Peonia: Peony's daughter who ran away to the Max Lair
Share
1616 words | Reading time: 8 minutes
Her first move in the game is to recruit the player against her own father. Peonia is the daughter of Peony, a former Gym Leader turned League Champion, and the niece of the Macro Cosmos chairman. On a family vacation in the Crown Tundra, she has only one thing in mind: setting up camp at the Max Lair and staying there. This teenage whim makes her, almost by accident, one of the most useful characters in the entire expansion.

Daughter of a Former Champion, Niece of a CEO
Peonia comes from Galar and carries a heavy name. Her father Peony was a Gym Leader, then League Champion, and her uncle is none other than Rose, the chairman of Macro Cosmos.
Her relationship with Peony hasn't always been strained. As a child, she was very close to him, and he loved looking after her and keeping her entertained; it was as she grew up that she tired of his ways and pulled away.
Now a young teenager, she finds an ever-present, overprotective father harder and harder to put up with, and wants her own independence. She has also become a Trainer, with a clear taste for Dynamax raids and huge, giant opponents.
The Argument at Crown Tundra Station
It all plays out in The Crown Tundra expansion, where father and daughter are on vacation in the Crown Tundra. What she wants to see is the Max Lair and its Dynamax Adventures.
Peony, of course, invites himself along, and the argument breaks out outside Crown Tundra Station. She insists she can get there on her own, without a chaperone; he retorts that he knows a far more interesting place, made for adventurers.
Since the discussion is going in circles and her father keeps treating her like a little girl, she changes tactics. She calls out to the player, who has only just arrived in the Crown Tundra, and asks for a hand: while the player battles Peony, she slips off to the Max Lair.
Deep in the Lair, a Deal Is Struck
Once there, she immediately sets off on a Dynamax Adventure. Peony then asks the player to do the same and reach the bottom of the Max Lair, and that's where the two meet up again.
The welcome is warm: she reckons they have the same tastes, finally introduces herself by name, apologizes for using the player against her father, and is stunned to learn that Peony lost the battle.
Then comes the real reason she ran off. Her father has built an entire vacation itinerary around local legends, but going on a trip with her parents is embarrassing at her age — she'd rather take on Dynamax Pokémon. Her proposal is simple: the player takes her place on her father's adventures, which the player accepts before going to tell Peony in person.
A Guide Paid in Dynite Ore
Once Peony's adventures are under way, Peonia sets up shop at the entrance to the Max Lair. She tells the player about certain Legendary Pokémon lurking deep in the lair and gladly joins them on a few Dynamax Adventures.
The service comes at a price. She reveals a Pokémon's location in exchange for five pieces of Dynite Ore, lets you keep no more than three saved locations at a time, warns you when the species on offer has already been caught, and still gives the information away the first time if the player is short on ore.
On Dynamax Adventures, she doesn't use her own Pokémon: she battles with one of the rental Pokémon. Her advice, on the other hand, applies to everyone: cut down damage with Reflect or Light Screen, watch how the Pokémon at the bottom reacts to different types, or raise your allies' Attack with a Max Move like Max Knuckle.

Freezington and the Golden Outfit
After a while, she decides to come to the lodge Peony has rented in Freezington. She finds her father and the player there, likes the house and thanks the player for keeping her old man company.
She explains that she's done so many Dynamax Adventures she's had her fill, and now wants to try part of the organized tour — without knowing that the two have already finished all of it. The silence that follows throws her, and a panicked Peony immediately promises to dig up a new legend just for her.
The peace offering finishes it off: a golden expedition outfit, dazzlingly shiny, and she can't see what makes it any better than normal clothes. When her father replies that it's so everyone can see how amazing she is, embarrassment wins out: she palms the outfit off on the player and heads back to the Max Lair, where father and daughter eventually end up side by side at the entrance, without her role changing one bit.
Tyrantrum, Rumors and Two Accessories
Only one Pokémon is attributed to her, a Tyrantrum that she talks about with obvious tenderness. Her current plan is to use an Ability Patch on it, so it stops hurting itself when it uses Head Smash, its favorite move.
Stationed at the entrance, she also passes along the rumors going around the place. The site's scientist told her that the first Legendary discovered in the lair was Solgaleo in Sword and Lunala in Shield, and that she used to work at a research lab in Alola; Peonia, for her part, wonders why so many Legendaries are gathered there and suspects that a gigantic Wishing Star lies beneath the lair.
The rest of her chatter is worth a listen: the giant tree known as the Dyna Tree supposedly rewards whoever shakes it, and a woman with very long hair is said to wander the Crown Tundra's cemetery at night. With all this chatting, she ends up giving the player a pair of Futuristic Shades and a Futuristic Monocle — the frames worn by Lysandre in Pokémon X and Y and the monocle worn by Ghetsis — available in several colors.

In short
The character rests on a single tension, sustained from start to finish: a teenager who wants to break away from a father who can't let her go. The game never really resolves it — it simply sets her up at the entrance to a lair, where she sells Legendary locations and hands out the accessories she picks up. It's this stubborn refusal of her father's plans that makes her an unmissable stop in the Crown Tundra.
