Katherine: The Furisode Girl Guarding Valerie's Gym

1117 words | Reading time: 5 minutes

You beat her in fifteen seconds and forget her right away. Yet Katherine holds a very specific place in the Laverre City Gym: she is one of the four apprentices of the Kalos Gym Leader, a Fairy-type specialist just like her, and one of the few Generation VI background characters to later land a playable role.

Four Apprentices Behind a Gym Leader

The Laverre City Gym doesn't rest on its Leader alone. Valerie trains and employs four apprentices, and Katherine is one of them: a Kalos native living in the city, she serves there as an assistant as much as a Gym Trainer.

These four carry a title rather than a rank: Furisode Girl. Their outfit comes from the Gym Leader herself, given as a token of recognition — a garment that signals belonging to the house far more than it serves as a uniform.

The esteem runs the same way for all of them. Like her three colleagues, Katherine openly admires her mentor and works to earn the trust placed in her, which explains her specialty: the Fairy type, the Gym's trademark.

A Hallway Obstacle, but Not a Mere Extra

In Pokémon X and Y, the encounter is over in a few seconds: the protagonist runs into Katherine inside the Gym, defeats her, and moves on toward the Gym Leader. The game gives her no cutscene and no story arc, just a battle along the way.

That status still serves a gameplay purpose. A Gym Trainer is a test run before the real match, and she plays that role to the end: she points the challenger to the resistances of Fairy-type Pokémon, exactly the information that will decide how the rest of the run goes.

Her team, for its part, is documented from the core games onward. In X and Y, Katherine fields just one Pokémon, a level 40 Slurpuff — with the Ability Sweet Veil and the moves Energy Ball, Draining Kiss, Aromatherapy and Endeavor.

Karen: Her Name in the French Dub

The anime keeps her role and, in English, her name; only the French dub changes the label, calling her Karen on screen. The job stays the same — Valerie's assistant at the Laverre City Gym, a Furisode Girl in an outfit designed by the Gym Leader.

Her first appearance, in the Kalos series, shows her as a talent scout. With her colleague Blossom, she watches Serena and Bonnie in the designer's boutique, decides they're up to the task, then leads them to her. Two models had just pulled out of the fashion show: the visitors take their place.

The next episode places her at the edge of the field, on the Gym Leader's side, during Ash's battle against Valerie. She cheers on her mentor's Sylveon and then Spritzee, grows alarmed at the opposing Hawlucha's tactics, takes the loss and watches the Fairy Badge being handed over. She's seen again later in a flashback, near the end of the series.

From Generic Class to Playable Trainer

The mobile game Pokémon Masters EX added her on January 1, 2024, in her outfit from X and Y. There she battles alongside Slurpuff, the only species the sources explicitly attribute to her, and her profile stresses how proud she is of her specialty.

Her arrival amounts to a promotion. Among the playable Trainers this game draws from the main series' generic classes, Katherine is the second to be modeled on a character who already existed in a main-series game, after Kali.

Her name, for its part, changes at every border: Joséphine in French, Katherine in English, Karena in German, Chloë in Spanish, Kelly in Italian. The German form is the only one that stays close to Karen, the name the French dub gives her.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who is Katherine in Pokémon?
A Gym Trainer at the Laverre City Gym, in Kalos. She is one of the four apprentices of Valerie, the local Gym Leader, and like the others she holds the title of Furisode Girl.
  • Where do you meet Katherine in the games?
Inside the Laverre City Gym, in Pokémon X and Y. The protagonist battles her briefly on the way to the Gym Leader.
  • Which Pokémon does Katherine use?
Just one, and the same everywhere: Slurpuff. In X and Y, she sends out a level 40 Slurpuff, and that same species has been her sync pair partner in the mobile game since January 2024.
  • Does Katherine appear in the anime?
Yes, under the same name in English, though the French dub calls her Karen. She recruits Serena and Bonnie for Valerie's fashion show, then follows the Gym battle between the Gym Leader and Ash from the sidelines.
  • Why does she wear a kimono?
Because Valerie gave it to her as a token of recognition. The outfit sets apart the Gym's four assistants, which is why they're known as Furisode Girls.

In short

Katherine belongs to that group of characters the games treat as scenery and the rest of the franchise eventually catches up with: three lines of dialogue in a Gym, a borrowed name in the anime's French dub, then a fully playable role in the mobile game. Her interest lies in what she sheds light on — the way a Gym is organized around its Leader, apprentices, kimonos and specialty included.
