Robert in his first anime appearance

Robert: The Top Coordinator Who Beats Drew Every Time

1013 words | Reading time: 5 minutes

Robert wins every time he crosses paths with Drew. Yet this Top Coordinator appears in only a handful of episodes, with two Pokémon to his name and a single star, Milotic. With it he takes the Slateport Ribbon, then the Hoenn Grand Festival — two titles won from the same opponent.

A Johto Coordinator on the Hoenn Contest circuit

His profile carries a contradiction it never explains: it presents him as a Hoenn Coordinator, yet gives the Whirl Islands, in the Johto region, as his hometown. The two fit together if you read "from Hoenn" as a place of competition rather than a place of birth, since every Contest he's known to have entered takes place there.

The rest of his identity fits in a single line. His profession is Top Coordinator, and he has no known second job or family: he enters the series in the episode "Win, Lose or Drew!" and returns on and off across seasons 6 to 8.

Only two Pokémon are credited to him, and just one gets the spotlight: Milotic is his stated favorite, Claydol rounds out the duo. Nothing else appears under his name, which makes him one of the leanest-rostered Coordinators of the whole Hoenn saga.

Slateport: a Ribbon taken from Drew

His first documented competition is the Slateport Pokémon Contest. He opens it with Safeguard, and the judges are left in awe — so his opening doesn't rely on a show of power, but on the way the move is presented.

Then comes the battle against Drew, and Milotic never leaves the field. Iron Tail becomes its main weapon, while the Magical Leaf from the opposing Roselia is pushed back by Twister.

Robert wins the Contest and the city's Ribbon. The match table frames the scene precisely: one-on-one, his Milotic against Drew's Roselia, with the win going to the former.

Two Pokémon, four moves on record

Milotic's repertoire comes down to three moves that have nothing in common: Safeguard, Iron Tail and Twister. Three different types — Normal, Steel, Dragon — for a single partner, enough to cover both the performance and the battle without ever switching Pokémon.

Claydol, for its part, has only one confirmed move: Hyper Beam. The imbalance shows how the roles are split: Milotic carries the Contests, and Claydol only steps in when the format calls for it. Four moves for two Pokémon is a remarkably thin file for a Grand Festival winner.

Two battles against Drew, two wins

The match table lists only two battles, and both of them pit Robert against Drew. The first is the Slateport single battle; the second, later on, is a Double Battle in which Claydol and Milotic take the field together.

On the other side, Drew sends out Masquerain and Flygon. Robert wins once again, and both of his appearances in that table come in episodes centered on May: "Win, Lose or Drew!" and then "Rhapsody in Drew" — although in English, it's Drew's name that both titles carry.

That leaves the title that justifies his profession, the Hoenn Grand Festival, won against the same opponent. Not a single loss appears on his record: Robert isn't just one more rival on Drew's path, he's its ceiling.

In short

Robert has neither a story arc nor a big roster: two partners, four moves, two battles and zero losses. It's not much, and that's exactly what makes him easy to read — he exists to give Drew's journey a sense of scale, showing him the level he hasn't reached yet. His Milotic, for its part, is in every one of his battles and both of his wins: of all those Hoenn Contests, it's often the Pokémon people remember before the Trainer.
