with Mega Mewtwo Y. The timeline places this encounter before the events of the sixteenth movie, and therefore before his League run on screen.

Finally, the credits give him a voice in three languages: Yuki Kaji in Japanese, Tom Wayland in English and Antoni Lo Presti in French. A dedicated artwork accompanies his appearance, a sign that a one-tournament Trainer can still get his own official visual.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Which Pokémon does Virgil use?
In battle, only Eevee's evolution line: Eevee itself and seven of its evolutions, namely Umbreon, Espeon, Flareon, Vaporeon, Jolteon, Glaceon and Leafeon. A Klink, a Klang and two Klinklang are also used to power helicopters, but their moves are unknown and they're never seen in a match.
  • Did Virgil win the Unova League?

  • Did Virgil beat Ash?
No, the two never faced each other in the tournament. Ash had already been eliminated by Cameron, and it's Cameron that Virgil knocks out in the semifinal, using only five Pokémon.

  • Does Virgil appear again after the Vertress Conference?
He reappears in a special episode titled "Mewtwo — Prologue to Awakening", where he crosses paths with Mega Mewtwo Y. This episode takes place before the events of the sixteenth movie.

In short

Virgil comes down to one tournament and one idea: winning a League without ever leaving a single evolution line. Where most finalists field six unrelated species, he gets his type coverage by evolving the same Pokémon in seven directions, and keeps the eighth just as it is, by his side. It's the most complete demonstration of what Eevee can do that any one-off opponent has ever given the series.
