Timmy Grimm: The Coordinator Who Only Exists Behind a Mask

1183 words | Reading time: 5 minutes

Timmy Grimm only feels able to compete once his face is hidden. This boy from a well-off family in Verdanturf Town appears in two back-to-back episodes of the Advanced Generation series, almost always under another name: Phantom. The mask isn't a stage act aimed at the audience; it's a way of disobeying his mother without confronting her — and the costume was sewn for him by his father.

A Mother Who Hates Pokémon, a Son Who Brings One Home

The Grimm family is wealthy, and the boy's future is already mapped out: his mother has him lined up to run a business, not to chase Contests. Her opposition isn't only a matter of social ambition — the lady flat-out hates Pokémon, and forbids her son from battling with them.

The balance breaks the day Timmy comes across a Duskull that has lost its way. He brings it home, an ordinary thing for any child in the region to do, but a disastrous one in this particular household: his mother flies into a rage and orders him to put the wild Pokémon back outside.

It's his father, Tommy Grimm, who breaks the deadlock, and his solution says a lot about the couple. He makes his son a costume identical to the one he himself used to wear, back when he went off to battle behind his wife's back. So the trick isn't the boy's invention: it's handed down.

Phantom: What the Mask Changes in Him

Under the disguise, he's no longer the same boy. Masked, Timmy becomes self-assured and theatrical, two qualities that count double in a discipline where the performance is scored as much as the battle. Phantom quickly establishes himself as a good Coordinator.

What makes the character interesting is this reversal. Usually, a mask hides someone's identity from the public; here, the only spectator who needs fooling is the competitor's mother. The rest of the hall simply doesn't know who it's applauding, and that has no bearing on the plot.

The costume eventually shows its limits: Mrs. Grimm suspects her son of being the masked Coordinator. The whole machinery of Contests and their performances then ends up serving a family matter, where the real test plays out in the stands.

The Verdanturf Town Contest: Two Phantoms at Once

Ash's group decides to help Timmy enter anyway, and the workaround they come up with is purely visual: Brock puts on the costume in his place. The boy and Phantom thus appear at the same time right in front of his mother — two separate people, so no more room for suspicion.

On stage, the Contest goes well. Timmy puts on a good performance and knocks out Jessie, before falling in the final to May. The title slips away from him, but the point has been made in front of the only person who needed convincing.

The episode ends on the expected turnaround: his mother finally gives him her support. He's seen again later, very briefly, during the Hoenn Grand Festival — watching May compete on TV, as a spectator this time.

Duskull Turned Dusclops: A Single Partner

The Pokémon he picked up at the start didn't stay a Duskull: it appears as a Dusclops in all of his documented matches. It's one and the same individual, seen at two different stages, not two separate creatures on his team.

Its five known moves add up to a broad profile for a Ghost type: Shadow Punch and Will-O-Wisp for the type's signature flavor, but also Focus Punch, Psychic and Hyper Beam. Enough to surprise an unprepared opponent, and to produce the visual effects that Contests reward.

Its battle record fits in three lines: it beats the Roselia owned by Drew, its match against Ash's Pikachu is cut short with no winner declared, and May's Skitty beats it in the final. Two decisive battles out of three, and that's all the series gives it.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who is Phantom in the Hoenn Contests?
It's Timmy Grimm's masked identity. In this costume, the boy is far more confident and adopts theatrical manners, to the point of passing for a seasoned Coordinator.
  • Why does Timmy Grimm hide his identity to compete?
Because his mother hates Pokémon and sees him running a business rather than standing on a Contest stage. His father sewed him a costume, a copy of the one he used to wear to battle behind his wife's back.
  • Which Pokémon does Timmy Grimm use?
Just one: the Duskull he took in when it was lost, which evolved into Dusclops. Its known moves are Shadow Punch, Will-O-Wisp, Focus Punch, Psychic and Hyper Beam.
  • Does Timmy Grimm win the Verdanturf Town Contest?
No. He puts on a good performance, knocks out Jessie and beats Drew's Roselia, but he loses the final to May's Skitty. What he does win is his mother's support.

In short

Timmy Grimm only takes up two episodes, and his file fits into a handful of facts — but the idea behind him is clear: the costume doesn't fool the audience, it makes the Contest possible. The real opponent is sitting in the audience, the lost final changes nothing, and the only trophy that mattered was a mother's approval. A Coordinator whose victory is won off stage.
