Ortega: The Ruchbah Squad Boss Who Built the Starmobiles

1523 words | Reading time: 7 minutes

The only Team Star boss who is also its engineer. Ortega commands the Ruchbah Squad, the branch devoted to the Fairy type, and displays an arrogance that discourages any sympathy from the outset. Behind the pink getup and the golden scepter, though, the character's profile describes a student bullied over his parents' fortune — and the builder of the five vehicles that serve as the emblem of the entire organization.

One boss out of five, at the head of the Ruchbah Squad

Team Star isn't run from a single chair: it's split into squads, each with its own boss. Ortega is one of the five, and his squad is called the Ruchbah Squad — which the game also refers to, more simply, as the organization's Fairy crew. The other branches belong to his fellow bosses, including Eri.

The specialty isn't just for show. Ortega sticks to Fairy-type Pokémon, a choice that clashes with the street-gang imagery displayed by the rest of the organization: where the setting promises bruisers, he sends out pastel creatures. It's the character's first contradiction, and he owns it right down to his wardrobe.

Nor is he anything like a professional gang leader: his mobile-game profile points out that he's still enrolled at the academy in Paldea. His days as a boss run in parallel with his schooling, in the very school where his troubles began — Scarlet and Violet makes the school the backdrop of this whole story.

All five Starmobiles came out of his workshop

Team Star fields five Starmobiles. None of them came from an outside workshop: Ortega built all five himself, without any help. His profile stresses this point, which gives the heir the only skill in his life that his parents' money didn't buy him.

Nor is a Starmobile a car that fell from the sky. They're modified Pokémon-powered vehicles, in other words Pokémon mounts repurposed from their original use for the gang. So the job is as much about mechanics as about knowing the Pokémon themselves.

This engineer role carries a lot of weight in the character's makeup. Ortega constantly doubts his own abilities, even though he's the only Team Star member capable of building the equipment that makes the group recognizable to everyone. The know-how is there; the confidence that should go with it, much less so.

Pastel pink, white fur and a golden scepter

Everything about him is tuned to the same palette. Short hair and pale pink eyes, a pink coat trimmed with white fur, matching pants: the only break comes from a light blue shirt. The look is finished off with a jewel-studded belt and a golden scepter, two accessories that have no business in a gang of high schoolers.

One detail changes from one version to the other: his bow tie is purple or red depending on the cartridge, a cosmetic variation that sets apart the two halves of Scarlet and Violet. The rest of the outfit doesn't change one bit, so much so that the mobile game reused it as is when he was added.

This look doesn't come out of nowhere. His parents run a branch of a clothing company in Paldea, and the family fortune explains both the cut of the coat and the stones on the belt. Above all, it explains the rest of the story: that money is what made him a target.

Arrogance on display, unease behind the scenes

At the academy, his wealth made him a target, and that bullying is what pushed him toward Team Star. So joining wasn't a conquest or a rich kid's whim: it was the way out he found when school became unbearable.

The behavior he shows afterward is the exact opposite of a cry for help. Ortega is haughty with just about everyone, his own Team Star partners included, and this constant condescension is the first thing the player gets from him.

His profile spells out the mechanism bluntly: the haughtiness covers a deep unease. The same boy cares enormously about his friends and constantly questions his own skills — two traits none of his lines give away, and which make the character so interesting once the veneer cracks.

Beyond the games: a sync pair with Dachsbun, cards, and a name that changes

The mobile game welcomed him on March 20, 2025, in the exact outfit he wears in the main games. There he forms a sync pair with a Dachsbun, already on his teams in Scarlet and Violet; at the Ruchbah Squad's Base, it backs up Azumarill, Wigglytuff and the squad's Revavroom, and it's still there for the rematch, alongside Klefki, Azumarill, Wigglytuff and Hatterene.

The card game had featured him nearly two years earlier. Ortega debuted there with the Scarlet & Violet—Obsidian Flames expansion, released in France on August 11, 2023, and he has appeared on other cards since. So a Team Star boss got his card before getting his sync pair.

His name, meanwhile, doesn't cross a single border intact. He becomes Ortega in English, Otis in German, Gus in Spanish and Ortiz in Italian. The Japanese original reads Orutiga: so it's the French version, Ortiga, that stays by far the closest.

In short

Ortega comes down to a single contrast: the one who talks the loudest is also the one who doubts the most. The pink coat, the golden scepter and the condescension form a flawlessly kept-up front; behind it are a student targeted over his family's money and an engineer who doesn't think he measures up, even though he single-handedly built the five machines that define his organization's image. He's the only Team Star boss whose workshop counts as much as his team.
