Colza: The Agriculture Corps Captain Who Crossed the Sea

1094 words | Reading time: 5 minutes

He crossed the sea to get a plot of land all his own. Colza leads the Agriculture Corps, one of the Galaxy Team's divisions based in Jubilife Village in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. His job fits in one sentence: produce enough to feed and heal a colony set down in the middle of hostile territory. The game turns this into a paid service, a waiting period and a harvest that's never guaranteed.

An Entire Corps Devoted to Farming

Colza is neither a Trainer nor a researcher: he's a farmer placed at the head of a corps. The Agriculture Corps is a division of the Galaxy Team, alongside the Construction Corps led by Sanqua and the Medical Corps led by Pesselle.

He comes from elsewhere, and he says so himself: if he crossed the sea to settle in Jubilife Village, it was to finally have land of his own. He immediately adds the condition that comes with it — a plot is no use if he can't work it safely.

That caveat sums up his situation better than any long speech. The colony stands on territory it doesn't control, and farming there is as much a risk as a trade. Colza never addresses the threat head-on: he translates it into a farming problem.

The Farm: Six Programs and Their Prices

The service takes place at the farm, where the player picks a crop program. Six options are on offer: Apricorns, medicinal plants, vegetables, mushrooms, Berries and Nature mints. You pay up front, head off, and come back once the crop has had time to grow.

The price list climbs with no surprises: five hundred coins for Apricorns, a thousand for medicinal plants, fifteen hundred for vegetables, two thousand for mushrooms, three thousand for Berries. Nature mints alone cost ten thousand coins, or twenty times the first tier. Only the special Berry harvest costs more: twenty thousand coins.

The yield, on the other hand, isn't fixed. Depending on the round, Colza reports a bumper crop, a result that meets expectations, or a disappointing harvest that he promises to make up for next time. So the farm works like a bet, not a vending machine: the price is known in advance, the quantity isn't.

What His Lines Say About the Job

His original motivation is openly mundane: gathering Berries out in the wild wears him out, so he'd rather grow them on site. It's the reasoning of a professional who wants, above all, to make his supply predictable.

He's also curious about what he grows. Discovering that Pokémon have flavor preferences surprises him, then amuses him — he concludes that it's probably true of all living things. The remark treats Pokémon as dinner guests rather than opponents, which is still rare in the game.

On the fundamentals, he holds a consistent line: working the land means bowing to nature's whims, with no power over it whatsoever. He admits, though, that the situation, bad as it is, has something a little exciting about it.

A Resemblance to Gardenia, and Nothing More

The physical likeness between Colza and Gardenia, the Eterna City Gym Leader, is striking and fuels plenty of comparisons. No relationship between the two characters has ever been officially confirmed: a resemblance is just a resemblance.

His names in the other versions of the game stay in the plant world too: Colza in English, Naban in German, Napa in Spanish, Napo in Italian. Each version names him after a plant, the most economical way to state his job before he even opens his mouth.

In short

Colza has no team and no battles to his name, and that's precisely what makes him interesting: he fills the logistics slot in a game built on catching and battling. The farm turns a gathering chore into a paid service, with its waiting time and its element of chance, and the man in charge accepts that the harvest doesn't depend on him. A corps captain whose only opponent is the weather.
