Rydel in the Pokémon Adventures manga

Rydel: The Hoenn Bike Seller Who Gives His Stock Away

984 words | Reading time: 4 minutes

A shopkeeper who sells nothing. Rydel runs the bike shop in Mauville City, in Hoenn, and his store works backwards: the player walks out with the merchandise without paying a thing. It isn't a shop, it's a distribution point — and the only place in the region where you can change your mind as many times as you like.

A Shop in Mauville City's Northeasternmost House

Rydel is the go-to bike seller in Hoenn. His shop isn't in a public building: it's set up in the northeasternmost house in Mauville City, the city where Wattson runs his Gym.

The meeting starts with an inspection. Rydel looks over the customer's Running Shoes, finds them in sorry shape, and asks whether they've come a long way. The walk from Littleroot Town, home of Professor Birch, settles it: he gives away a bike, free of charge.

The gift is far from automatic, though. Answer that you haven't come far and he concludes the player has no need for his bikes, and the conversation ends there. It's admitting the distance traveled that triggers his generosity, not the visit itself.

Mach Bike or Acro Bike: A Choice That Commits You to Nothing

Rydel doesn't offer one bike but two, and he contrasts them point by point. The Mach Bike is built for speed and for those who love feeling the wind rush by; the Acro Bike is slower, but boasts technical capabilities the other lacks.

The player decides on the spot, but the decision isn't final: they can come back to Mauville City at any time to swap their model for the other one, as many times as they like and at no cost. Rydel treats every swap as routine service, never as a favor.

Only one situation blocks the exchange. A bike stored in the PC can't be swapped until it's taken back out: Rydel points this out himself to a player who shows up empty-handed, and sends them back to their storage before reopening the trade.

The Shopkeeper Who Lives on Advertising, Not Sales

His profile describes him as a seller and owner of a bike shop, yet nothing can be bought from him. He gives, he swaps, he takes back: next to an ordinary shopkeeper like Choy, who runs the shop in Jubilife Village, Rydel is a merchant without transactions.

The story pays him back another way, but only in the remakes. In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, after the player has promoted both models across Hoenn, Rydel sees his shop fill up with customers who came on that recommendation, and thanks his ambassador with a second bike: both models then end up in the same Bag.

Wind blows through almost all his lines, a selling point when you choose and then a farewell wish when you leave. His original name keeps a trace of it — Kazeno in Japanese, written 風野 in Chinese, where the first character is the one for wind, while English calls him Rydel and Italian Clelio.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Where do you find Rydel to get a bike?
In his shop in Mauville City, set up in the northeasternmost house in town. He hands the bike over for free to a player who arrived on foot from Littleroot Town.
  • Mach Bike or Acro Bike: which one should you choose?
The Mach Bike focuses on speed, the Acro Bike on technical capabilities at the cost of a slower pace. The choice is never final, since Rydel swaps the two models as often as you like.
  • Can you own both bikes at the same time?
Yes, in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. After the player has promoted both models across Hoenn, Rydel notices the rush of customers and gives them a second bike as thanks.
  • Why won't Rydel swap my bike?
Because it's stored in the PC. Rydel then asks you to take it out before making the trade, since the exchange is done item for item.
  • Does Rydel have any Pokémon?
None is attributed to him. He's neither a Trainer nor an opponent: his role is entirely limited to handing out and maintaining the region's bikes.

In short

Rydel has no team, no battle and no badge to hand out: his whole role comes down to an item and a matter of taste. Speed or technique, the player decides, and the answer never locks them in, since the door in Mauville City stays open. It's not much on paper, but this merchant is the one who decides how you'll cross Hoenn for the rest of the adventure.
