Linnea: The Furisode Girl Who Guards Valerie's Gym

1279 words | Reading time: 6 minutes
Behind every Gym Leader, there's a whole staff. Linnea is one of Valerie's four apprentices in Laverre City, and it's in that capacity that she takes the field as a Gym Trainer. Players of Pokémon X and Y cross paths with her for a few seconds, just long enough for a Fairy-type battle. The anime, for its part, turns her into a front-desk and then a behind-the-scenes figure, one the French dub calls Asami.

Four apprentices, one Gym to run
Linnea lives in Laverre City, in Kalos, and is one of the four apprentices and assistants of the local Gym Leader. The title isn't honorary: it comes with a job, that of Gym Trainer.
The job comes with the house specialty. Linnea fields Fairy-type Pokémon, like the Gym Leader whose trade she is learning, and she stands on the path that leads to her.
The encounter doesn't amount to much. The protagonist beats her in passing, on the way up to Valerie, and comes away with two or three lines that say more about the Gym Leader than about the Gym itself.
The kimono, a gift that works like a knighting
The outfit Linnea wears didn't come from a store: Valerie gave it to her, as thanks for her work. That garment is what earns her the title of Furisode Girl.
The detail says something about how this Gym works. The Gym Leader designs her assistants' outfits herself, so the costume works as much as a token of recognition as it does as a uniform.
Linnea returns the favor. She tells the player she has worked hard to follow the same path, and admits she can't understand how Valerie manages to excel at both elegance and battling. Admiration is what drives the character, not set dressing.
Linnea on screen: the front desk, the fashion show, a whispered name
The anime gives her exactly the same job (only the French dub renames her Asami, her Japanese name): Valerie's assistant in Laverre City, in a kimono designed by the Gym Leader. She makes her entrance during the Kalos saga, behind the Gym's front desk.
That day the Gym is closed for a big event, and she's the one who has to break the news — first to Sawyer, who has come asking for a battle, then to Ash, who comes running in right behind him. She turns both Trainers away with an apology, while the rest of the staff rushes to finish the preparations.
What follows gives her a more decisive role than it seems. During the fashion show, it's Linnea who spots Sawyer in the audience and whispers his name to the Gym Leader as she looks for an opponent. The closing battle only happens because she was watching the crowd.

On the sidelines, a barometer of the battle
When Ash's group returns to the Gym for the official battle, the Furisode Girls act as hostesses: they welcome the visitors and show them the way to the battlefield. One of them, Kali, takes on the role of referee.
Linnea stays on the Gym Leader's side for the whole match. She cheers on her Sylveon, takes its fall against Ash's Fletchinder hard, then starts cheering again for Spritzee — the character serves as the match's emotional barometer, reaction after reaction.
The arrival of the opposing Hawlucha leaves her worried by strategies she didn't see coming, and Valerie's defeat saddens the whole group of assistants. They still attend the presentation of the Fairy Badge, then see the visitors off. Linnea returns later, in a flashback.
🎀 The Pokémon she cheers on from the sidelines has its own section: see Sylveon.
From generic Trainer class to playable character
The mobile game eventually recruited her. Linnea arrived there on January 1, 2026, in the outfit she wears in Pokémon X and Y, and as a sync pair with Aromatisse.
Her profile there spells out what the main games only hinted at: a bright, cheerful nature and a temperament quick to spring into action. Her lines all revolve around the same person, torn between pride in following in Valerie's footsteps and fear of letting her down.
The addition carries a small statistical footnote. Among the playable Trainers built on a generic Trainer class from the main series, Linnea is the fourth to be based on a character who already existed in a main series game, after Kali, Katherine and Blossom.

One of Valerie's four apprentices and assistants. She works as a Gym Trainer at the Laverre Gym, where she defends the Fairy type on the path that leads to the Gym Leader. -
Why is Linnea called Asami in the French anime?
The French dub of the anime gives her a different name, Asami (her Japanese name), but the role doesn't change: Valerie's assistant, Furisode Girl, at the Gym's front desk and then at the Gym Leader's side during her fashion show and her battle. -
What does "Furisode Girl" mean?

Which Pokémon is associated with Linnea?
Aromatisse, already in Pokémon X and Y, where she sends out a level 40 Aromatisse for her one and only battle — and again Aromatisse since she joined the mobile game on January 1, 2026. -
Where is the Gym where Linnea works?
In Laverre City, in the Kalos region. It's Valerie's Gym, the one that awards the Fairy Badge to victorious Trainers.
In short
Linnea amounts to a few lines of dialogue and two animated appearances, but she documents something the series rarely shows: a Gym's staff. Where most Gym Leaders work alone, Valerie trains, dresses and delegates — from the battle her apprentice fights against the player to the name she whispers in her ear during a fashion show. Linnea is the visible trace of how that Gym works.
